Dr. Antoinette Crawford-Willis acknowledges herself as a child who grew up during the civil rights era. Her story is based on actual experiences by her father who founded the Black Pioneer Firefighters in Memphis, Tennessee from 1955 until his retirement. Antoinette holds a Doctorate in Adult Education, a Master’s in Reading and Literacy and a Master’s Degree in Dance Education. She currently lives and works in a small community outside of Columbus, Mississippi.

    My daddy was one of the first black firefighters on the Memphis Fire Department. I was seven years old when he got the job.

    I am glad he was hired that year in 1957 because he was becoming discouraged and he and momie had talked about moving to another city.
