Chapter 1
The Stolen Shoes
C:\Users\Judy\Downloads\computer-627220_1920.jpgMom, I can’t find my pair of black Nikes,
Tommy Miles said as he sifted through piles of dirty and clean t-shirts on his bedroom floor. They are my good pair and I want to wear them for my birthday. I’ve looked everywhere!
he said as his t-shirt and jeans became a blur of green and blue in the Saturday morning light.
Tommy’s slender dark-haired mother walked into his room and said, Tommy, if you had looked everywhere, you would have found them. I swear you would lose your feet if they weren’t attached to your ankles, and then you probably would just lose your ankles also.
It’s not funny, mom,
Tommy said as he focused his blue eyes on her green ones. Maybe somebody stole them!
If somebody broke into our house to steal something, I think they would grab something more valuable than a pair of gym shoes.
Mom! Geez! They call them athletic shoes now. Maybe the thief was a kid my size. Maybe he was a homeless kid with no shoes.

They get moved,
Tommy said.
His mother just shook her head. She looked around his room for a few minutes without finding the shoes, casually sorting the piles of dirty clothes as she went. Finally, she shrugged her shoulders.
See mom, stolen!
Tommy said triumphantly.
Tommy Miles, my life would be a lot simpler if somebody just stole you,
she said with a grin.
Well my shoes would be easier to find if I were in them,
Tommy said. They looked at one another and soon they both were laughing uncontrollably. This went on for about a minute, then Tommy said, Mom, we’re never going to find them if we don’t stop laughing.
Somehow, this had the opposite effect and soon his mom was rolling on the bed in laughter. Tommy laughed so hard, he fell off the bed. He put his hand under the edge of the bed to push himself up, and he felt something soft under his hand. He ran his fingers over the object and he felt laces.
I think I just found my shoes,
Tommy said. I remember now. I sat on the edge of the bed and tried them on, then dad called me to go out and cut the lawn and I quick took them off so I wouldn’t get them dirty. I guess they didn’t get stolen.
I never had a doubt they were in this room somewhere,
his mother said. Put on your shoes and join us downstairs for breakfast brunch.
