    Chapter 1

    The Fox and the Chicken

T he fox went to visit the chicken and faked to be her friend. One evening while the chicken went to visit a sick aunt, the fox volunteered to look after the baby chicks.

What are their names? asked the fox.

I have not given them a name yet, answered the chicken

If you let me, I will give them a name, that one sunrise, the dark one midday and the red one the evening.

And what is my name? asked the chicken.

I will call you midnight, answered the fox with a very strange smile.

When the fox left, the porcupine that had seen the whole thing, said severely to the chicken. How can you trust the fox? Don’t you know that he wants to eat you and the baby chicks? He will eat one at sunrise, one at midday, one in the evening. Then she will eat you at midnight when you come back from your visit.

The chicken felt that the porcupine was right, and she started to cry, she did not know what to do to keep her baby chicks safe. The porcupine advised to hide the baby chicks in a big tree that was near by, and to place in the nest boiling oil and thorns. The chicken obeyed, and when the fox arrived the next day, he jumped in the nest, and fell in the boiling oil and the thorns. The fox started to scream for the pain and damn the chicken. The screams arrived all the way to the tree, and the stupid chicken started to feel sorry for the fox, and when she heard the fox call her ungrateful, she felt sorry to have listened to the porcupine, and perhaps the fox wanted to really be her friend. So she went to help her and save her.

The fox was so angry that she wanted to eat her right away. But she thought if she planned to eat the baby chicks she needed to know where they were hiding. So she decided to play the friendly scene again.

But my dear Midnight? why did you did this, I am trying to be your friend?

It was the porcupine, he told me not to trust you, and he made me hide my baby chicks.

The porcupine was listening to all of this, and he could not believe what he was hearing.

And where are the baby chicks?. If you tell me I will come tonight and bring a gift and make peace.

The chicken told her where they were hiding, and the fox left all satisfied.

When the fox was gone, the porcupine came out.

How could you be so stupid? Now you told her where the baby chicks are and she will eat them. Do you really believe she is going to bring you a present? You should have seen how high she jumped to get in the nest, if the baby chicks had been there, they will be all dead.

The chicken realized that the porcupine was right, she asked for forgiveness, and together decided to set a trap for the fox. When the fox arrived, the trap came out and the fox find herself with a rope around her neck. Again, she screamed and tried to fool the chicken.

I was bringing a present for you and your baby chicks?

When she saw the porcupine, she said, You, mean porcupine, I am sure this is your fault. Why don’t you mind your own business?

Why, are you trying to take advantage of the stupidity of the other people. I know what you planned to do to that poor chicken. Confess your real reason, and I will free you, then go away and never come back.

The fox confessed to the chicken what her plan was, and promised to never come back.

From then on the fox never came back and no one knows what happened.

    Chapter 2

Why the Spiders Stay Always in a Corner

I n a far far away land, many centuries ago, there was a terrible dry that killed almost all men and animals.

In this city lived a family of spiders, the head of the family was Anas, the male spider, he had good sense, he had placed in a large field food that will give nutriment to his whole family. But the dryness became worst, and one day Anas told his wife:

My dear, if I should die, please bury me in our field, so that I can be next to you after death.

    The wife promised.

One sad day, Anas died. The wife and the children cried very much then buried him as he had requested. But actually Anas was not dead; he had faked his death so he could eat everything in the field.

Night came, Anas woke up, made a tunnel, started to eat till he was full. The next morning, when the wife saw that the field was empty, she became very sad. Who would take advantage of a widow?. So she decided to place a trap for the intruder. She took a statue of wood, placed glue all over and placed it in the middle of the field.

Night came, Anas woke up. Again he was ready for his meal, when he saw a stranger in the field. He got angry, and jumped on the intruder, but he remained glued with all his eight feet, so he could not move. He realized that was a trap from his wife.

The next morning the poor widow find the husband glued to the statue, and realized that he was not dead.

Anas confessed what he had done.

    How could you do this?

They all thought you were dead. Now our family has been shamed and we will have to hide in the darkest corner so we do not have to show to the world the shame that you have brought us.

For this reason even today the spiders hide in very dark corners.

All the men came armed and started looking for the lion, the women and children locked themselves in the house because they were afraid. Kab was very happy because of his trick and happy how his parents had believed him after he told them when they came back from the fields.

That evening, while the boy was telling one more time his story to his poor mother, she kept crying being so happy that her son was alive, the village chief appeared.
