Mary's Baby Church Tales - Mary Heyn

    Goodbye Jesus, Hello Church

When Jesus’ friends all met together they asked, "Is it now

That you will bring God’s kingdom back to Israel somehow?"

Jesus said, ‘It’s not for you to know the times or dates.

The Father will decide when he will open heaven’s gates.

But you will get God’s power when the Holy Spirit’s here

And you will be my witnesses to all, both far and near."

Just as he was saying this they saw him lifted high,

And, as they looked, a cloud came out and hid him from their eyes.

Two men in white stood near and asked, "Why look up in the sky?

Jesus will return just as you’ve seen him lifted high.

So, from the Mount of Olives they went to Jerusalem

And locked themselves up in the upper room where they stayed then.

One day Peter stood to speak of Judas who was dead,

Said, "Let us choose another man to take his place instead.

They nominated two men named Barsabbas and Matthias.

The lot fell to Matthias, like bishops who lead and guide us.

On the feast of Pentcost when they were all together

A sound came like a mighty wind or sudden change of weather.

It came from heaven and it filled the house where they were staying.

Then they saw bright tongues of fire come down where they were praying.

They separated, came to rest on each of them and filled them

With the Holy Spirit and God’s mighty power that thrilled them.

They began to speak in tongues the Holy Spirit gave.

They spoke with boldness of God’s love and mighty power to save.

Now, there were in Jerusalem Jews from every nation.

Each heard them speaking his own language filled with great elation.

Utterly amazed, they asked, "Are these not Galileans?

We all speak diferent languages and wonder what this means.

Why do they speak a language that I know for sure is mine?"

Some, however, laughed, and said, We know they’re drunk with wine.

Peter,, filled with courage, stood up then and raised his voice.

He said, "These men aren’t drunk, for drinking wine is not their choice.

This is what the prophet Joel wrote in our history,

‘In these last days,’God said, ‘I will pour out my Spirit free.

On your sons and daughters I will pour out prophecy.

Your young men will see visions. I will make them see like me.

Your old men will dream dreams again, and even on your slaves

I’ll pour my Spirit out and show them I’m the God who saves.’

Men of Israel, hear this. Jesus was approved by God.

He did God’ works among you, even here on your own sod.

You handed him to death with help from evil, wicked men.

You nailed him to a cross and thought you’d finished with him then.

But God freed him from death because death simply couldn’t keep

It’s hold on him. The Father called to wake him from that sleep.

So let all know that Jesus whom you crucified is Lord."

The people cried, What shall we do now that we’ve heard this word?

Peter said, "You must repent and be baptized today

In the name of Jesus Christ to wash your sins away.

Then you’ll receive the Holy Spirit promised now to you

And all those, even those far off, whom God calls to be new."

    Three thousand were baptized
