About this ebook

They say we live in the sewers among the dirt and filth. But tell me, who built the sewers? Not us. Who fills the land with rubbish? Not us. Who throws their uneaten food out into the street? We dont. Who drives the cars and the lorries that pollute our beautiful world? Not us.

They say you are never more than six feet away from one of us in the big city. Well you may be closer than you think just look in the mirror.

Children, I beg you to study hard at school so you may be able to put right what your ancestors got wrong.

O ne day, a small boy sat on the pavement

crying, his face red and sore. As he sat, he heard a voice saying, What’s the matter? He looked round and saw nothing. The boy dropped his head in his hands. I’m down here, called the voice, and the boy jumped up. Don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you, said the voice. The boy looked down and saw a big rat. Why are you crying? asked the rat. What’s your name?

Oh did he? said the rat. Follow me. Come on. We don’t want anyone to see us. Tommy followed the rat down the muddy lane. Come on in here, called the rat. Get on your tummy and crawl in this small space. That’s better. No one saw us. Come on. Follow me.
