    (Straight) Foreword

The main title of this book RIGHT FOOT FIRST, is intended to re-direct attention to a SUCCESS FORMULA that dates back to the invention of dirt. Common to humans, animals and nature alike, the Right Foot First principle has become such a part of our daily activities, that we sometimes take it for granted.

Deviation whether deliberate or accidental usually results in frustration, disappointment, misunderstanding, embarrassment, waste of time, lost opportunities, long wait on lines, missed flights, and a thick book length of other inconveniencies. More serious consequences may include motor vehicle accidents,

Fires, electrical outages in homes, serious physical injuries or even death.

RIGHT FOOT FIRST PRINCIPLE : Is the carrying out of a series of actions in a sequence that is necessary to achieving a successful, safe and sensible outcome.

Much of what I share in this book and the advice that I offer about personal safety strategies, and wellness, awareness, and keep-fit practices is based on aspects of my own life experience and training over several years. I also draw on my understanding of the teachings of world-renowned masters in their respective fields, including Deepak Chopra, Oprah Winfrey, Bob Marley, Les Brown, Jim Rohn, Darren Hardy, Tony Robbins, Brendon Burchard, Bryan Tracy, Eckhart Tolle, Wayne Dyer, Dean Graziosi, and of course, my own parents, Thomas and Ma’Lawr (Laura).

I add my little bit to the debate on what it means not just to live, but to have a life. I even venture to give my own opinion on, and definition of, well-being, self-safety, and wellness. (Wikipedia has nothing to fear from me, however.) The experts listed above have written books and taught on these same topics.

    I wanted to help.

Here’s the real reason why I wrote this book that you are now holding in your hand. (You may wait until you get to the final page before deciding if this is true, or just take my word for it.) The real, truth-to-God reason is that I hurt deeply when I see people suffer physical abuse and injury, when I see people getting kicked, slapped, punched, stabbed, slashed, and shot. I hurt deeply when I see bad guys intentionally causing great physical and emotional pain, and in some instances apparently having fun while they are doing it.

    I wanted to help.

That’s it. Pure and simple. I knew that I could offer very practical and workable solutions—simple, effective self-protection strategies that can be adopted, practiced, and applied in situations that pose potential danger to your well-being.

I am touched to the core when I see a baby, or a young person, or an adult for that matter, taken to the emergency room with half of his or her face ripped off by an off-the-leash pit bull.

My heart breaks every time I hear about a fellow human being living with facial or bodily disfigurement or other visible marks of physical violence and brutality, inflicted intentionally by thugs or even worse, by someone they knew and trusted, such as a partner or spouse.

Do not judge me or consider me insensitive, but let me say—not in a mean way—that I am tired of hearing the following:

I never believed this [heinous crime] could happen in our neighborhood.

He seemed like such a nice person, always smiling, never walking by without saying, ‘Hello.’ Who could have known he’d commit such a gruesome act?

It’s about time the city [or village or dog owners] does something about these pit bulls running loose on our block.

Such words are uttered usually out of genuine shock, dismay, stark anger, or frustration after the commission of some heinous crime or an all-too-common deadly mauling by a pit bull.

Remember the saying, Whenever you point a finger to blame someone or something else, three of your own fingers are pointing back at you.

Rather than waiting for someone else to do something about it, I propose that you set about learning and developing the skills that you need to protect yourself and loved ones against loose pit bulls and heartless thugs.

Avoid at all cost the pitfall of overwhelming hopelessness. Don’t allow stark fear and uncertainty ** to dampen your spirits and zest for life. We must wise up, sharpen our consciousness, and be aware of what is out there.

And what about ignorance and naiveté? Okay, let’s say I am welcoming to Earth a first-time visitor from some distant planet. I spend the first hour or so telling her or him about the seven wonders of our world and our four seasons. I would describe the beautiful flowers found in lawns and gardens all over the globe from springtime until the end of summer, the changing of the leaves during fall, and the snow-covered ground in winter.

I would mention kind-hearted folks who volunteer to feed the hungry and homeless, and who help an elderly person cross a busy street. Then I’d mention a few of our icons, such as Mother Teresa, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Nelson Mandela, Bob Marley, and Mahatma Gandhi.

I would describe the actions of brave and kind-hearted people who, without thought for their own lives, rushed into the burning wreckage of the toppled Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, giving up their own lives trying to save others. For good measure, I would throw in the names of Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, and Harry Belafonte; musicians whose popularity and appeal reach every corner of our planet, albeit in a different category, and for different reasons than those who gave their lives to save others.

Just when our visitor’s eyes (if he or she has eyes) start to light up in anticipation of a carefree life of bliss on our planet, I would drop the bombshell (a poor choice of words, I admit).

I would say, Don’t be fooled. We earthlings have not yet figured out a way to accurately read each other’s thoughts. Therefore, despite all the wonders, kind-heartedness, beauty, music, and art that exist on our planet, you cannot afford to let down your guard. As you go about enjoying the sight and sounds, whether you are alone or mingling with people, enjoy and have fun. But be vigilant, keep your radar charged up, and stay attuned to what is happening around you.

You see, I’d conclude, there are bad guys and gals—thugs—out there in the crowd, and a breed of dog we call the pit bull.

WHO IS GONNA BODYGUARD THE BODYGUARD?

It is not beyond the realm of possibility that high-profile men and women (the rich and famous) may someday face the arduous task of coming to the aid of their own bodyguards. And I’m talking here about men and women from POTUS down to the high-profile hip-hop artist being driven to his gig on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood or at the Bellagio in Atlantic City.

I’m talking about people such as politicians, millionaires, movie stars, hip-hop artists, talk-show hosts, event promoters, executives, models, and star athletes—people who use the services of bodyguards. Dedicated to all of these people, the chapter titled Bodyguarding Your Bodyguard offers helpful ideas and practical, real-life solutions to the kind of problems that may arise when the protected is unexpectedly plunged into the role of protector.

In that chapter, I’ve listed some easy safety procedures and strategies that can be used to avert or minimize injury or damage, and even save lives, in a variety of emergency situations—shootings; attacks by thugs, overzealous fans, violent stalkers, or rival entities; natural disasters; stampedes; or a run-in with an off-the-leash pit bull.

You could experience that fish-out-of-water feeling if the person whose job is to protect you becomes—God forbid—disabled or separated from you for any reason. (It is possible.)
