It was the year 1592 in a small town in the Redwood Forest called Redwood Hills. Redwood Hills was a creative town where they made things out of wood, like porches, tree houses and furniture. They even used wood to start fires for their communities and for their fire places to keep warm.
Not a lot of things happened in Redwood Hills. It was always a nice, peaceful town, except for one thing. There were some strange goings-on in the deep dark part of the Redwood Forest where the loggers worked. They said that an old lady guarded the pathway to a redwood tree that had been there for centuries. It was a very old, creepy looking tree that was said to have magical powers. If you asked for a wish, it would be granted. However, the Spirit of the tree would ask for a favor in return. You know what they say: ‘be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.’
One of the men working in the Redwood Forest was named John. A couple of the friends working with him were named Jeremy, Chris and Tony. One sunny afternoon when they were cutting down redwood trees, the lunch horn blew. In the middle of eating lunch, they started talking about the old magical tree.
After a hard day’s work, John and his friends went back to his place for a barbecue and alcohol and got drunk. John’s wife, Sara, did most of the cooking. That night while John, Jeremy, Chris and Tony were sitting at the dinner table getting drunk, Jeremy remembered seeing Sara coming down the pathway where that creepy old tree was standing. He had forgotten to tell John. Before he told John, Jeremy walked to the kitchen to ask Sara why she was out there that day. Right before he walked into the kitchen, he stopped in the doorway. He saw her putting a weird substance that looked like poison in John’s beer.
Jeremy told John not to drink the next beer Sara gave him, but John was so drunk, he wouldn’t even pay attention. So when Sara gave John another beer, Jeremy had to knock it out of John’s hand.
John yelled What are you doing?
as the beer hit the floor and the glass shattered all over. Jeremy looked over at Sara, who had a surprised look on her face. Then John mumbled, Let’s go out to this tree that everyone keeps talking about.
So John and his friends were on their way to the creepy old tree that was down the pathway in the middle of the Redwood Forest. Right when they reached the entrance to the pathway, they saw an old lady who looked like she was about to fall over and die. She stood right in front of them and chanted don’t go forward, so long as you value your life. Beware of the Spirit that lives in the tree. It will take your life, so let it be.
John and his friends pushed her out of the way and started down the path. It led to a huge clearing, and there it stood! The biggest, oldest creepiest looking tree they had ever seen. John’s three friends got the creepiest chill that went down their spines and took off, leaving John there all alone.
After five minutes, John blurted out Spirit, I wish to live forever.
He was asking this, but thinking
