About this ebook
Absolute Fate was written to help those who are suffering from the evils of drugs abuse and bullying. This book also substantiates the fact that, perseverance is the main catalyst to success. I hope that some young people epitomize the main character in this story and bring some success story to their lives. I know the struggles and oppositions many of our young people face, because, I was once there.
We are living in a society where people are destroying themselves with drugs. Despite efforts made by the government and other social groups to combat the problem, it remains a revolving door. The health care system is now in disarray financially, because drug users are predisposed to various health problems. Bullying is another social problem world-wide. This is one of the worst injustices inflicted on a human-being. God made this earth for all to enjoy, yet some feel that the road to their happiness is incumbent on others pain. In my book Absolute Fate, I depicted the life of a young man who went from strength to strength to accomplish what he thought was right. Despite his efforts, he was bullied, dehumanized and literally thrown in a dismal place, only to be rescued by the help of kind people. He finally made it to the end.
I hope the information in this book will help bullies and those who are being bullied to see life in a different perspective. I also hope it discourages the use of street drugs, because it has serious implications. Not only does drug use separates one from society, but family also.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The story is very similar to Manon Lescaut which is referenced a couple of times. But contrary to that tale, the characters are real, their behavior plausible and the story grips your emotion. The reader for this French edition does a superb job and had me crying during the final stages of the book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A quick read. While it's charming enough, it didn't leave too much of an impression on me afterwards. I read "Camille" because I heard it was the basis for Verdi's opera "La Traviata." I must say it makes a better opera. That said, if you have a free afternoon, it's enjoyable.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Almost a guilty pleasure. Dumas' novel is smutty and noble, trashy and sentimental, tragic and overwrought. Nineteenth century chick lit - I enjoyed it! I suspect it would make a good weepie - I need to check out La Traviata...
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I adore complicated, tortured stories of difficult love affairs if they don't descend into the sacarine or trite. Dumas fils does not disappoint with this fictionalized account of his own fractured love affair. Nothing burns quit so much as the passions that pain us in our youth. Although it's going on nearly 200 years old it wears well and has been mined for inspiration for books stage and film by lesser writers since. Sniff a camellia and heave a sad sigh for lost love.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I purchased this from the library book sale. I had not heard of this story and missed the author connection - his father wrote Count of Monte Christo and the Three Musketeers. This is a great story of love, redemption, jealousy, and societal judgment. The ending is not happy, but the story worth reading. I'd have loved to sit down and have a drink and coversation with Dumas.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Perfect to read in bed when fighting a cold. Who needs Harlequin romances when Alexdanre Dumas fils is writing.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I read the Le Livre de Poche (French) 1966 edition of this book, not the one indicated. Although intended as a Catholic morality tale, it's well-written & fun to read (of course, it's tragic). Jettisoning the "save one's immortal soul" reading prompt and replacing it with socio-economic & feminist critique makes for a more illuminating reading experience. Good detailed depiction of the catch-22 circumstances of a 19th century "kept woman" and her "respectable" lover.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Melodramatic and with characters that aren’t all that likeable, but yet somehow an enjoyable read, perhaps because of the depth of the emotions, and how the book transports you to early 19th century France. Marguerite is a ‘kept woman’, one who trades her sexual favors to aristocratic old men for their money and lavish gifts. She keeps up an extravagant lifestyle while juggling suitors, which she can do without offending those involved too much as long as she maintains a sense of decorum about it. Armand is a young bourgeoisie who falls madly in love with her, and despite not having the economic means to pay her expenses, gets petty and jealous of her other men and tries to take her from it all, to the alarm of his father. The book is restrained and doesn’t give us detail for the amorous relations, and yet it’s refreshingly frank about them, both of which were good things. While it’s a completely different world that these characters inhabit, when they go through the ups and downs of their affair, we recognize emotions and actions that are timeless. It drags on a bit towards the end, but the story of sacrifice and love is touching.Quotes:On affairs, this from Marguerite:“Men, instead of being satisfied in obtaining for a long time what they scarcely hoped to obtain once, exact from their mistresses a full account of the present, the past, and even the future. As they get accustomed to her, they want to rule her, and the more one gives them the more exacting they become. If I decide now on taking a new lover, he must have three very rare qualities: he must be confiding, submissive, and discreet.”On chance:“One day a young man is passing in the street, he brushes against a woman, looks at her, turns, goes on his way. He does not know the woman, and she has pleasures, griefs, loves, in which he has no part. He does not exist for her, and perhaps, if he spoke to her, she would only laugh at him, as Marguerite had laughed at me. Weeks, months, years pass, and all at once, when they have each followed their fate along a different path the logic of chance brings them face to face. The woman becomes the man’s mistress and loves him. How? Why? Their two existences are henceforth one; they have scarcely begun to know one another when it seems as if they had known one another always, and all that had gone before is wiped out from the memory of the two lovers. It is curious, one must admit.”

Chapter 1
THE VISION
Insomnia was the son of William Binai, a local farmer of Port Point in southern St Claire. The family lived at the pastoral residence as they could not afford to pay rent from the small salary earned by the mother; in doing domestic work for the reverend and his wife. Sometimes the young boy would help with the chores assigned to the mother, but Mrs. Binai did not approve of this; deep in her heart, she hated the job and prayed that none of her children experience the life she lived.
Insomnia was a special child. None of the other children had the wisdom and intelligence he possessed. He was admired deeply, especially by those who love young people and those who were excited when they excel in life. There was jealousy toward him, among underachievers similar to his age. The parents were aware of this, and so Insomnia’s mom kept him close to her. She took him to work when school was not in session to ensure his safety. Mr. Binai, the proud father, cherished the thought that one day, Insomnia would be great and will uplift the family to a better standard of living.
Pastor Zumbia was very impressed with the boy’s intelligence and started a program to help finance education for underprivileged children in the church. It was his intention to manipulate the system so that Insomnia would be a beneficiary from the fund. Most parents participated freely, with great expectations that their children would be the lucky recipient of that scholarship. Interestingly, pastor Zumbia also contributed, despite he had no heir.
Insomnia was six years old when the church decided to select an individual who would attend kindergarten with the money collected. All the names of the gifted children whose family attended the church were submitted except Insomnia because the family had not contributed. However, the pastor had already decided that money would go for Insomnia’s education.
There was a fierce debate in the church on the allocation of this award. Little did they know that the prize was not based on raffling; but on the ability to do a simple intelligence test. The person with the highest score would get the prize. There was no one in that church family who could outsmart little Insomnia and the church community was cognizant of this fact.
On hearing the tasks to be performed for the awards, Barney, a member on the Church Board, became despondent, fainted, suffered a massive heart attack, and went into a coma. He thought his son would be the recipient. Being a wealthy man in the church, he allocated funds to the members of the church for their votes. Barney was sure things would work in his favor. Most of the church folks thought Barney’s condition was a hoax and assumed he would recuperate expeditiously.
They kept vigil at his bedside daily alternating their time spent—praying, chanting, and hoping for the best. They knew he would compensate them immensely if they could convince him that their prayers and support were the catalyst to his recuperation. However, the more they waited, the deeper Barney went in coma, and the prognosis became grave.
The medical doctors did all they could to help Barney. The best Neurologist that was available was consulted to help restore Barney’s health. Barney was very prominent in the church and business community, and it was important that he regained consciousness. Various people were invited to arouse Barney. There was no exception—anyone with a witty idea was included. The offer to arouse Barney was enormous, and everyone was willing to participate.
The local bush doctor, priest and psychic, were brought into the spotlight, but his condition deteriorated daily. All types of medication were suggested, which included lime juice, vinegar, and rum. They felt that these alone would release a pungent aroma that was enough to stimulate the senses and revive Barney to consciousness.
People came from far and near, each bringing his own cultural medication to awake Barney. The more they tried, the worse he became. The sentiment was so strong to arouse Barney that the entire village experimented on him. This was aired on every TV station around the world, and there was an offer to provide free airfare and hotel room to anyone who was interested.
Everyone was welcomed to send his/her resume for review, and accolades were coming from various parts of the world. The mail was just pouring in such that the family of Barney had to appoint a secretary to manage the avalanche of mails. Everyone had a success story, which made the screening process more difficult. Madam Sushi from Africa explained how she aroused seven dead people back to life, and that they were all living proof. She was willing to take them along as exhibits, but she only wanted to secure a safe haven for her children in the country. To capitalize on the opportunity, arrangement was made with family members to conceal them as soon as they were presented as exhibits.
Cooley Boy from the island was the first one to arrive with his bottle of white rum, lime-water, and vinegar. He felt it was a demonic spirit attacking Barney and providing this spirit with the right food would enable it to lose Barney. He spent a whole month at Barney’s bedside, but was unsuccessful. It was discovered that Cooley Boy was selling the rum provided by the family of Barney and sending the money by Zoom It
back home to recruit more of his family members as well as enlarging his bank account. The attempt to cure Barney was fruitless, so the church and family eventually succumb to failure. They decided to launch out the project by selecting the most viable person for this treasured prize.
This created a catastrophe in the life of the church. As the test papers were being distributed to the children, there walked in Insomnia whose parents didn’t and couldn’t contribute to the fund. He was blatantly asked to vacate the building. They knew he would achieve the highest score. Immediately, the pastor stood up and boldly declared that his involvement in the fund secured Insomnia’s eligibility to take the test. He boldly added that he adopted Insomnia, but allowed the parents to raise him.
The situation got out of control. The members were throwing bottles and stones at the pastor that he had to seek shelter in the vestry.
Bajan the secretary, stormed out of the building cursing the pastor and decided to get even with him by depriving him of a few weeks offerings and tithes. He did not know the best way to deliver the blow, yet, The job must be done. Pastor needs some discipline,
he concluded. Bajan walked around the blocks for four hours, planning his revenge. He thought of burning down the church, but that was dangerous—too much money was invested in it by the community, and the whole community would be upset with him. He even thought of setting fire to the pastor’s house but that was another dangerous act.
After a few days of pondering, he realized that he made a mistake by disclosing to pastor his plan to revenge and so apologized to him. Deep down in his heart, it was just an affront to set the pastor’s mind at ease with him. However, Bajan thought he must do something vicious, and the sooner he did it, the better. There was no time for delay—the pastor must be disciplined!
After long and thoughtful consideration, he came up with the most disgusting revenge that startled the entire community. He concluded on using the pendulum of the church’s bell as the answer. The church had a large bell that automatically rang every Sunday morning at seven o’ clock to alert members to get ready for church. Bajan decided to wake up early Sunday morning and remove the pendulum. Eventually, no bell would ring and no one would attend church.
Saturday night Bajan was restless. He couldn’t sleep because he didn’t want to oversleep and lose the battle with the pastor. His wife noticed his restlessness during the night and decided that Bajan needed an intestinal cleansing. She prepared some Senna and gave it to Bajan in apple juice to make it more pleasant to the taste. She was sure the diarrhea would be helpful to rid Bajan of the toxins in his body. It was 3:00 A.M. and time for Bajan to make a move with his trick not knowing that he drank Senna, a medicine that takes two hours to work.
In the morning, he left home with his ladder to do his disgusting scheme. As he climbed up stealthily toward the bell, the higher he went, the greater the urge to defecate. The urge was so strong and persistent that he could not make it back to the ground, so he evacuated all the fecal contents from the ladder causing it to spray all around.
A stranger passing through the district, seeing the strange figure on the ladder, was scared beyond belief. He swore it was a ghost. He ran as fast as lightning, but feeling the feces on his body made him consider it rather strange because spirit does not defecate, he agreed. He looked keenly, shaking vigorously, and beheld this strange, short man descending from the ladder with an object in his hand.
Bajan never knew that a stranger passed by and observed him climbing on a ladder in the early morning. He descended with the pendulum, picked up the ladder, and went home innocently.
That Sunday morning, only pastor and his family showed up for church. Everyone was waiting to hear the sound of the bell—and not hearing it, encouraged them to stay in bed longer until it was passed church time.
Pastor and his family thought it was the consensus of the members to absent from church, or that some contagious disease in the air affected all his members. He made a visit to one of the members to inquire his suspicion. He was devastated to learn that they were all waiting for the ringing of the bell. Incidentally, something prompted him that he did not hear the bell also. He leisurely walked toward the church to investigate the matter and had the greatest surprise of his life. Not only was the pendulum missing, but the ground was sprayed with human feces. He thought of many ways to identify the individual. He wondered if DNA could be traced in feces, and who would have had their DNA tested to prove the point? So he dismissed the thought and came to the conclusion to have it replaced.
This pendulum cost a fortune and was difficult to replace, so the community bonded together to retrieve it, regardless of the cost. A large sum of money was offered for information that would lead to the capture of the individual. An offer that could not be ignored by anyone, not even the guilty culprit, Bajan—the most likely one who should stay away. Everyone in the district bonded to find the guilty person. But the longer it took, the more money was offered. The School Board was also concerned because the bell served the school community as well. Children needed to know the time to get ready for school.
Everyone noticed that Bajan was the only person with a nonchalant attitude toward finding the pendulum of the bell. He became very agitated when this topic was discussed, and made efforts to avoid conversation involving the bell. Bajan became arrogant as they zeroed in on possible suspects, and included him among the suspects. He then decided to participate in the search. It wasn’t long after initiating the search, he made a big alarm that surprised the team. The pendulum was found, and delivered to the church by Bajan.
As soon as the news reached the community, the people assembled to show appreciation to the finder and watch him receive the acclaimed sum of money. The stranger who passed by early that Sunday morning and observed the short man on the ladder also attended the ceremony.
As Bajan accepted the award, the stranger shouted, He is the culprit. I saw him on the ladder Sunday morning.
The crowd was stunned, yet they believed the stranger. Bajan
