About this ebook

This book is a compendium of insights from sermons and books of great preachers of the Word of God. It illuminates how God created the world in six days following His blueprint. It reveals that man is created in the image of God. It explains the significance of the nation of Israel in Gods divine program. It discloses the origin and effect of sin on all of humanity. It disputes the atheistic opinions of the existence of God. It concludes with the fulfillment of Gods plan as the King of Kings of the combined heaven and earth in the New Jerusalem.

This book was written with the guidance of the Holy Spirit to bring some light to this darkening world. As Perry Comos song goes: It is better to light just one little candle than to stumble in the dark.

This book is dedicated to my beloved parents, Ricardo S. Ungab and Teresa Ave Bonotan, and to all my loving siblings: Dina, David, Jacobo, Job, Daniel, Samuel, Olimpio. I would also make a special mention of my loving husband, Claude Edward Mitchell Jr., and, in loving memory, of John Dumont Hudson.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This book was written after many years of contemplation and determination to find a satisfactory answer to the big question about the existence of God in relation to the speck of life that I am on the surface of the earth within this vast universe.

I gratefully acknowledge Zondervan for the New International Version Study Bible because I found this version easy to understand. I also acknowledge the Christian Television Networks, Daystar, and TBN, which are based in the United States of America for broadcasting a buffet of Christian ministries by which I could feast on the Word of God every day. Watching sermons by various preachers and singing along with beautiful hymns, anthems, and special music helped me tremendously to gain insights on the Word of God. These also helped me to grow in the wisdom and knowledge of God whereby, I sincerely believe, the Holy Spirit has guided me to develop my personal perspective on the subject of creation and Christianity.

Unless otherwise noted, all verses of Scripture are taken from the NIV Study Bible, which supports every point included in this book. The reader can read them right here in the text instead of locating them in a separate Bible every time the Scripture is referred to.

I give all the glory to God.

    INTRODUCTION

Scientists have discovered that there is no absolute time reference anywhere in the universe because there are so many factors that affect time: distance from the sun, curvature of space, gravity, size of the earth, rotation of the earth, and other things.

One thing I know is that a sprint for a specific distance—such as a hundred-meter dash—is a race against time. The fastest runner is the one who uses the fewest seconds.

Another thing I observed from experience is that time seems to slow down when I am agonizing in a difficult situation. Unquestionably time only moves forward. It never stops or waits for anything. It just stretches on and on to eternity. Oftentimes a sad question hits me: how long until this difficult situation will be over? The Bible is full of frustrating and disappointing circumstances that made people cry out, How long …? Most of these cries are directed to the Lord.

The saddest situation I’ve found in Scripture is in the book of Habakkuk where the prophet cried out, O Lord, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear? (Habakkuk 1:2 KJV). Ironically, Jesus cried out similar words: Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? (Matthew 17:17 KJV).

On the other hand, time goes by in a hurry when I am enjoying myself and having much pleasure. Then I don’t want time to go by. While no human being can do anything to hold up time, someone greater than the whole universe is controlling time in His hands. He knows the beginning, the ending, and everything that happens in between. He is the creator of heaven and earth. He is transcendent, eternal, supernatural, omniscience, omnipresent, omnipotent, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is Jehovah, the great I AM. He is the God of the universe. He is sometimes referred to as Father Time because He had declared the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

God said to Abraham, I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it (Genesis 15:7). I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless (Genesis 17:1).

To Abraham’s son Isaac, God said, I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham (Genesis 26:24).

To the world, God said, I am the LORD your God … You shall have no other gods before me (Exodus 20:2a, 3).

Isaiah said about God, Do you know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow weary, and his understanding no one can fathom (Isaiah 40:28).

God is revealing Himself to all generations of people in the world through the Holy Scriptures. The Bible is God’s Word, written by His chosen and faithful servants—the priests and prophets of the Old Testament as well as the disciples and apostles of the Son of God, Jesus the Christ of the New Testament. We are assured that the Bible is the Word of God by the apostle Paul in his letter to the church in Thessalonica: And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe (1 Thessalonians 2:13).

Chapter 1 in this book endeavors to persuade unbelievers that there is a God who created the world and all living things in six literal twenty-four-hour days. As the Creator, God planned and streamlined the universe to function efficiently above, below, and around the surface of the earth for the benefit of man by keeping the environment suitable and comfortable for man’s existence. For this is what the Lord says—He, who created the heavens, He is God; He who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited—he says: ‘I am the Lord, and there is no other’ (Isaiah 45:18).

God created man in His image. However, He is still working on perfecting the spiritual image of everyone to conform to His nature so that in the end His will shall be done on earth as well as in heaven.

Chapter 5 of this book brings to focus the nation of Israel as the earth’s capital nation. God had a purpose when He initially established the nation of Israel from one person, Abraham. God chose Abraham’s descendants, through Abraham’s son Isaac and grandson Jacob, to be God’s messengers in word and deed, making God’s existence and His purposes known throughout the world. Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Daniel, Esther, Paul, and others demonstrated profound loyalty to the cause of the God of Israel, even though they were in foreign lands. God’s divine intention for humanity is that they can be one in thoughts, words, and actions with their maker, starting with Adam and Eve.

God desires man to be one in Spirit with Jesus Christ as Jesus is one with the Father God. He had to start a nation with Abraham, the father of faith in God, so that his descendants would become His messengers to spread the word to the world that He is God, the creator of heaven, earth, and all living things, and that He alone deserves to be worshipped for who He is for eternity. God intended for Israel—and particularly the New City of Jerusalem—to be the seat of His kingdom when He forever rules as king of the combined heaven and earth.

God longs for His people to obey His commandments so that they can be with Him forever. But man is rebellious by nature. At the beginning, Eve and Adam surrendered God’s authority over their way of life to the Serpent in the garden of Eden by disobeying what God had specifically commanded them not to do. Since then, man has been following their lead by trying to ignore God’s reign, by discarding any knowledge about Him, and by promoting false impressions that everything came to existence by mere chance—never mind how everything actually started out. If they could, proponents of the theory of evolution would conspire with the authorities in the government and educational institutions to get the current and future generations to believe that everything started like a game of chance.

Some renowned scientists even say that an accident caused everything to exist. To me, this is absurd. What circumstances could possibly cause an accident, per se, if nothing existed as yet? And if anything did exist that could have been involved in an accident, what or who could have caused that accident? Besides, an accident denotes chaos. In Chapter 6, I intend to show exactly why this view of the universe doesn’t hold up. When examined closely, creation appears orderly, systematized, organized, and regularized because it was created by a God of peace, love, and mercy whose wisdom is beyond human comprehension.

In the Bible, particularly in the gospel of Luke, when the angel told Mary that she would have a baby without knowing a man, she asked, How can this be? We would have asked the same question about God’s creation if we were not told about it in Scripture.

So let’s settle and get comfortable for a little while as we examine some verses in the Scripture about who we are, how we came about, why we are here, where we are going, and above all, who is responsible for the existence of the universe and man.

Our lives are but a vapor, so we cannot know everything. Nevertheless, we can have a glimpse of who we are in light of who God is.

The phrase in the beginning connotes time. Time is a mysterious phenomenon. It encompasses the past, present, and future. How fast does the present pass, and how long is the future from the present? Who can tell? Time is beyond our comprehension. However, I can be sure about one aspect of time: it has a beginning. I can start from this moment now, go back to when I was born, trace my genealogy back as far as I can, and know that I have roots deep in the past. When I look at an event, a story, a place, a race, and everything else, I find that they all have beginnings. The Bible begins, In the beginning God made the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1). This is the beginning of all beginnings. Yet the Bible also ends with these words: I am the Beginning and the End (Revelation 22:13). Does this mean that everything begins and ends with God?

I have to include the full stories of events as evidence that things did happen in the Bible to reveal God’s power, might, and sovereignty to do as He pleased for love of His creatures—and especially us humans. The narrative of the six days of creation is a story that only God can reveal because it occurred when everything began and then moved on from the very beginning. The same is true of the story of Noah and the Ark, the Exodus of the Israelites, the presence of Jesus with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the burning furnace, and many more stories that may solidify man’s faith in the Creator. All of these stories culminate with the revelation of the kingdom of God in the final turn of history.

As the sun sets and rises again tomorrow, time rolls by. Yesterday becomes history, and tomorrow is just a mystery. Today—the here and now—is all we have to be aware of. It is a gift from the great I AM, which is why it is called the present. But the one who gave us the present also owns yesterday and tomorrow.

It is my fervent prayer that this book will touch those who do not believe in God, that they may change their minds to choose to serve Him as their personal Lord and Savior.

For others who are crippled by overwhelming confusion because of modern teachings by so-called intellectuals, I pray that their minds may find clarity about who God is.

For those who possess hope in the life to come and have Jesus reigning in their hearts, may this book help them to be strong and steadfast in the faith until the day of the Lord Jesus because He is coming soon.

    CHAPTER 1

Did God Create the World in Six Days?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters (Genesis 1:1–2).

The greatest controversy about the Genesis creation story is the making of the world as it is today in six literal days. Scientists in the fields of geology, archeology, and paleontology have jointly studied fossils and dated them as being around long, long before the six days of creation. Therefore, the Bible verses regarding creation are absurd to them.

However, paleontologists cannot be sure of the ages of fossils, because preserved fossils typically lack the radioactive elements needed for radiometric dating and can be accurate only to within 0.5 percent. Radioactive elements are common only to rocks with volcanic origin, so the only fossil-bearing rocks that can be dated radiometrically are volcanic ash layers, which may provide clues through the intervening elements. But they still cannot conclude beyond reasonable doubt the exact ages of these fossils.

Scientists have used other techniques to date fossils. Biostratigraphy uses index fossils, but it achieves misleading results because it is very difficult to match rocks of the same age across continents.¹ Calamities such as earthquakes and floods just topple the rocks down, burying upper fragments and making it impossible to know which rocks were originally on top of the others. Thus we see erosion lines that are disorganized and broken. If there were fossils in between the rocks, it would be hard to determine which rock they belonged to.

Theologian Finis Jennings Dake, who authored Dake’s Annotated Reference Bible, Bible Truths Unmasked and other books dealing with the Word of God, has a similar take on the subject of the six days of creation. In his book God’s Plan for Man, he agrees with the idea that heaven and earth existed before the six days of creation, but he elucidates further, saying that God destroyed that world and its social system because it was wicked and was ruled by Satan after he was driven out of heaven and landed on earth. Dake also uses fossils as evidence to support his treatise. Furthermore, he believes that for an unknown period there was a social system on the earth ruled by Lucifer—before Adam was created—drawing upon the words of Isaiah 14:12: How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! Dake says that, because of wickedness, God swept away all living creatures with a catastrophic flood before the six days of creation.²

Contrary to Dake’s proposition, the Bible never mentions that God destroyed the earth and created it again. During the great flood, God destroyed all land creatures, including man, because of wickedness, but He saved Noah’s family in the ark along with pairs of animals and seven pairs of clean animals for burnt offering and consumption. This happened more than a thousand years after the days of Adam and Eve.

The Bible says that God commissioned Isaiah and Jeremiah to be His spokesmen. God spoke through their mouths about events that were to happen in either the near or distant future. Through Jeremiah, God said that chaos, emptiness, and darkness had returned to Jeremiah’s time because of man’s disobedience. This was after the flood when Israel and his descendants were already living in the Land of Promise. This contradicts Dake’s assertion that this event had already happened before the six days of creation. Dake’s use of fossils as evidence of that fateful period confuses the narrative of creation during the specified six days. To clear this up, we have to look high and low into the nooks and crevices of the wide-opened book of the Scripture to find the truth.

In the Bible, God does not mention specifically that living creatures existed before the six days of creation. Satan was not given the ability to create, although God created Satan, the Devil. Satan was originally an angel, so he is a spiritual being. He turned into a deceiving spirit. He was the angel of light who wanted to be God, so he was thrown from heaven into the outer darkness along with a third of the angelic hosts that had followed him. God put out the light He’d shone on Lucifer and threw him out to the outer darkness. Then God changed Lucifer’s name to Satan so he could not give off light to shine in the darkness.

Out of revenge, Satan entered into God’s creatures as demons for one reason: to create havoc and utter confusion to ruin their peace and joy. Satan is the Father of Lies. He causes this confusion so that even among believers there are conflicting views regarding this matter of the six days of creation.

Some Christian scientists go along with the fossil evidence that says the earth is millions and millions of years old. While it is rare for a scientist to offer a testimony of faith in God, Francis Collins, who is one of the most distinguished scientists of our time and is responsible for breakthrough discoveries benefiting mankind, believes without a doubt that the big bang happened and that the theory of evolution explains the marvelous complexity and diversity of life. He wrote about this in his book The Language of God. He further states that the relatedness of all species is explained through the process of evolution.³ This belief certainly contradicts the six-days-of-creation narrative in the Bible. Francis Collins may be a believer in God, but he proves to himself that the Bible is not true, as it is written in Genesis 1:26 that on the sixth day God formed man and breathed on him the breath of life.

There is a possibility in the natural realm that rock specimens can be dated back to perhaps millions of years before the six days of creation because the Bible does not specify how old the heavens and earth were before God saw the dark, empty, void earth in the deep. But living things could not have been that old. Paleontologists are just estimating dates because it is difficult to work on fossil ages, which I indicated at the beginning of this chapter. Using the technique of stratigraphy to date fossils, they decipher the layer cake of rocks, which normally form horizontal layers, presuming each layer to be younger than the one underneath it. If the fossil is found between two layers whose ages are known, the fossil’s age is claimed to lie between the two known ages. But rock sequences are not continuous. They may be broken up by faults or periods of erosion, and it is very difficult to match up rock beds that are directly adjacent. The problem with fossil dating is that paleontologists haven’t really perfected the dating technique, yet they use the dates they’ve established to support their theory that the earth is millions of years old. One thing they are sure of, though, is that fossils appear to indicate where catastrophic events—such as earthquakes, floods, or meteor strikes—have occurred. These things considered, they still do not change the narrative of the six days of creation.

Specimens are material things, so scientists can use them to prove their points. The Bible also refers to material evidence to prove that certain historical events truly occurred. Just consider the names of nations mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible; Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Babylon, and even India are mentioned. They still exist and participate in the current events and flow of history in the modern age. Their cultures have roots that date back to the times of the Bible.

Most importantly, the nation of Israel and its people are the center of religious discussions because Israel was Jesus’s hometown when He was on earth. Nobody can dispute that the Ten Commandments were written by God. Why is the creation story misunderstood when it is written in plain and simple language that everybody can understand? Just thinking about accusing God as a liar makes me tremble with fear.

The Bible is not only a book of material evidence, but it is also a book of faith. The Bible defines faith as being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Hebrews 1:1). By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible (Hebrews 1:3).

No human being witnessed the creation of the world, but we know that it was created by God if we have faith in His words. His only witness was His Son, Jesus, who is the Word of God. God is not human. He is supernatural. He is the Creator. The writers of the Bible attempt to convince readers to have faith in God as the Creator of everything and to maintain that faith in God as the one who controls the current of time and events of His creation because God cannot lie. God is not man, that he should lie (Numbers 23:19). God is the author of righteousness, goodness, and compassion. What good can it do for Him to misrepresent His
