About this ebook

Many people know the name Ned Kelly but don't know the story that led to his last stand at Glenrowan or his execution at the Old Melbourne Gaol. The author has attempted to retell the story by simply connecting the events of the day with images of places and items that still exist today. The book begins with the marriage of Ned Kellys parents in 1850 and ends with Neds execution in 1880. In between are all the significant events of his life, including the police murders, the audacious robberies, and Neds vision for a republic of North-Eastern Victoria. It is the ideal book for anyone who has an interest in Australian history or who wants to know more about Ned Kellys significance to Australia.

    PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

There have been a number of events and people in my life that has led to An Introduction to Ned Kelly. It was as a young boy that I read my father’s favorite book Ned Kelly by Frank Clune. And with that began an amazing journey into another place and time in Australian history. During my teenage years I spent many a day at the Old Melbourne Gaol trying to imagine the cruelty and misery of such a place. In my mid-twenties I realized that many of the places associated with the Kelly Gang still existed and thus began the numerous road trips throughout North-East Victoria [Kelly Country] and New South Wales. It wasn’t until reading Ned Kelly A Short Life by Ian Jones that I began to take my interest in the Kelly Outbreak to another level. It was on one particular road trip with my brother that we met Pat Doyle, a Beechworth historian whose knowledge of the Kelly Gang, Beechworth and the Woolshed Valley was invaluable and certainly inspired me to explore much more of the countryside in which the Kelly Gang roamed. Now in my mid-fifties I want to share my interpretation of the Kelly Outbreak through a collection of photographs and stories associated with them. I credit this book to the expertise and advice of certain people in their relevant fields. With this in mind I would like to thank Pat Doyle of Historic Beechworth Tours, Rod and Chris Gerrett of Kate’s Cottage. Glenrowan, Janice Van De Velde of the State Library of Victoria, Cherry Noel of Xlibris Publishing and the National Trust of Victoria. Finally this book could not have been achieved without the support of my father and mother [George and Patricia], my brothers Gavan and Jeffrey, my sister Karen, my wife Colleen and daughter Jade.
