FOREWORD
It is with a profound and deep sense of understanding of the Divine Grace’s blessing of this work that I am penning these words as a foreword to this book written by Saraswati Raman. I remember my husband, Dr.Arun Apte’s first introduction of Saraswati to me when he showed me the e-mail she had written, describing beautifully the sublime effect his music had on her and how it had cured her of the unique problem she had of waking up at one- thirty every night for sixteen years. It was so touching that my eyes swelled with tears. She was one of his students at the music class that he conducted at Parag Raje’s house in Thane, when he used to drive all the way from Pune every week-end and on some occasions, I too, had the privilege of being present with all those devoted students. I was so surprised that Music Therapy could do such magic on people that in spite of my initial apprehensions, I began to be convinced of its efficacy.
Although he had a background in music, having come from a family of musicians; where his mother was a student of Pandit Paluskar and he himself having been trained under Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, his obsession for doing research in music and the relations of music and the
Kundalini and Chakras began after a performance in 1993 as a guest artist at Cabella on the occasion of puja of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi. We had been invited to perform before Her Holiness, and the vibrations during the performance were tremendous. After the program, many Sahaja Yogis who were listening to him came back to him and said that their Kundalinis were dancing as he sang. That performance was the turning point when Arun just plunged into the world of music and never looked back after that.
His approach to application of music centered around observing and contemplation on the effect of Swaras on each chakra. We used to have several Sahaja Yogis coming to our house and experimenting and discussing on the effects of notes on the Chakras. After Realization from Her Holiness Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, his depth in music intensified and his creative energies manifested in the form of music bandishes (compositions), all of which started coming to him naturally and automatically. Even though he was involved with all of us externally, like driving his scooter or watching movies on the TV with us, his attention was on the movement of Kundalini within him and the effect of external sounds on his Kundalini energy as She meandered within his subtle system.
My musical journey attained some stature under his nurturing care and tutelage. Although I was already a radio artist in Goa; after marriage, it was under Arun’s training in riaz of the sur, pronunciations, taranas, etc. that it grew. He was my husband, guru and best friend all rolled in one. My whole world was centered on him, but his journey in this life with me was shortened and perhaps that was Divinely ordained.
In the last couple of years, somehow, he seemed to have fast tracked his work on this Earth, and he did several CDs consisting of Bija mantras, Bija Aksharas, Om therapy, chanting of shlokas on the deities of each chakra, and Music Therapy.
Saraswati has captured in this book some of the subtle discoveries that he had made in the use of swara phrases composed
