The Organic Animal Club Begins
Bert Bear was brown bear. He got a little bit bigger in the winter when he hibernated and ate more, as all bears do. Generally, he ate the wrong things, foods with too much salt and sugar. He did not realize that he ate things that were overly processed, such as frozen pizza and store-bought cookies. He ate cinnamon-sugar- donuts and too many of them. Also, he drank a lot of soda and ate candy. Sometimes, he did not enough vegetables or get any exercise.
Sometimes his tummy would hurt from all the gluten and wheat he ate at times in the pizza and cookies. He did not know why though. He just knew that after this year after all the television watching he had done on the couch, his pants did not fit and were too tight.
His best friend was Fred Fox, a red fox. Fred Fox was in tip-top shape because he was out and about all winter long, scooting across the snow. He was always on the move, jogging along the trails, and he always shopped at the organic farm market with their friend Olivia Owl. The market was held inside in the winter and moved outside in the summer.
Fred Fox made delicious gluten-free homemade veggie pizzas. Bert Bear liked the way those tasted, but he did not know how to make them or cook that much either. Bert Bear was always on the couch watching television when Fred Fox and Olivia Owl went to the farmers' market anyhow. They were both in good shape, felt well. and seemed healthy. Though, Olivia Owl had an autoimmune condition and was highly allergic to certain foods like soy and peanuts, as well as indoor and outdoor allergens.
Olivia Owl always said, Fresh is best,
when she brought Bert Bear food or had him to dinner.
Maybe Olivia Owl is right,
thought Bert Bear. Maybe fresh is best.
Toward the end of winter, as Bert Bear slowly woke from hibernation, he noticed that he often sat on the sofa too long watching movies and playing video games. He was not terribly physically active either. In addition, eating frozen pizza and drinking soda made him feel more sluggish. It was a vicious cycle of eating and sleeping on the couch instead of getting fresh food and fresh air.
Bert Bear noticed that he had gained weight when he tried on his spring pants. They did not fit quite right. He was thinking about going for a walk since the sun had come out, and he had read about the benefits of vitamin D and sunshine.
Fred Fox came over to see Bert Bear and to bring him some salad and fresh berries. Bert Bear came out from the bedroom
