Prologue
The Conference Starts
YNancy stood in front of the auditorium door, but she didn’t know if she had the courage to enter. Finally, she opened the door and then closed it automatically. She wondered if she next had the courage and strength to speak before hundreds of people.
Nancy had been invited for a conference organized by a community center in Rosemont. The theme of the conference was loving yourself.
She had participated in other conferences in the past, but none having an audience as large as this.
Nancy finally walked to the front of the auditorium, stood in front of the microphone, and started to speak.
"Hey everyone! My name is Nancy Mahlaba. I am your guest speaker tonight. The organizers of this event asked me to speak to you about a subject that affects everyone living on this earth. There is, indeed, a feeling that everyone wants to feel loved. Human beings want to be loved so much, in fact, that sometimes they allow
themselves to endure the most atrocious abuse.
"I am one of those people who has hunted for love. For years, I tried to be loved by others. I wanted the kind of love that would fill a deep void in my heart. Every time I thought I had found love, however, something happening to remind me that this void was not yet filled.
"As you’ve probably figured out by now, the topic of this conference is the quest for love. Tonight, we will ask ourselves what true love is. I’m not the only person to have looked for it. Indeed, we live in a society that makes us believe that the answer lies in wealth, appearance, and celebrity… yet many people, despite their financial success or beauty, feel lonely and empty.
"We live in a system that somehow creates this isolation. A child grows up without his parents because his parents work all the time. Then the child becomes a young adult who goes off to attend college full-time while working a part-time job. He has no time for himself and no time to develop interpersonal relationships. He moves on to become a young adult who works hard at a career to support his family. In exchange for this, he sees less of his wife and child. This individual then becomes a senior. In his old age, he lives the rest of his days alone in a seniors home.
"I sometimes feel that the cycle of life our society presents to us makes people more unhappy than fulfilled. An accomplished individual is a happy person and at peace with himself. I’m not saying that being rich and beautiful are bad things, but if that’s all love is to you, then you might actually live unhappily for the rest of your life. It took me years to understand this fact… until the day I met with true love."

My Story
YSince apartheid made the situation very unstable in South Africa, a man and woman gave enough money to their son, Martin Mahlaba, so that he could immigrate to Canada.
On December 13, 1965, Martin, a young man of twenty-five years, arrived in the beautiful province of Quebec. He moved in with his aunt. The winter months were difficult for him. Everything was so different, but he would eventually adapt to his new home.
Two months after his arrival, he enrolled at the University of Montreal. He decided to study law. His parents had always said that they would be happy to see their son become a lawyer, so Martin decided to be a great lawyer and make his parents proud.
In September of the following year, he began his classes. Everything was going well for him. He even met a nice Ivorian woman whose name was Aisha Coffi. He loved this girl. They got along very well, and she also wanted to become a lawyer.
One day, Martin went out with his friends. They
