Unwind with God
()
About this ebook
Unwind with God is an evening devotional to help readers maximise their quiet time with God. It has a journal and a prayer at the end of the devotion. It is a practical devotion that deal with everyday life issues. Research shows not all of us are morning people. Some people get jarred out of sleep, mutter a quick good morning to the Lord and dash for the shower. We may love to sit at His feet but the long commute to work beckons. We trod back home with our mind full of deadlines and work problems. We may also have family responsibilities waiting when we get home. Unwind with God is a tool to help maximise some quality time with the Lord in our down time when it is quiet and there is no rush. The devotional covers topics like attitude, obedience, courage, and walking in love.

Day 1
DILIGENCE
2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble;
We fulfil our destiny one day at a time. Diligence is not an array of activity. It is effectiveness. Some people run around all day and still do not have much to show for it at the end of the day. Diligent people usually have a vision, a plan and a timeline for the desired goal. Bill Hybels, author of Making Life Work said Dignity does not float down from heaven it cannot be purchased nor manufactured. It is a reward reserved for those who labour with diligence
Persistent diligence is an essential character trait to help us fulfil the call of God on our lives. We have to be good stewards over our gifts and work with God to develop them. Diligence glorifies God and gives us a life we can be proud to look back on because we did not squander our opportunities.
Prayer
Lord, help me to be diligent in every area of my life. Give me the wisdom to use my time more efficiently, in Jesus Name. Amen
Journal
What area of my life can I be more diligent (e.g. spiritual, professional, or personal fitness)?
Write down an action plan on what I want to achieve and by when?
Day 2
COMPETE WITH YOURSELF
2 Corinthians 10:12 For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
Let us resist the temptation to compare ourselves with someone else. It is a guaranteed way to get discouraged. Someone will always be smarter, prettier or richer. Saul self-destructed by feeling threatened by David. Comparison leads to envy which becomes a fertile ground for competition. We all have different abilities. The key is to identify them and embrace them. Emulate positive attributes in others but keep it in perspective. God did not make clones. He made creations with a blend of gifts built in with a unique personality to work in partnership with Him. Moses was called to be a deliverer. David was called to be a king. They both needed a different temperament and skillset. David started using his gifts in the field and eventually ended up as king of Israel but he would not have reached his destiny if he was busy competing with others.
Prayer
Father in the name of Jesus, help me to identify and value my gifts and talents. Teach me how to perfect my gifts so I can serve others effectively. Amen
Journal
What am I especially good at doing?
How can I use my gift to help someone else?
Day 3
AVOID WORKAHOLIC BEHAVIOUR
Psalm 127:2 [AMP] It is vain for you to rise up early, to take rest late, to eat the bread of anxious toil- for He gives [blessings] to his beloved in sleep.
God wants us to be diligent and work hard. There is a fine line between hard work and been a workaholic. A habit of working frantically after midnight when the motive is fear driven is vain. Lying in bed strategizing late into the night may prevents us from waking up on time to spend quality time with God in the morning. Switch off. It demonstrates a lack of trust in God as our provider. Cursed is the man who places his trust in the arm of flesh. God can do for us in an instant what a night of lost sleep cannot produce. Anxious toil is a sneaky form of pride. It means we have taken our eyes off God and have put on a cloak of independence. Put God first. He will give us the wisdom to be productive without borrowing from the next day.
Prayer
Forgive me for leaning on my own understanding and for my self reliant attitude. Teach me the difference between what is important and what is urgent in Jesus name.
Journal
Have I been anxious about lately?
Have I involved God in it or have I been handling the situation myself?
Day 4
LET GO OF UNFRUITFUL RELATIONSHIPS
2 Corinthians 6: 14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
Sometime we think of unequally yoked as a Christian dating or married to an unsaved person. Are we influencing people positively, are our relationships mutually edifying or is it just malevolently infectious? Sometimes we may have the cool friend but that friendship is full of compromise and it makes us lukewarm towards God. There is power in association. Look at the fruit of someone’s life before calling them a close friend. In the Bible, we can see how Jonadab planted the seed in Amnon mind on how to rape her half sister Tamar. We may think that is a bit drastic but for Amnon to have taken the word to heart and acted on it they must have developed a relationship over time. Amnon was the one thinking lustful thoughts but a good friend could have turned that situation around positively. A bad advice from a friend caused devastation in David’s household.
Prayer
God remove the negative influences in my life. Thank you for the strength to shake off compromising relationships and a discerning heart for godly ones. Amen
Journal
Are there any unequally yoked relationships that are pulling me away from God?
Make a list of my close relationship and decide which ones are equally and unequally yoked.
