    Introduction

T his is a true story, but the names were changed. This story was written, long time ago, in a mind of a child name Kenny. He kept it stored away in his mind for the right time. It started in the year of 1959, when a boy named Kenny was born. He had a mother and a father, two older brothers and three older sisters. His family member’s names from oldest to youngest.

Their names were Mark, and Henrey. Then there was Karla, she was the second child. Then there was Ann, she was the third child. Then there was Swiff, he was the fourth child. Then there was Loretta, she was the fifth child.

Then there was Kenny, he was the sixth child. The rest of my brothers came after.

Then there was Ben, he was a seventh child. Then there was Luke, he was the eighth child. Then there was Pete, he was the ninth child. Then there was Lamount, he was the tenth child.

All the family in order from oldest to youngest.

Henrey and Karla, and Ann, was a year apart from each other. Then two years before Swiff, Loretta, Kenny, Ben, and Luke, all a year apart from each other. Then three years apart came Pete and Lamount, they were a year apart from each other.

All 10 children, was born within 15 years total. Their personalities, was as follows. Henrey was very angry, jealous and bitter. Karla, was hurt and disgusted. Ann, was happy, in a little fresh.

Swiff, was very smart, and fragile. Loretta, was very shy, and a loner. Kenny, was strong, and outgoing. Ben, was angry, and mischievous. Luke, was happy, and a clown. Pete, was very timid, and weak, and smart. Lamount, grew to be gifted in sports.

This story is a true story, but most of the names have been changed. This story was written as Kenny seen it as a child, with his eyes He was born in a time, when segregation wars, was happening, all across the continent. In most of the major cities, it was very hard time in the ghetto where he lived. Most of the fathers that lived around the ghetto. They were all alcoholics, gamblers. Even though, they were married, they live with their spouse, but they spent mostly a time, on a street corner. And the pool halls, card games houses, they played games like poker blackjack, canasta, peinacoll.

There were after hours, and apartments, that was set up for card games, there were barriers in housing, between the Caucasian area, and black area. The Spanish also lived in the ghettos. At that time it was nice to live there.

Most of the people, stuck together, In order to stand, against the attacks from the White police. Riot squads that was happening all across the nation. It was a time when Martin Luther King, was marching in many parades, and speaking. It was a time when Kennedy, also running for presidency. They were speaking up for civil rights, for all people regardless of race.

It was a time when Nixon was coming to the White House. Most of all, the racial rights and birth of rubber bullets. Also witnessing fire department, and Police Department, working together in the riots. They were told, to shoot at anyone, or, anything, that was seen, after dark, on the streets.

    Story Begins

K enny was about four years old. He used to sleep in the bed with his brother Ben and Luke.

Ben used to pee in the bed all the time and Ben slept right besides Kenny and Luke was on the other side of Ben.

Every time Ben peed in the bed, the pee leaked over on Kenny. This made him very upset, he will take Ben and pick him up and throw him across the room.

They will begin to cry and wake mommy up; she will come into the room and beat Kenny. This will be going on for about a month.

Then Kenny woke up one night from pee being sprinkled on him. He looked up and saw it was Luke.

Luke was peeing over top of Ben, and onto him. This time Kenny got up and threw Ben and Luke, across the room onto the floor.

Mommy came rushing into the room, especially now that Luke and Ben are crying. Mommy came straight to Kenny, after picking up then and Luke.

Mommy started beating Kenny, and then she brought Kenny to her room. Mommy had a crib set up for her next baby.

Mommy put Kenny into that crib and told him to keep his mouth shut and go to bed.

Daddy asked mommy are you sure you want to put him in here with us. Kenny’s mommy say he’s asleep now, he won’t see anything.

Later on that week mommy and daddy was in the bed having sex. At first Kenny was sleeping but when he heard them he slowly got up and begins watching them.

The more Kenny watches them he began to copy daddy, and starts slamming his waistline, copying daddy.

Kenny even kept up with daddy rhythm. Kenny was bagging the rails of the crib with his body copying his father.

As soon as mommy and daddy stop, to see what the background noise was, Kenny was stop and lay down and pretend he was asleep.

This went on all week. One time they stop and got up and walked over to Kenny in the crib. They’ve got real close to him looking to see it Kenny was awake, but they cannot tell it Kenny was awake.

The next week came, and again they was making love to each other, and again Kenny begun to copy his father again.

This time daddy got up and said oh no, that boy have to get out of here.

Mommy took Kenny back into the room with his brothers, and told him he better not throw his brothers, or hurt them in any way

We was all balled up in the corner at night Together just listening to the riots going on.

At all the shooting that was going on back and forth.

Small explosions we heard from the cocktail bombs that were being thrown.

You could see from a distance, the shining of the lights. From the flames flickering off the glass, in the windows.

All we heard was running and yelling. This went on for some time throughout the night.

As the sun begin to rise, across the setting. Somehow you heard the statistics came about in the morning, who got killed.

For hours, you heard no one on the streets after the fighting cease.

Most people went to rest quickly, for they didn’t know, how fast it will start up again.

After maybe five hours, then you will see, people showing up, little by little, on the streets. Coming to access the damage and loss.

First thing, as they showed up trying to find out. If everyone is here, and exactly. Who did they lose in the fight?

It was no doubt, there always, was a loss. Many times, the police will be cutting someone down, hanging from the lamp posts on Sunday.

Always showing an example of their authority. It was like a trademark; they always, hang someone on a Saturday night.

Therefore, all the spiritual, black people, and Hispanics. Will see. Someone hanging on their spiritual day Sunday. And also against, their God.

Segregation was at its purest form.

Most black folks lived in the projects, they always moved in packs. Always, going with a group if for nothing else. At least you have witnesses, or someone, to send back the news.

One thing, that was for sure. There was unity in the ghettos. All across the country. For they had no other choice, but to stick together. All they will all lose their fight or their life.

We was able, to move about, the projects, without anyone bothering you accept the white police.

Frosty snowman, ice cream truck. Was the hangout place.

It set right by the basketball court, as he sold ice cream, all anything, you wanted to buy, including drugs. He had the music playing, almost all night except, when there was fighting.

People used to sit out there all night long, jamming to his music. Very little bickering, was going on. It was nice, for some strange reason. There was peace among each other in the projects.

The riots, that was going on. It brought great peace in the hoods, across this great land, with the poor people. There was very little fighting among each other, in the projects.

This story is about a boy name Kenny. His life, his struggles and achievements. Regardless of the seemingly never ending battles and attacks, he had to face, on just an ordinary day. All by himself.

Overcoming, battles after battles, facing them on, a domestic scale, a political scale, a psychological scale.

His abilities to adapt through incredible odds.

The state, in which this story takes place, is New Haven, Connecticut.

The streets most of the story takes place. On Ashum Street, Canal Street, Foot Street, Webster Street, Henry Street, Munson Street, Golf St., Orchard Street, Dixwell Avenue, Shelton Avenue. Whalley Avenue.

Unity among the minorities was very strong at that time. Blacks, had to stick close by one another, in order to survive attacks from the enemy.

There was strong, black unity then Black’s social life is not united, with their spouse. Black family’s domestic life was in full force, alcoholise, and other addictions.

Heroin use was on the rise. There was also morphine.

But alcohol and gambling was the number one thing.

You can see different after hour’s clubs in apartments, that would be ran, as alcohol clubs, poker house.
