    CHAPTER ONE

Emma Mae and the Baby Swing

Once there was a wonderful, strong, smart little girl named Emma Mae. She lived with her mother, father, big brother Kevin and big sister Kate, as well as her dog Snowflake and her rabbit Snuffles.

Even at three years old, she was quite the grown up young lady. She knew her ABC’s and could read many words. With all her sparkling white teeth, she could chew carrots dipped in hummus and eat red peppers, lettuce, cherry tomatoes and, best of all, macaroni and cheese. She swam with the Minnows, a group for beginning swimmers at the neighborhood pool. She also took dance and gymnastic lessons.

Sometimes Emma yearned to be an even bigger girl like her wonderful, strong, smart big sister Kate, who had just turned ten. Emma and her best friend, another three-year-old named Mary, liked to put on Kate’s clothes, go through her jewelry box, and put on bracelets and necklaces. They pretended to read her chapter books. They also took it upon themselves to redecorate the sisters’ shared bedroom. They painted the bunk beds with Kate’s sparkling pink nail polish.

But sometimes Emma Mae yearned to be a baby again. She managed to stash pacifiers in her lower bunk even though her parents thought they had thrown them all away. Every now and then, she would be discovered snuggled in her favorite quilt with a pacifier in her mouth. The dentist said, You are too old for a pacifier. Give it up.

Sometimes Emma would beg for warm milk in a bottle, but Mommy would bring her milk in a sippy cup. Mommy would say, You are a big girl now, Emma.
