About this ebook
Life for the narrator is filled with a variety of challenges, and the solutions to understanding life and solving problems are inspired by Scripture. Nevertheless, solutions are difficult and often require creative efforts. Sometimes dysfunctional family members provide unexpected but loving support. Then through the invitation of a friend, life changes and what had seemed impossible becomes possible. Discover the difference in life when one is determined, but not joyful, when one is hopeful but insecure.

Dedication
I dedicate this book to the two people in my life who have most clearly encouraged and supported me throughout many years and many endeavors: my mother and my husband. Gertrude Evans Morton, now deceased, was a single parent and a divorcee in the 1940s and 1950s—a time when divorce was unusual and broadly unacceptable by middle-class standards. Supporting a family of five as a food server, a worker in a paper mill and later as a telephone operator, she was the strongest woman I have ever known. Alan Adams Burgess has created a work ethic second to none and a commitment to continued learning in his distinguished career. He has totally supported the effort to help endow a scholarship through the proceeds of this volume. The love of these two outstanding people has inspired me to complete this work.
"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace …
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit."
Galatians 5: 22, 25
Acknowledgements
In writing these little stories, I have sought the help and advice of friends who have critical insight. I am grateful for the ideas of Mrs. Teresa Bensch, who is beginning her own graduate studies at Lexington Theological Seminary and who still found the time to read many of these stories. I must also thank Mrs. Kathy Elliott, a former elementary school teacher, for her insightful comments about levels of language, word choice in reading to children and placement of inspirational quotations. In addition, Dr. Sandra Matthews, a professional colleague and writing professor, introduced me to readability studies and their value as she offered other specific advice as well. The help of these competent people supported my creating this project.
Mrs. Faye Shannon, a wizard in art and graphics skills, is responsible for the way this manuscript appears. Without her patient and insightful help, this book would never have been completed. In addition, I thank Mr. John Fayad, a book coach, who read and advised me on some of these stories, and kindly offered the title for this small volume. I am indebted to each of these remarkable people for their time, insight and suggestions. I also thank Jenn Seiler of West-Bow Press for her help and information. And finally, I appreciate the four supporters who have been willing to endorse this work: Dr. Faye Clark, Rev. Danny Gulden, Mrs. Sarah Larson, and Mr. Donald Weber. Any errors, however, in this story collection are my responsibility.

Preface
When I first conceived of this little book, I was writing stories inspired by Scripture for an Advent booklet (non-published) that Sandy Springs Christian Church produced for its members. After my retirement, I helped create a scholarship for graduating seniors at that church (2003-2006). A very supportive congregation has enabled
