    A t fifteen minutes to five in the morning, Mr Boateng was sitting on his bed, contemplating how to solve some of his numerous problems. His landlord had been bothering him about his light and water bills being in arrears; Aunty Koko (who was also his maize seller) had sent persistent warnings to have the debts he owed her settled or else there would be no more credit sales of maize to him; and his friend Frank Oteng had just the previous day humiliated him in public for not settling an amount he owed him. Above all, his children were about to go to school. Finding the money to pay their school fees was also problematic.

    Mr Paul Boateng was in his late fifties. He was married to Mrs Comfort Boateng, who was forty-three years old. The Lord had blessed their marriage of twenty-three years with two children, Emily and Godfred Boateng. Emily, the elder child, was twenty, and Godfred was seventeen. Mr Boateng was a worker in Kumasi at an agrofirm that dealt with agricultural inputs and products. Because of some financial crisis that engulfed had the firm, it had laid off some of its workers. Unfortunately for Mr Boateng, he was one of the affected workers. He did well to establish a provision store near his house at Nsuta-Mampong with his retrenchment money. Money received from the store as well as that generated from his wife, a tomato seller at Nsuta market, was all that was sustaining the family of four.

    Despite their work, living conditions for the Boateng family were hard. Nonetheless, they held firm in their trust in God. They were devout Christians and believed that the
