This book spells out my theory about the parallels among

    Blood/Personality Types and Fragrance Families.

This is not a proven study, however; while working as a Fragrance Salesperson I discovered that there is definitely a correlation.

When either the blood or personality is determined then finding perfect fragrances becomes a much easier search.

    DEDICATION

    Dedicated with heartfelt appreciation

to all of my friends, family and co-workers

who believed in me and my theory.

    PROLOGUE

    The Fragranista Begins

H ello  . . . and thanx for your interest in Scent-Sational Searches.

I suppose my journey began when I was a mere child. I would always notice a wonderful distinctive difference about my Daddy when he put on smell good, as he referred to his Old Spice cologne. My mother wore her Estee (Lauder) for as long as I can remember. Her mother would sparingly dab on a bit of lavender for special occasions. These scents all evoke happy memories of family and I’m sure they are the basis of my love for perfume.

My true passion began to unfold back in 2007 when I took a part-time job with Belk in Savannah, GA as a fragrance sales rep. My adventure into the world of perfume definitely helped develope me into what I jokingly refer to today as a Fragranista!

Soon after I began my job I noticed a parallel among certain people and their fragrance choices. I was totally in the dark about the commonalities of who liked and bought what, however; my job description directed me to assist people with their fragrance selections.

    Inquiring Mind

I often wondered why certain women would fall into a fragrance card or mist into the air and vocalize their delight with ‘ahs.’ While, on the other hand, others would wrinkle their nose, frown, turn away from the aroma and literally groan, ‘Eeeww! No! Not me . . .’

This inquiring mind also wanted to know ‘Why?’ the same perfume would seem to smell quite different on some people. So I began a search to discover more and more about fragrance notes and their families. I learned how to describe perfume to my customers as if the beautifully bottled concoctions were fine wines from which they could choose a favorite!

After a while I realized that I was definitely on to something big! And, so my curiosity began to . . . beautifully ‘blossom’. As did my joy and exhilaration for this quest for more knowledge!

    Observations

While searching for answers I checked to see what Stanford University studies may have been published. I discovered an Introduction about Ethnicity and Human Genetic Linkage Maps. I learned that we are all born with genetic markers determined by our blood types. These genetic linkage maps determine our physical traits.

While working in Savannah, my first observations indicated that many women of color (predominantly O blood types) seemed to love the traditional heavier scents of flowers with woodsy and or spicy notes. Japanese art students (predominantly A blood types) favored brighter mixed bouquets of fruity florals.

Other distinctive pieces of this puzzle were the obviously outdoorsy or athletic

people who came into the store wearing their gym clothes, golf or tennis attire. This group went for the more modern crisp green notes of citrus and cedars.

The fourth group I profiled as more quiet or sensitive. They might be a bit standoffish or indecisive and proved to be very difficult to help. They navigated toward a slim fragrance line of soft clean smells that often dry down to a delicate powdery scent.

    Patterns Begin

Definite patterns began to materialize as I helped women (and men) search for the perfect perfumes that satisfied their senses. Their choices seemed to fall into categories that reflected an obvious personality or presumed blood type (the thing people kept referring to as body chemistry).

Years ago I suffered a serious lung disorder. During my illness one of physicians

from the Atlanta Center for Disease Control (CDC) turned me on to the book EAT RIGHT 4 YOUR TYPE. This book by Dr. Peter D’Adamo is about how to eat based on your blood type. It has become an international bestseller.

‘Dr. D’Adamo’s ground breaking medical and genetic research reveals that blood type is the key to your biochemical uniqueness. When you eat right for your type, your body responds the way nature intended.

‘With more than 4 million copies in print, translated into and voted one of the "Ten Most Influential Health Books of All Time, EAT RIGHT FOR YOUR TYPE has made a lasting mark in the field of diet and nutrition, with a simple, effective formula: 4 blood types; 4 individual diet plans.

Blood Type O thrives on a lean, high protein diet.

Blood Type A thrives on a primarily vegetarian diet.

Blood Type B thrives on a mixed diet of meat, fish and dairy.

Blood Type AB thrives on a modified vegetarian diet.

EAT RIGHT 4 YOUR TYPE has won praise from leaders in nutritional and genetic science, as well as popular celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez, Cheryl Tiegs, Hugh Grant, Elizabeth Hurley and Ellen DeGeneres. Millions of followers confirm the reason for its success: It works! (1)

    Blood Studies

My life’s experience in the medical arena had taught me that a person’s body chemistry definitely determined the effect of certain foods AND drugs that were ingested . . . some good and others not so much.

I decided that the same must surely be true about the fragrances used. It’s another facet of chemistry! Hmmm . . . So! I decided to learn more about how our bodies respond to what we spray and rub into it and what (if any) correlation to blood types.

My studies showed that the O’s is both the largest and original blood type, over 44% in the USA. Secondly was the A family which makes up about 42% of the blood population in this country. These people were meat eating ‘Warriors’ and ‘Hunters’.

After man became ‘Farmers’ the next two blood types evolved. The B group came next and represents less than 12% of blood population. It was followed by the AB’s at about 2%. The AB’s evolved only about 500 years ago after man added dairy to his diet. This group has many sensitivities and is more prone to illness. (2)

    Personality Parallels

I began to truly believe that individual body chemistry (blood type) and personality type did in fact have correlated factors that absolutely influenced fragrance

choices. So next, I began a search to confirm my theory about such parallels.

My research led to Japanese studies that began back in the 1920s to determine which blood type would produce the best soldiers. Not surprising, a parallel between blood types and personality types was indicated.

It pointed to the B’s as best soldiers. Their personality can be aggressive and competitive. I have also noticed that these folks play to win . . . second place just does not count! Also-the O’s made the best officers. They are natural leaders with strong, decisive opinions.

That research died down in the 1940s but was revitalized in the 70’s. Today this belief is a huge part of the Japanese culture. (Read more about this in Chapter 3.)

    Game On

My passion to prove my Fragranista Theory led me to develop my own simple guessing game. I’d invite customers to ‘spray and play’ . . . (my game). If they had no clue about blood type we’d talk about personalities to help determine a probable fragrance family choice and guide them in that direction . . . instead of walking around the fragrance counters and trying bottle after bottle with hopes of finding something they liked.

My decisions about which fragrances seemed to work best for specific blood and personality types (B/PTs) began to come into focus. So, next I developed a brief survey that tied the two together. It was used as a tool to confirm my beliefs about the B/PTs and fragrance choices.

The surveys landed between 80-90% accuracy and provided great documentation for my fragrance theory. Of course, there were always non-typical responses but my work became much easier and sales soared!

I advised customers to never buy a fragrance unless "you absolutely love it! . . . Don’t wear it because it smells good on a friend or relative . . . Chances are it could smell totally different on you. And why is this? . . . because of your body chemistry (or blood type)," I’d respond. So it was
