    Dedication

To Lisa: I couldn’t have failed without you letting me. I couldn’t have learned without you letting me fail. I couldn’t have succeeded as a businessman without learning from my many failures. You have graciously allowed me to take Spirit lead risk, which now I know, sometimes wasn’t lead at by Him! Furthermore, you have always allowed me to work hard and long if necessary, while keeping me balanced and grounded. Thank you, my love!

To Joshua, Jessica, and Jaime: You have always allowed Daddy the freedom to work hard for God and for others. I hope I have always modeled balance between work, family, and God. I pray that even my failures have helped you! I love you all more than you could ever imagine!

To Louis Charles Brown: Daddy, you were from the old school. I watched you—prior to the luxury of power tools—sweat in the Southern California heat to show me how to labor and to care for a man’s home and all who was dear to him. You modeled before me that rising early was a good thing for a man to do. And just for the record, I still naturally get up early because of you. Thank you!

    Foreword

There are few people in this world that I respect more than Cedrick Brown, and I feel privileged that he has asked me to write the foreword to his book, My Daily Business. With a career that has included both participation in professional sports and management in the corporate world together with his present ministry as a pastor, Cedrick has a unique ability to speak into men’s lives.

The businessmen and professionals I work with have always been inspired by him when we have utilized him as a speaker in retreats, conferences, and workshop settings.

I have also watched the high regard in which he is held by other pastors in a group where Cedrick and I fellowship together. On a personal level, he has been a constant source of encouragement to me in my ministry, and I am blessed to call him a friend and brother in Christ.

What makes Cedrick so effective is his commitment to the truth of Scripture, his dependency on God in prayer, and his sensitivity to the leading of the Spirit. These qualities are reflected in the book you hold in your hand. The Daily Nuggets are vintage Cedrick—taking the wisdom of the Bible and putting it in language that the average man living in today’s world can relate to and use every day.

The preparation and application exercises also reflect his natural tendency toward the practical. James 1:22 (NIV) says, Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. That the word needs to be lived and not just thought about is Cedrick’s deep conviction (and mine). This book will help you, the reader, do exactly that. I highly recommend that you read it and do the exercises. But be careful—it just might change your way of living. I pray that it will.

    Introduction

As a businessperson, I’m sure you have encountered situations that you’ve hoped for a user’s manual of some kind. A handbook that would answer those plaguing questions such as:

    What do I do?

    How do I correct this?

    How should I respond?

    What will happen if I . . . ?

    Who will this affect?

How would this make me look?

How will this affect the organization?

How much will this cost me?

Should I keep him or let him go?

What would this do to my career?

Question after question stirs within the mind of every businessperson, each one possessing the potential to sear the most well-meaning conscience. Thus a simple tool is needed to help you navigate through those difficult decisions. Those required moves that could affect the outcome of not only yours or someone else’s career, but the lives of entire families—we’re talking generations.

My attempt with this book is to place myself in your shoes—the businessperson. Reminding myself of what I was feeling and thinking during those multimillion-dollar transactions that could have turned the direction of my entire year or career around with one new customer, one new project, through one agonizing decision. What did I draw from when I made the wrong decision that could have cost me my job? What did I turn to if I needed a breath of life in my day, year, or career? What source of wisdom could I, did I reach for when there was nowhere else to turn? My desire with this book is to help you with what helped me—wisdom for day-to-day living. Did you know that there are thirty-one chapters nestled within the book of Proverbs—one for each day of the month? In this book, My Daily Business, I’ve attempted to take each chapter of Proverbs and adapt it in such a way that it can be seen, understood, and applied in the daily life of a businessperson like you. In addition, within each day you will find the Getting Ready and Getting Results sections, which are designed to help motivate you to apply your "Daily
