Jasmine the Flower That Never Blossomed - Romina Betvardeh

    Chapter 1

The whole reception felt as quiet as Jasmine's beautiful black eyes frozen at the entrance door.

Jasmine could not hear or see anybody apart from what she was staring at, it did not take long before her friends and family followed her looks. It seemed that she was frozen, but Jasmine wasn't frozen she was experiencing love at first sight, she was staring at a man with green eyes who was standing at the doorway waiting to be seated, in her heart she was praying that the empty seats on her table belonged to that man, and his party.

It did not take long before a waiter approached the man at the door to escort him and his company to a table. As the waitress was getting closer to Jasmine's table her little heart was pumping madly to a point where she almost lost her breath. When all of a sudden the waitress stopped at Jasmine's table and pointed to the empty seats. The man pulls a chair and sits right at the end of the table.

The gentle and shy young girl was experiencing something that she had never experienced before, she did not know what was happening. To her the feelings were so beautiful but scary.

When the man sat at his chair he could not keep his eyes off Jasmine, it seemed like they could not see anything else around them, their eyes were locked on each other and neither of them knew what was happening to them or how to control these feelings.

In all her life Jasmine had never danced, she was a shy, hard-working, person that spent her time working or by isolating herself in her room with very loud music, or going for long drives.

Jasmine was so used to her lonely life that she always told her family she would never fall in love or get married. She told them 'who would want to get married and have children?', that she was happy the way she did what she want when she wanted, If I get married then I will have to put up with someone else and even if I do not like something I will have to do it because of the other person. She had told them all more than once.

But at this very special moment Jasmine is praying that the man would come and ask her for a dance. As she was praying with her head down. Oh God, please let him come and dance with me. When she was disturbed by a gentle voice from behind saying. Excuse me, would you give me the pleasure of this dance?

Jasmine looked up and it was him. 'Oh my God it's him.' For a few seconds she could not talk, her heart was pumping so fast that she felt it is going to stop any minute. Then, without saying anything she got up and started walking towards the dance floor.

Everybody was amazed at her behaviour, as over the years she had rejected any offers of dance and if anyone asked her twice she would get aggravated and leave the party.

Jasmine always looked at men as if they were species from another planet and could never understand why although she rejected them they did not give up. Knowing Jasmine was a girl who always ignored men, but would just get up and follow a man to the dance floor, came as a shock to her friends and family, none of them knew what was going on in her heart and mind at that very moment.

As the man and Jasmine got to the dance floor the man with the green eyes offered his hand to her, she hesitated for a few seconds then she lands her shaky and tiny hand into his, that moment felt like nothing else she had ever experienced, she felt like suddenly she is in heaven, she could not see nor hear anybody else.

At that moment it felt like they are the only two people on the dance floor, at the first dance none of them could talk, their little hearts were pumping so fast that it made it impossible to have a conversation. It took half an hour and four dances when the guy opens his mouth.

Sorry I hope you don't think I am rude, my name is Norm. I do not know what happened to me it felt like I forgot how to talk. My heart my mind and mouth stopped functioning.

That is ok I felt the same way too, I am Jasmine. Jasmine replied.

Nice to meet you Jasmine, when we were waiting at the door I noticed you, not only could I not keep my eyes off you, but I could not believe that our seats were reserved on your table. It felt like god had answered my prayers in two seconds.

Sorry, Norm I did not mean to stare at you. Jasmine replied. But it felt like my eyes were glued on you and I had no control over them. Usually I avoid looking at people because I am scared they might talk to me or take me the wrong way, I too am not sure what is happening to me right now.

Jasmine and Norm giggled and danced for quite a few hours, at that moment they both were wishing that time would stop so that the music would not come to an end and take away their newly found happiness.

Every time a short break was announced they went back to their own seats and as soon as the music started Norm was back asking Jasmine for another dance.

Jasmine's friends and family were full of questions, they could not believe that she was dancing with the one person all night and how happy that quite shy girl was.

No one was aware of the world that Jasmine was in at that moment, for the first time in her entire life she felt her heart beats, right at that moment she was out of control, filled with joy and happiness.

Towards the end of the night when the break was announced the singer said. We will be back with a few slow songs to finish the night

At that announcement Norm said Jasmine, I will write my number and give it to you at the next dance.

Jasmine's heart became very sad, her short lived happiness was about to end, she got very emotional and had to control her feelings because she knew that taking Norms number and starting a relationship with him will be her worst nightmare because they were from different worlds, different religions.

A few minutes later the music started again and Norm came back and asked Jasmine for another dance, but this time she replied Sorry, no, I am very tired.

Norm could not believe what he was hearing, he said but it is the last dance.

Jasmine refused to get up and dance.

Norm at that moment felt so useless and turned around to her family and said. Please tell her to dance with me this is the last dance.

Jasmine's family did not understand why her behaviour had changed so suddenly, and thought she had acted very rude, and told her so.

Due to Norm's persistence and not giving up, Jasmine was told by her brother Jackson to get up and dance, and at that point she got up without saying a word and went to the dance floor.

Norm was so hurt by her behaviour he asked. We have been dancing all night and all I wanted to do was to give you my number so that we might meet sometimes.

But Norm, that's why I did not want to get up, because you know we should not see each other. What if we start seeing each other and what if we fall in love? You know I can't let this happen because my parents will not accept this.

Jasmine continued. What happened to me tonight was incredible, for the first time I felt my heart pumping the moment I laid my eyes on you. I kept on praying that you would be seated on our table. When that happened I was praying that you would come and ask me for a dance, then I automatically followed you to the dance floor and danced with you all night. Can't you see I am trying to avoid any future pain? If I do not have your number then we will not be in touch or see each other, and I will always remember tonight as the happiest night of my life, but if I take your number and keep on seeing you these feelings will grow stronger.

At the end of the song, Norm forced a piece of paper into Jasmine's hand and said. I hope to hear from you. I am ready to take my chances if you are.

When Jasmine got home that night she held the number in her hand all night and fell asleep with it.

The next morning she could not stop thinking about the previous night. All her family knew something was different. She was glowing from within and it shone in her eyes.

At the breakfast table it was her father, Jamal, who spoke first. That boy you were dancing with all night is not from our community. Do not get too tangled up with their kind.

Followed quickly by the mother, Maria. Oh hush now, 'Jimmy'. They are just young, and it will be good for your daughter to get out into the real world for a while. There will be no talk of settling down with anyone.

The nosey younger sister, Lizzy, was next to blurt out. Jasmine's got a fellow, Jasmine's got a fellow.

And that's enough from you too, miss Eliza. If it's up to you lot you'll all have poor Jasmine married next week. Maria was defensive and in no mood for squabbles. They all fell silent except Eliza.

It's Lizzy, all my friends call me Lizzy.

Later that morning, Jasmine's best friend Monika showed up, when she looked at Jasmine she asked. Are you alright? Are you tired? It seems that you are in another world

Jasmine asked in reply. Do you believe in love at first sight?

Monika laughed while saying you and love! You don't even look at men, how can you fall in love? Monika continued. It will be a miracle if you ever fall in love with someone.

Jasmine then told Monika all about the night before and explained how she can't get Norm off her mind.

If you are saying the truth, ring him now and talk to him Monika implored, ridiculing.

Jasmine, with a very sad voice said But I can't. If my family finds out that I want to go out with a man of a different religion they will give me hell! But if you do not believe me here is the number.

Then I will ring said Monika.

But Jasmine was too scared and refused to let Monika have the phone number. Even so, after only a matter of days, when Jasmine realized she can't stop thinking about Norm, she gave in and let Monika ring the number.

Monika dialled the number, a few seconds later a man answered the phone, he asked who is calling.

I found your number in the telephone directory and decided to call. Monika replied.

That is fine, you can talk to me but our number is not listed yet! The man said

Monika said. Well I got it somehow but I can't tell you how and if you want I will hang up

The Man said. No that is ok, we can talk, and I was bored too.

Jasmine's little heart got very sad as she thought that the man on the phone was Norm, she was thinking oh my god look how easy Norm is making friends with another woman on the phone without even knowing her, I am glad that I never called him because if he made friends with Monika so easily he will do it with other woman as well.

Monika and the man on the phone enjoyed each other's conversation so much that they ended up talking to each other for what seemed like hours. When they were saying goodbye the man asked Monika for her number.

Monika told the man she was sorry but would not give him her number right then but if he liked, she will call him again.

I would love that, but please do not make me wait for long. Call me, and if I am home we will talk. The man replied.

Jasmine was so disappointed and lost interest, she left the room and went for a walk missing half of Monika's conversation, when she came back to her room Monika asked her if she was upset.

Jasmine replied. Not really. It is better this way, now I am glad I never rang him.

Monika continued as if ignoring Jasmine. I asked Mike if he lives by himself, he said no he lives with his brother.

All of a sudden Jasmine started laughing and crying at the same time Monika got frightened and did not know what was happening to Jasmine and quickly asked what the matter was

Oh my god! All this time you were talking on the phone I thought it was Norm that picked the phone up. That is why I got upset and walked away, but in fact you were talking to his brother.

Monika then felt relieved and giggled a little too. She and Mike went on to become friends over the phone, and would talk to each other for hours.

This went on for weeks, but every time Mike asked Monika to meet she came up with so many excuses.

Eventually after a few months Monika wanted to meet with Mike because they had been talking to each other for so long, and now she thought it is time to meet the face behind that warm and kind voice. Monika wanted to know if he was as nice in person. Jasmine thought that by this time Monika was starting to have feelings for Mike.

Monika then realised that if it was not for Jasmine she would not have found this wonderful friendship, but she could not go by herself to meet Mike because her family would have asked her hundreds of questions.

Monika then decided to approach Jasmine and asked.

Jasmine, why don't you call Norm? she asked.

Jasmine said with a sigh. It has been months now. He probably has forgotten about me, and, what would I say to him now?

Monika pleaded. "Come on please. Maybe you should ring him. He might not have
