Author

Dr. Andrea Green-Gibson

Born and raised in Chicago, I have to admit that I am proud to be a product of the Chicago Public School (CPS) system. I would not be the woman I am today if not for the experiences – not all good – that came out of CPS. My name is Dr. Andrea Green-Gibson. I am a mother, a wife, a published author, and a leader in my community and the field of education. My goal is to help improve the quality of education for students who are not meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and help educators infuse effective programs in curricula.

    Dedication

I dedicate this book to all Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students and educators as well as all parents/guardians of students who attend CPS. A plethora of our nation’s youth particularly, female-youth and their parents/guardians and teachers work extremely hard to reach set goals and achieve academic success. Often times, ineffective circumstances affect the academic success rates producing undesirable outcomes for each group involved in the learning and schooling processes. This book is dedicated to the leaders and those whom wield the power to make meaningful yet, effective change to the field of education, particularly, public education for African-American, female students.

The system of culture teaches the people to recognize phenomenon and to respect certain logical relations amongst phenomena. Culture gives meaning to reality. As such, culture has the power to compel behavior and the capacity to reinforce ideas and beliefs about human functioning, including issues of educational achievement and motivation. As such, culture is the invisible medium in which all human functioning occurs. It is important to note, in fact, that nothing human happens outside of culture. To think of culture as the
