    CHAPTER 1

O n a cold and early morning. Everything was still dark. Inside a building slept fifty five guys exhausted from the day before. In one room, where the room was dark and quite. Slept a guy. Still in bed waiting for his alarm clock to go off. His room was clean and organized. He was 5’6", sandy brown hair, and built like an athlete. His name was Johnny Oxford.

Soon the alarm clock went off and an arm emerged from the blankets and headed toward the alarm clock. He turned off the clock and sat up in bed. He turned on the lamp sitting on a table stand next to the bed. As he got up, he could hear another alarm clock going off. It was his roommate Darrell Mancini. Oxford got up and went over to his dresser. Open it to reveal nicely folded shirts and shorts. He then open another drawer and pulled out some white socks. As he got dress. He heard his roommate’s music going.

Just like every morning. Oxford said while still waking up. He then walked over to his door. Grab a reflector belt. While putting the belt on, he open the door and walked into the kitchen area. He looked at his roommates door. Which was still shut. Then Oxford went to the bathroom. As the bathroom door shut, Mancini’s door open. Wearing the same outfit as Oxford. Down to the belt. He walked in the kitchen area and was going to make some coffee. He was 5’7" light brown complexion, dark black hair, and husky built. He came from Puerto Rico to join the Army. He had been in for three years and made PFC last month. Oxford had been in for six years and has been a specialists for a year. Waiting to make the next rank.

Mancini then walked over to the bathroom door and knocked.

Are you done? I would like to go and get my business done too. While doing a cross legged bouncing motion.

Just as he finished his sentence, the door open and Oxford came out while Mancini raced in. Oxford walked over and got a little cup of coffee. While drinking some coffee. He got his shoes and waited for Mancini to get ready.

He finished his coffee has Mancini came out and looked at him.

Let me get my shoes and we’ll go. Said Mancini. Getting his shoes.

Soon both guys opened the door and stepped into the hallway. The hallway was packed with people going to PT. Oxford and Mancini walked down the hall and saw Daniel Roberts. Roberts was a 6’1" blonde hair, and muscular built. He turned and saw both guys walking toward him.

Hey guys. Ready go to PT and get our sweat on? As he chuckled a little.

We better head out. We have thirty five minutes to get to formation. Said Mancini.

The guys hurried down the stairs and out the door. When they got out the doors. They saw Jenny Burls. Burls was a Specialist for four years. Standing at 5’7", brunette, and an athlete body. In school was was in track and came in second place. Her father was a police officer who retired two years ago. She has two older brother who became cops. Her dad was hoping she would be one, but military was good to. Her mom had passed away when she was three from cancer.

Hey guys. Going to PT? Mine if I go with you guys? She asked.

The more the merry. Said Mancini.

The four of them race over to where the formation was going to be. As they got there, they had five minutes before formation started.

Did you feel that? Said Roberts looking around.

    What? Asked Burls.

    Like a drop. Said Roberts.

I felt something like that on the way here. Said Mancini.

Soon the drops turned into a light shower.

Lets form it up! Fall in Shouted a Sergeant.

Everyone there scrambled to there position. As the 1SGT. made his way to the front of the formation. As he stood there waiting for the group to settle down. He called them to attention. The group replied back with there motto. Then the medium built guy came to the front of the group. He had to be in his forties with dark brown hair and a thin mustache. Standing about 5’6". His name was Thomas Calvin. He was the 1SGT for Oxford and the rest of the gang. He turned to face the group of soldiers and called for attendance. The three Sergeants in front of the groups turned around and faced the groups. As the Sergeants got attendance, the Commander James Niles walked over to the First Sergeant to talk to him. Then step away before the last Sergeant turned around.

The Sergeants gave their reports to the First Sergeant. Then the First Sergeant called them at attention and waited for the bugle.

After the bugle played, the rain started to come down harder and faster. The First Sergeant looked at everyone and then said, Since the rain as ruin our PT day. I will see you all at 0900. Sergeants don’t take to long to talk to your guys. Then he walked away.

The Sergeants talk to the groups and dismissed them to their smaller groups. Some of the smaller groups started leaving. Oxford, Mancini, and Roberts were in the same small group that was getting instruction from their Sergeant.

After ten minutes in the rain. The Sergeant finally let them go to get ready for the day. All three guys race back to their rooms to change. They got back to the barracks and got inside out of the rain. Then went up stairs and to their rooms. Oxford and Mancini dried off before getting on their other clothes.

As the two of them got ready to go to work. Mancini got a text on his phone. It read:

You and Oxford need to be at the training building no later than 0915. At 1300 you both will be tested for disarming a IED. Since unit are deploying overseas.

Mancini read the message and told Oxford the message. Oxford yelled back, while getting his socks on. As they were finishing. Oxford headed for the door, when Mancini asked him if he wanted coffee for the road. He nodded in agreement as he turned back around. Then both guys with cup of coffee in hand. Headed to work.

They looked outside to see if rain let up. It kept coming down.

Guess we are taking a cab. Said Mancini.

They got outside and saw Roberts getting into a cab. They both hurried to join him. As the door shut. The cab sped off to the destination.

So who’s ready for this surprise test we have? Asked Roberts.

    I’ve been ready. Said Mancini.

I believe I got this. Said Oxford.

Well, I believe it’s going to be two man team with the robot. Said a voice in the back. Oxford and Mancini both turned around to see Sergeant Garcia. He was an African American, salt and pepper hair, stood about 5’7", and had a gentle approach to everything. He was in charge of Oxford, Mancini, and Roberts.

Hey Sergeant Garcia. Didn’t see you back there. Said Mancini.

So we get to have someone with us. This should be easier. Said Oxford.

Plus the robot. Add Sergeant Garcia.

As the cab pulled up to a building. All the guys adjusted themselves. Then the cab came to a stop and the doors flew open. All the guys raced out, like a swat team going into a building. Roberts paid for the cab, while everyone else race to the building to stay out of the rain.

All three got to where the formation was. Sergeant Garcia came up behind them.

That’s a close one. If we were a couple seconds late, never hear the end of it. Said Sergeant Garcia.

Burls looked back and saw the guys at attention.

We still have a couple minutes. First Sergeant is in a meeting with the commander, Sergeant Major, and Battalion Commander. So it must be serious. Burls said with a concern face.

Soon the First Sergeant came out of the room and called his troops to attention. Then introduce the Sergeant Major Henn. Who then introduce Colonel Brighten. Who came to the front of the formation.

    Morning ladies and gentlemen.

    Morning, sir. Said the formation.

I have been told that this group of fine soldiers will be getting deployed over seas for a one year mission down the road. I am giving you all heads up to get things in order to get your finances in order, tell your families, and any other loose ends that you may have. He said with a concern expression. The Colonel talked for about ten more minutes and then handed it over to the Sergeant Major. Who basically repeated everything the Colonel said. Then the Sergeant Major turned to the First Sergeant and gave him his formation back. As the First Sergeant started talking. Oxford could see from the corner of his eye that the Colonel and Sergeant Major was talking to the Commander. For a bit and then they left together.

Like the Colonel and Sergeant Major said. Get everything here straighten up. Cause if something pops up out of the blue and you didn’t take care of it here, there going to be worst consequences. Take this seriously. Said the First Sergeant. He looked at the Commander, if he had anything to say. The Commander came up and took over for the First Sergeant.

This is a repeat of everything the Colonel, Sergeant Major, and First Sergeant said. This is your first and last warning. The minute you get orders in hand is the time you want to get all your finances in order. Commander said. He was just about finished when he said promotions. Oxford turned to give him his full attention.

We will have boards to where you can get promoted. So there is a plus to this. Said the Commander has he gave the formation back to the First Sergeant. Who dismissed them for work.

Oxford and Mancini went to the training area, along with Roberts and Burls.

You guys got that test too? Asked Mancini.

Yeah. It’s about the new bombs that they are using over there. Said Roberts

They just want us to get familiar with what we are going against. Burls continue.

The group chat away when Sergeant First Class Razor came in the room.

Ok, boys and girls. Listen up and listen good. This is Sergeant First Class Myers. He seen these bombs go off and kill seven of his guys. So right now, he is the only one who knows what they look like. Give him your full attention. Razor bellow.

Myers wheeled himself into the room and stopped in front of them.

My name is Jeremy Myers. Retired Explosive Ordinance Expert. The device you are about to see is the biggest bang they have. It takes six guys to lift and place where they want it. Can be by its self or daisy chain. Either way, the radius is ten foot wide and the blast is four foot tall. I know it sounds like something out of a fictional book, but the photos you will see is the real thing. As the light dim out, a projector comes on and shows the bomb. This bomb is also the most expensive threat to us. With four HIgh Explosive round in the middle and another four bigger and fatter explosives around the small one. This is their baddest bomb yet. As you can see, there is nothing left of this vehicle. This was the vehicle carrying my guys and me to a camp not far way. We hit this mega bomb and I got thrown out the windshield, while the rest got rip a part or burn to death.

He pause to pay respect to his fellow soldiers. Then continue. He explain every detail to the bomb. Oxford and the others saw each horror picture come across the projector. Burls had tears coming out. Jeremy then went over to a table and pulled a blanket off to show the bomb to the group. Everyone gaps after seen the mega bomb.

After a whole day of learning about the mega bomb. The day was finally over and time for everyone to go home. Oxford was racing to the cab where Mancini, Burls, and Roberts was in, till he heard his name being called.

Oxford! Shouted the voice behind him.

He turned around to see Sergeant First Class Razor walking over toward him.

Yes Sergeant First Class Razor. Said Oxford.

Lucas got appendicitis and can’t do his Staff Duty. Can you take over?

Sure. Said Oxford. When is it?

I need you there now. He just headed toward the hospital. Thanks for doing this. Plus you will get tomorrow off. Razor said.

Let me tell the guys, that I’m going… then Oxford got cut off.

I’ll tell them. I need you there now! Hurry and get over there. Razor shouted.

Oxford dash over to where the Staff Duty was. As the guys in the cab were confused on what was going on. They shut the siding door and left for the barracks. On the way back, Mancini text Oxford on what was going on. Why SFC. Razor was yelling at him. Oxford reply back on what happen and what he was doing and he would see him at work tomorrow.

At the desk. Oxford sat with Sergeant Montoya. She was a black female who could squeeze the juice out of an orange without peeling it. Her biceps were as big as one of Oxfords legs. He felt so intimidated being around her. And the attitude was so rude. That a pit bull would walk away with his tail between his legs. She was the worst NCO that he knew of.

    All sudden the phone rang.

You going to get that phone, soldier? Montoya yelled at Oxford.

He answered the phone and then gave it to Montoya. She snatched the phone from his hands and put the phone by her head. Then asked who was calling. It was one of her friends calling from another battalion. As they were talking, Oxford just sat and was reading the rules for Staff Duty.

Montoya told her friend to hold on a minute, Don’t you have anything to do, then to be around here. Go clean some floors, pick up trash around the building. Do something. Don’t sit around here. She yelled at Oxford then going back to her call.

Oxford got up and went outside to pick up trash. When he got to the smoking area. He took a cigarette out and was about to light it, when Mancini came by.

Didn’t know if you were hungry or not. So I got you some food. Hopefully this will last you, till you get back to the barracks?

It should help. Thanks. I was already getting hungry and with the NCO on duty with me. I doubt I would eat. said Oxford.

Alright. Glad I could help. Also, do you know anything about this deployment coming up? asked Mancini.

This is the first I heard of it. So I know as much as you do. Said Oxford.

So maybe tomorrow we’ll go out to eat? Asked Mancini.

Sounds good to me. Said Oxford.

Mancini starting leaving and the night drew on. Montoya stayed on the phone for three hours. Then crashed for about another three hours. Oxford kept himself busy by cleaning around his area and walking around in the area. Since he couldn’t watch tv or listen to music.

He stayed awaked till 7 in the morning. Then the sleep started catching up to him. He had two more hours to go. Montoya woke up and got behind the desk.

Well, did you fall asleep too?

No, stayed awaked the whole time, Sergeant.

Un-ah. Montoya sounded in an unimpressed sound. Then continuing, I know you fell asleep, you don’t have to lie to me. I was a soldier to. As her voice got louder, you know lying to a NCO is an article 15?

Yes, Sergeant. But I… Oxford got cut off.

Hell, you were probably staring at me, thinking of ways to kill me. Just like every other soldier in this army I ran across. You all are just like. Can’t take a complement.

As she continue, Oxford was starting to get mad. This NCO was blowing up for nothing. Then Oxford though he heard his name. When Montoya wasn’t looking, he would take a quick glance around. The only people there in the room was Montoya and him. Montoya was still going off, and Oxford prayed for nine o’clock to get here.

After thirty minutes of hearing Montoya, Oxford head to the bathroom. Where he knew she couldn’t go. He took a couple minutes to calm down and wait for the time to leave. He couldn’t wait.

    Oxford.

He looked around and didn’t see anyone. He looked in the stalls and seen if the window was open. The window was shit and locked and no one was in the stalls. He was the only one in the room. Soon he was calm enough to go back out and wait for the next people on duty. Before leaving the bathroom, he looked around again for someone. And again, no one was in there. He listen for is name again and nothing. He could hear the wind and some people outside talking. Nothing as loud as he heard his name being called. He open the door and walked back to where Montoya was.

You get lost? Maybe fell in and almost drown? You need to hurry in everything you do or your not going to make it in this world. Montoya said in a loud voice.

Oxford tried to tune her out and wait for the time.

Before he knew it. It was time to go. But before he left, Montoya had him take the trash out, clean the bathroom, and vacuum the floor. So he hurried to get it done.

By the time he was done, Montoya was already gone. The NCO was there said he could go. So he raced back to the barracks. So he could get some sleep.

As he got back to his barrack, and up to his room. Mancini and Roberts texted him. Something about big news at the end of formation. He texted back to tell him later and crashed in his bed. In less then five minutes. He was out.

Roberts, Mancini, and Burls were at work ready for the day. Just as all three went to the classroom for a briefing. Burls name was called out.

    Jenny! Someone yelled out.

Burls turned to see who was yelling her. At first, she didn’t recognize anyone.

    Jenny Burls!

Then she saw who it was. One of her old school friends from school. It was Cindy Dupree. A sandy brown hair, athletic built, and smart as a whip.

    She started headed toward Burls.

Jenny. How are you doing? Long time. Haven’t seen you in four years.

I’ve been here making a career out of this. Said Burls.

So your a specialist…nice! Said Dupree.

So what are you doing here?

I join after everyone left me behind. Rita got married and move to New York, Hanna went to California, and Wendy is in Ohio doing who knows what. So anything new, besides in the Army? Said Dupree.

The girls went their own way, splitting up from the guys.

Wow! Well, we will talk to you later. Ok, bye guys, would of been nice. Mancini said in a joking way.

It’s good. One of her friends that she as barely seen. I understand. Said Oxford.

The guys took a seat in the middle row. Dupree and Burls sat in back. They waited for everyone to come in and be seated. After everyone sat. The brief had begun. It was approximately three and a half hours long. Then after that was final formation.

As everyone stood there waiting for the 1st Sergeant to take charge. Oxford looked at Mancini to see if he knew what was going on. Mancini gave him a look of disappointment. Then Oxford looked at Roberts. Roberts gave one back that looked all confused. Oxford shook his head and went back to attention.

Soon the 1st Sergeant came out to the front of formation. Called them to attention and then at ease. Gave them a safety brief on this weekend and then called the Commander up to talk.

In a month will be a promotion board. So everyone needs to study and be ready. Next week the names will be given to your chiefs to tell who’s going and who’s not. So have uniforms ready, brain cram with knowledge, and then get ready for that big promotion. I can tell you that our 1st Sergeant will be there. So be ready. The Commander said with a big smile. Then turned the formation over to the 1st Sergeant who basically repeated what the Commander got done saying. After he finish he turned it over to the chiefs to talk to them. Oxford’s chief talked about the board and then told them to have a safe weekend. Then dismiss them. Oxford, Roberts, and Mancini. Started walking toward the barracks when Burls stop them.

Hey, you all want to go out and eat with me and Dupree?

I’m up for that! said Roberts.

    Ok. I’m game. said Mancini.

Oxford didn’t want to go, but didn’t want to be left out.

    Where we going? Oxford
