It was on the Chebar River with the exiled Jews

Ezekiel, son of Buzi, heard God's fresh, amazing news.

'The hand of God came on me as a storm wind from the north;

Four animals appeared in lightning flashes coming forth.

Each had four faces, human form, and four wings poised for flight.

Their hooves, like oxen's, glittered like brass in the blinding light.

They faced four ways with wings that touched and didn't turn away.

They went out covering the earth, but didn't stay or stray.

Among them brands of flashing fire like torches came between,

And under each of them a glistening wheel came on the scene.

The wheels seemed one inside the other; they all looked alike.

I saw them more clearly with each flashing lightning strike.

Their rims were full of eyes and those wheels lifted off the ground

They moved forward as the spirit urged them with a roaring sound.

The animals moved together; light shone over all their heads;

The voice of God was storm-like, loud enough to wake the dead.

On a high and lofty throne sat one who seemed a man.

His top half shone like fire, and below, a rainbow band.

I fell down on my face, adoring; all my strength had drained.

In my mind and in my spirit only God remained.

God said, 'Son of man, stand up, for I will speak to you.

The spirit made me stand up on my feet, now strong and new.

God said, 'I'm sending you back to those rebel Israelites.

'Til now they and their ancestors defied me day and night.

Whether they hear or not they'll know a prophet came today.

And you, don't be afraid of them, no matter what they say.

They are a set of rebels who defy me through the land.

Now, listen to my words and don't be like that rebel band.
