INTRODUCTION
One of the hardest times a mother can experience emotionally is having her children leave for college. When my first son, Meade, left home for college in another state it was hard coming downstairs every morning and not seeing his smiling face. Even worse was pulling in or out of the driveway and not seeing his car, a second reminder jolt! When his birthday came around I wanted to send him a Birthday Cake. After searching on- line I finally settled on a Shipped Carrot Cake that cost me over $90.00! When he received it he simply said it was ok, but not as good as yours.
Another jolt to my heart. I have always made a huge deal out of my kid’s birthdays, usually spanning a Birthday Week, so this was a total let down. I wanted to send him something that was delicious, pleasurable, and memorable of home and didn’t cost almost $100.00!
I started thinking about my most popular desserts, ones that my kids and all their friends love. These recipes come from a few places. Some come from my Mom and Grandmothers, who started me baking at a very young age. Most of these are recipes I have received from friends, where I’ve tried something they brought to a potluck and said that’s great! Can I have the recipe?
Or by modifying one of the hundreds of recipes from School Cookbooks that I have been coerced into buying (either by the schools my kids were attending at the time or a child or mother hawking them at my door as a fundraiser for their school.) In Tennessee, I also get plenty of exposure to church, neighborhood or company cookbooks, which usually my patients give
