Having been a music, art, library, literacy, specialty teacher, I had the unique privilege of getting to meet all the students in the many schools where I taught.

Thank you to the children who confided their feelings and sought my counsel on their issues and problems.

Those students were the inspiration for my TOO series of books about social-skill, problem solving.

    BE PREPARED

Oh great! Isn’t it just like my parents to make a life changing decision for me without even asking how I feel about it?

We’re so proud of you, Claire, mom and my dad exclaimed as I just got home from my last day of grade five before summer holidays.

"Your teacher and the principal informed us, that to pass you into grade six was just a waste of time. You were the only fifth grade student to complete the grade six curriculum. We’re so happy now that we let you be in a grade five-six split.

Your teacher wants to accelerate you to junior high and we agreed. Isn’t that marvelous?"

Marvelous, ha! What’s so great about skipping a grade? I felt betrayed.

It’ll be perfect, my parents stated happily, as if they’d just been awarded a trophy or something. It’ll be a piece of cake for you. You’re smart enough, as tall as most middle-school kids and Justine will help you fit right in. In fact, she can be your role model.

They just don’t get it, I thought. Sure my older sister, Justine, is great, even if she is my stepsister.

Everyone LOVES Justine - the boys, the girls, the teachers, the principal, everyone. Even the kids from other schools, who play inter-school sports LOVE Justine. It’s nauseating. It’s like she’s a teen idol or something.

What’s worse than that; Justine and I are not alike at all. Okay, we’re both girls, but that’s where the similarity ends. So how can she be my role model? She’s the right height
