About this ebook

With two failed relationships that had broken her heart, Bridget had finally decided that Pleasantville wasnt for her. The pain of losing James and Billy proved to be too much for her. All she had ever wanted was to be able to love a man and be accepted for who she was inside and out. But now, as Kim and Tyler would prepare to become adults themselves, Bridget would struggle with the hardest fight of her life. She had no idea that during this summer of change, her life would take a dramatic turn that would have an impact on everyone who was involved in Bridgets life. CHAPTER 1

James grabbed his morning coffee and sat down at his kitchen table. He stared at his wedding band on his finger and knew things weren’t what they were supposed to be with his life. He had been living a mundane existence for the past two years of his marriage. It was late May and his seven year wedding anniversary was six months away. James continued to question himself as to why he continued to drag out this farce of a relationship with Jackie. For the past two years after Bridget and Billy’s divorce, James’ marriage began to show severe cracks. He kicked himself for not standing up and fighting harder to keep Bridget from marrying Billy. He took his wedding band off and spun it around on the kitchen table as he continued to think to himself. Jackie walked into the kitchen and watched as him as he played with the ring. What is going on with you? She asked him angrily. He glanced up at her and slid his ring back onto his finger. Jackie sat down at the end of the table to face him. You have been distant with me lately, and I would like to know what is going on with you? she said still pushing him for an answer. I have to get ready for work, he said standing up and setting his coffee cup by the sink. You have time to talk to me so stop ignoring me! Jackie shouted at him while he placed his hands onto the kitchen counter. Not now, I don’t want to do this now. I have a lot of work to do today and then we will talk I promise, he said walking out of the kitchen and up the back stairs to his bedroom. Jackie sat and let out a long sigh when Megan walked in the front door. Megan was now 23 years old and very beautiful. She looked exactly like James, only with the manicured eyebrows and long hair that she would throw back into a messy ponytail, just like Bridget. Megan completed her college degree in nursing and she had a current steady boyfriend named Jeff. She walked down the hallway to the kitchen and seen Jackie sitting at the table. She sat down at the table as Jackie offered her a cup of coffee. No thank you I have a coffee out in the car. Where is daddy I need to talk to him? Megan said looking around the kitchen. He is upstairs getting ready for work, is there anything I can help you with? Jackie asked curiously. Megan stared at her biting her lip and said, No I need to talk to him just for a second. It isn’t any big deal I just wanted to talk to him for a bit. The room became quiet as Megan began to fidget around in her chair waiting on James. Finally, James came jogging down the stairs in his dress pants and nice shirt smelling of cologne. As he walked into the kitchen from the back stairs he said, Hey baby girl what are you doing here? He started to fix his tie as he looked at her and Jackie. Jackie glanced over at Megan and she smiled back at Jackie. I take it you want this to be a private conversation? Jackie asked Megan as she looked over at James. It doesn’t have to be private does it? James asked Megan as she folded her arms and said, No it doesn’t have to be private daddy. I just wanted to let you know Kim and Tyler are graduating this weekend and momma is going to be in town for the graduation. Now the reason I bring this up is I don’t want there to be any surprises if you see her around town since I know everyone seems to freak out when momma shows up. Megan stood up as she finished her sentence and James stood quietly staring at Jackie. When Megan left the house, Jackie looked at James and made a pinched face. So the love of your life is coming back to town, Jackie said giving James a nasty look. Jackie please don’t start this shit. I am sure you noticed I didn’t act any different when she told me Bridget will be back in town. I didn’t get giddy and excited, I just looked at her and listened to what she had to say. Besides, I am married to you can’t that be enough proof as to who owns me? he said rudely grabbing his briefcase and then he walked out the front door. Jackie felt sick to her stomach when he said those words to her. She felt as if he was really miserable being married to her. Jackie didn’t want to force someone to be married to her that was an insult. Besides, she knew she was beautiful and smart. She had a lot to offer any man out there. Currently, she wasn’t working since she had married James. She had quit her job working for the Hillenbrand Company many years before. Jackie grabbed her keys and headed over to the Mackenvoy manor to see Victoria. She couldn’t help but feel extremely upset about the whole situation. She didn’t want there to be any surprises for Victoria. After all, she adored her as her mother in law and she didn’t want things to change on the account of Bridget. As Victoria invited Jackie inside she offered her something to drink. Jackie began to cry and said, I am feeling a little threatened at the moment. James has been very distant with me for a long time now and I was hoping he would pull out of whatever he was going through, but I think things are about ready to get much worse. Victoria stared at her waiting intently for her to tell her more. Jackie stopped for a moment to cry under her breath. How long has my son been treating you poorly? Victoria asked her raising an eyebrow. Jackie thought for a few seconds and said, For at least the past two years I have noticed a change in his behavior towards me. It is like he is blaming me for something, but I don’t know what it is. I tried to talk to him this morning, but he rushed out the door after Megan told him Bridget would be back in town, Jackie said wiping her nose with a tissue. Victoria’s eyes became large and she raised her eyebrows, Why is she coming back to town? she asked Jackie. She is just coming to town for the twin’s graduation and then she is leaving again. She isn’t planning on staying in town as far as I know, Jackie said while Victoria let out a long sigh. Well she will stick around town if she gets around that ridiculous Billy Hillenbrand again, Victoria said standing up and pouring her coffee. No I am pretty sure it is over between Bridget and Billy. He made it perfectly clear that she don’t mean much to him like he had let on all those years they were married. It was all fake just to get under James’ skin, Jackie said while Victoria stared off stirring her coffee. All the more reason to make sure she doesn’t stick around town. If she sticks around town then she will surely come after my son and try to worm her way back into my family and I refuse to let that happen, Victoria said sitting back down at the table. Do you really think she will come after James? I mean he has acted so different towards me after Bridget’s divorce and it does feel like it is only a matter of time, Jackie said. Exactly what I mean my dear, Bridget has always been chasing that dream of being rich and famous. I don’t care what my son says, I know her kind. And I won’t allow her to come in between you and my son I promise you that, Victoria said taking a small sip of her coffee. Well I don’t want him staying married to me if he doesn’t want to be, Victoria, I have more self-respect than that. I will walk away from this marriage before I make him feel like he is trapped with me. There are other men out there who will appreciate me, Jackie said as she stood up and hugged her before leaving the house. Victoria stood stoically for a moment and then grabbed her cell phone. She dialed the numbers and waited for the answer on the other line. Yes hello Julie, this is Victoria. How are things going in the Hamptons? she asked the lady on the other line smiling. After she listened to Julie talk about Hampton life she lost her smile and said, I need a huge favor from you. Are you still in contact with your cousin, Dennis? She paused waiting for the reply and when she got it she smiled from ear to ear. Excellent, I think I am going to need his help in a matter that has come up. I would greatly appreciate it, After she finished her talk with Julie she smiled and dialed Colton. Hello my darling, I was wondering if we could have a family meeting about this August’s tournament. she asked as Colton held the phone for a few seconds, Sure sweetheart we can do that. Why do you have some suggestion? She smiled widely as she said, Yes my dear, I certainly do. James sat at his desk in his office once again staring at his wedding band on his finger. He was at a point in his life where he knew he was getting older and he was tired of living his life on other people’s terms. Suddenly, his door flung open and Marcus walked inside. Hey brother how are you doing this fine morning? He asked James smiling. I am doing okay I guess, do you have those papers ready for daddy I am assuming? James asked while Marcus nodded his head. Cullen popped his head in the door quickly and said, Hey guys Uncle Colton told me to let you know we are having a family meeting at his house tonight something about the tournament this summer. Marcus and James both looked at each other surprised. Normally every other summer when they would have the tournaments nothing special would happen. They would walk into the arena and read who they would be fighting that day, plain and simple. Later that night everyone congregated at Colton’s house to discuss the fight. Dylan, Caleb, Hunter and Justin were all grown men now. Justin was now a legal attorney assistant who worked along beside Marcus. Caleb, Dylan and Hunter all three worked for the family business in different areas of work. Dylan was 20 years old and he also looked very much like James, but he had that ever present dark hair that helped give Victoria the leverage she needed for the paternity test those many years earlier. Dylan had a sweet personality, he and Kim were identical in personality as Megan and Tyler were with their personalities. Colton spoke up as everyone sat down and prepared themselves for why they were there. Alright everyone, the tournament this year will be a little different. Victoria has brought up an idea and I am thinking we will get a lot of ticket sales for charity if we do this. I will send a note over to Packard Hillenbrand and put the bug in his ear to see what he thinks about it. But, what if this year we have the boys fight? Colton said as everyone stared at him taking in what he was saying. Wait you mean boys as in us? Caleb asked pointing at himself. Colton nodded his head yes and Caleb gave a huge smile, Hell yeah I am all for it and hopefully I get teamed up with that ridiculous Noah Hillenbrand. I have been wanting a piece of him for ages now. Cullen shook his head and looked over at his son and said, Calm down will you, nobody has decided for a fact it should be you boys. Colton stood up and started to explain in more detail, Well what we are thinking is the boys are old enough now they are ready to fight. People may be getting a little tired of watching all you older guys fight and they want to see something new. James, Marcus, Cullen and Rick all looked at each other. Rick had his arms crossed and shrugged his shoulders, I think it is a good idea. We can all work with the boys to get them in shape and teach them how to fight. What do you think guys? he asked looking at Cullen, Marcus and James. I guess they will do what they have to do, but I am not sure how Olivia will take it, Marcus said standing with his hands on his sides. Well good we are all in agreement and I will get that memo sent to the Hillenbrands. Oh and there is one more thing. I am not sure how you will feel about his James, but Victoria thought it would be best if we match up Dylan and Tyler in the ring. That will really drum up attention for this fight, Colton said nonchalantly as he walked over to his desk. Victoria smiled while Dylan looked quickly at James and then back at Colton.

    CHAPTER 2

Dylan sat stunned for a moment thinking of what Colton had just said. Everyone else in the room had the look of shock on their faces. Granddad, I don’t think I can fight my own brother in this thing that wouldn’t be right, Dylan said looking back at James. Boy, it has nothing to do with being brothers. You are a Mackenvoy he is a Hillenbrand and it is an honest fight, Colton said as he started to type up the memo. But, I can’t do this momma won’t go for it, Dylan started to say as Victoria interrupted, Your mother has no say in what the Mackenvoy or Hillenbrands do. Cullen became very upset and stood up pointing at her, I know what you are doing and there is absolutely no reason for this shit! As he shouted Colton looked up at him hatefully while Rick walked over and slammed his hand down on Cullen’s shoulder. Now son calm down you know as well as I do these fights are monitored. They are just sparring matches and Bridget knows that. Cullen continued to shake his head no and looked over at James. James stared at the floor at a loss for words. Dylan looked at James and whispered, Daddy I can’t do this he is my brother. Just then Colton stood up with an angry expression on his face. Boy you will do what you are told. If she didn’t want her two sons fighting then maybe she shouldn’t have had a Mackenvoy and Hillenbrand child, Colton said callously as James rolled his eyes. James walked over to Dylan and whispered, Listen son, we will talk about this later don’t get him all pissed off. Dylan angrily opened the door and slammed it as he stomped out. Victoria continued to smile looking directly at Cullen. Cullen gave her evil eyes back and smirked at her. When James walked out the door, Cullen followed behind him very upset. You can’t let her do this you know what she is doing! Cullen told him. James kept his head down covering his mouth with his hand. What can I do? Really what can I fucking do, she did have babies by both families and these fights do happen every other year it was bound to happen between these two, James said as Cullen became more agitated. Yeah maybe so, but he don’t have to fight Tyler he could fight J.T or Noah. This is bullshit Victoria is just trying to get one up on Bridget once again and you know it! Don’t let her do this shit. As Cullen was grumbling Caleb walked up to him. Go ahead and get in the car son I will be there in a minute, Cullen said to Caleb and then he looked back at James. You do something about this. You don’t let Victoria do this because if you don’t then that will break Bridget’s heart and I think she has been through enough wouldn’t you say, Cullen said and then he walked off. James walked over to his car and sat down in the driver’s seat while Dylan stared out the side window. I just can’t believe they want me to fight my own brother, Dylan said still stunned by the news. James drove down the road holding onto the steering wheel tightly. Look son, I know it seems unbelievable but really this is par for the course with our family. Bad things happen a lot of times with us and the sooner you get used to it the better. This is our family for you. I will try to talk daddy out of it, but he is typing up the memo as we speak and I know I am not going to be able to do anything, James said sadly. After he dropped Dylan off at his apartment, James went home to explain everything to Jackie. She was just as surprised as everyone else was with the tournament plans. James had planned on talking to her that night about their marriage, but after this meeting he had enough on his plate. He also knew if Victoria found out he wanted to end his marriage, she would be relentless raging war against Bridget. James thought to himself maybe this fight wouldn’t be so bad. The fights generally last 20 minutes and then everything would go back to normal, so he thought. The next day Packard received the memo from Colton, he called a meeting between his boys and their sons at his ranch. Jack sat for a moment and said, Now wait a minute, they have four boys on their side we only have three. Someone should have to sit out on their side. Packard shook his head in agreement. Maybe it should be Dylan, Tyler spoke up looking at Billy. Daddy I don’t want to fight my brother I don’t care if he is a Mackenvoy I don’t want to fight him. Billy shook his head frustrated, What are you afraid? Do you think you are going to lose? Tyler made a furrowed brow and said, No it isn’t that. It is just we shouldn’t be fighting we are brothers. Packard raised his voice as he looked hard at Tyler, You are a Hillenbrand more than you are his brother. You only share half of Bridget, that don’t make you any less of a Hillenbrand. She made her bed so she should have to lie in it. The fight will be as is, Walker type up a response to Colton that we are all for it, but Justin will sit out so it is a fair fight between both families. Packard continued to stare hard at Tyler and Billy. Tyler ran his fingers through his hair and walked out of the house clearly upset. You make sure he gets in the right state of mind to fight. I don’t want any holding back in this family, he is going to try his hardest to win, Packard said to Billy as he nodded his head. Billy walked outside and took a deep breath when Joey came up behind him. Hey brother, what do you think about all this? Joey asked him as Billy looked over at the horse’s barn. His mind went back to when he and Bridget first began their relationship and his heart ached for a moment. I think we have no choice, you know how daddy is. If Colton isn’t going to back down then neither is daddy. I don’t want them fighting because I know it will hurt Bridget, but she should have thought of that shouldn’t she? If we were still married I could protect her, but now I can’t, Billy said as he stomped off the porch and drove away with Tyler. Billy dropped Tyler off at the cabin he himself used to live in before he and Bridget married. Then he headed out of town, he had a lot of thinking to do. He pulled up to his Uncle Walter’s ranch and went into the barn. He stood there thinking once again of Bridget and himself. He whistled loudly as he waited, he shook his head knowing there was nothing he could do. Suddenly he could hear her coming, the thundering hooves echoed louder as she ran up to the fenced in ring. It was Aphrodite. Billy walked up to her and he began rubbing her nose and he kissed her. He rested his forehead against hers as he thought deeply. Nobody was aware he still had Aphrodite, except Walter. It was a secret he had even kept from his kids. Aphrodite meant as much to him as she did to Bridget and he couldn’t let her go. She was the only thing, besides his tattoo, that connected him to Bridget. It was his way of still having a piece of her. He never wanted to let her go, but he felt he could never trust her where James or the Mackenvoys were concerned. He knew Bridget would be at the graduation and he knew he had to be strong. He had to pretend like she didn’t mean a thing to him. He couldn’t let her know that she once again beat him. She was the one person who could reach deep into his heart and stay there no matter what he had done to forget her. He dated many women in those two years, but he finally settled into a relationship with a beautiful socialite named Kelly. Her father, Bob, was an important businessman in Knoxville and Packard was currently working on a business deal with him. Packard pushed Billy to be faithful to only Kelly. Billy did feel a closeness to Kelly out of all the women he had dated over those two years, but he still didn’t want to give himself completely to a woman again. Things felt as though they were moving at a fast pace with Kelly and there was nothing he could do to slow it down. He knew he had to do what he had to do to forget Bridget. He reminded himself of that fact as he left the barn and started back home. It was finally June 1st, graduation day for the twins! Bridget was extremely nervous to come back to Pleasantville. Bridget helped Kim get her robe and cap together for the big celebration with tears in her eyes. She couldn’t believe it, all her kids were completely grown now! She had done her job, she raised them to love one another even if she had to lose the two loves of her life in the process. To her, her kids were much more important than her own happiness. She knows she could have fought harder to try and get Billy to see that he was mistaken, but she didn’t want to put the kids through anymore turmoil. Kim already felt extremely guilty for becoming involved with Hunter in first place. But, that didn’t matter anymore. Bridget made Kim realize that she and Billy were adults, only they were responsible for the end of their marriage and nobody else. Bridget herself didn’t date anyone for those two years following her divorce. It was just simply too hard for her to get close to another man. She couldn’t stop thinking about Billy. Kim and Tyler were both gorgeous adults. Kim still looked exactly like Billy in the face while Tyler looked like Billy in every other way. Bridget and Kim climbed into her Ford Escape as she headed to Pleasantville. Bridget had butterflies about seeing Billy. Could she be strong enough? It had only been two years since she last seen him and she knew full well she had went away for ten years and still wasn’t ready to see James. When they pulled up to auditorium, Bridget took a deep breath as they walked into the building. Bridget stayed in the back as she watched all the students sitting down to get prepared for the ceremony. Meanwhile, James sat at his house with anxiety filling his chest. He knew what time the graduation was and he knew Bridget was only 20 minutes from him if he wanted to go talk to her. Even after all of this time, he would still get weak in the knees when he was around Bridget. He hated it because she had such a power over him, to make him feel like a love sick puppy. He also thought about how Billy will be there at the ceremony and if Billy loved her half as much as he did he would want to give their relationship another shot. He was well aware of Billy dating Kelly, but he knew as well as anyone that Billy wasn’t to be trusted. Jackie watched James’ agitation and she couldn’t help but ask him, What is bothering you, baby? He was pacing up and down the hallway, but stopped when she asked him that question. He grudgingly looked at her and said, I know this is going to piss you off, but really I am worried about what is going to happen with the whole Bridget and Billy thing. Jackie rolled her eyes and let out a loud sigh. No, now wait just hear me at out please. It isn’t because I want to be with her obviously I am with you. It is because Billy Hillenbrand isn’t trustworthy and if he thinks he has feelings for her I am afraid of what he might do. I am worried he may try to pull her back in and then she will get hurt all over again, he said trying to justify his worry. Jackie shook her head laughing. You are so funny, you are so freaking obvious it makes me sick! she shouted as he looked at her in disbelief. What the hell are you talking about? he asked in a calm voice. If you are so worried about her then why don’t you go save your damsel in distress? I won’t stop you from doing what you want to do! she yelled at him before storming up the stairs. James stood in the hallway covering his mouth and then running his fingers through his hair trying to decide on if he should go to help her. But, he knew Jackie was his wife and her feelings should come first. He had to think for a little while. A half hour later, Bridget became excited as she heard Tyler and Kimberly’s names being called on to get their diplomas. She clapped her hands as a tear ran down her cheek. She began to snap a few pictures when all the sudden she heard a voice behind her, Isn’t it amazing how quickly they grow up?

    CHAPTER 3

Bridget lowered her camera and turned around to see James looking at her. Bridget smiled dropping her head down, feeling a bit shy since she hadn’t talked to him for a few years. Yes they do seem to grow up very quickly, she said staring back at him. He looked at the stage as Kim and Tyler walked down the stairs to take their seats. You did a good job raising all four of the kids under the circumstances, he said with a serious face. Thanks James, that means a lot. I know you may not agree with how I did things over the years, she started to say as he interrupted, On the contrary, I don’t blame you one bit for leaving my ass. I still think it is a shame you didn’t leave Billy Hillenbrand, but the way I see it is he did you a favor by letting you go. Bridget looked back down at the floor shaking her head, I don’t want to talk about this. James looked back behind him and said, Would you like to walk outside and talk to me? The kids won’t be coming out for a while yet, he said turning to walk out of the building as Bridget followed. Billy stood down close to the stage in the darkness where Bridget couldn’t see him. He watched while James and Bridget talked. Kelly was standing by his side smiling from ear to ear at the kids. Billy couldn’t take his eyes off of Bridget. When he watched them walk out of the building he shook his head and looked at the kids to give them a nod on their achievement. Bridget followed James into the yard next to the building so they could talk privately. I am sorry if I seemed rude about your second marriage, it really isn’t any of my business, he said feeling a bit foolish for letting his feelings show. James shoved his hands into his pockets as he stared at her. She avoided looking him in the eye as she skimmed through her photos she had just taken on her camera. Do you feel awkward talking to me? he asked her. She looked up quickly and said, No not at all. I just don’t want to talk about certain things about my life. It is the past and I would rather keep it there if it is all the same to you. He shook his head yes and rubbed her arm, It is really good to have you back in town, I have missed you. She felt herself blush and she said, I am only in town for a couple of days. I don’t have any business staying any longer than that. Where are you staying at? he asked with a nosy tone to his voice. I am thinking of staying with Cindy and Joey. Kim is going to stay with Billy, and Tyler has been living in Billy’s old cabin. James nodded his head again and said, Why don’t you stay in my guest house? She looked up quickly at him shocked. I mean it would be easier for you wouldn’t it? If you stay with Cindy then there is a large chance Billy will give you a hard time and I know you don’t need that, he said eyeing her uncomfortableness. Come on Bridget, you know me I am not going to give you a hard time and I promise I will not bring up your divorce scouts honor, he said laughing while he held up two fingers. What will Jackie think? I don’t think she would be too happy with me being anywhere near her territory, Bridget said rolling her eyes. James giggled and said, Oh you get that too? It is funny how she stakes her claim when you are around, but no it doesn’t matter what she thinks of this. I am just trying to be a good friend and offer you a place to stay. It isn’t in my house for heaven’s sake, it is out back. Bridget crossed her arms and was thinking when she heard Kim shout excitedly behind her. Bridget turned around to look at Kim and then she seen him. Billy walking hand in hand with Kelly behind the twins. Bridget looked back at James and nodded, Okay just give me a few minutes and I will bring my bag to the guest house. he smiled and said, See you soon and good luck. James walked back to his car when Kim ran up to Bridget throwing her arms around her. I am so happy I finally feel like I am an adult! she yelled excited while Tyler also threw his arms around Bridget. So what the hell did he want? Billy asked as he walked up with Kelly. Bridget stared at him for a moment and said, Hello to you too Billy. Aren’t you going to introduce me? He stared deeply into her eyes while Kelly looked up at him. Kelly Bridget, Bridget Kelly, he said grumpily. Bridget reached out and shook Kelly’s hand. Kelly was extremely beautiful with light brown shoulder length wavy hair and light blue eyes. It is a pleasure to meet you, the twins talk about you all the time, Kelly said kindly as Bridget smiled. It is very nice to meet you as well, Bridget said back to her. The moment became quiet as nobody knew exactly what to say to one another. Bridget gave both the kids a hug and said, Look I will see you two later for dinner, maybe we can meet at the Pizza Hut if that is okay? Bridget asked looking at both Kim and Tyler. Tyler laughed and said, Why don’t we just have dinner at Aunt Cindy’s? Bridget shoved her camera into her purse and said, I am not staying at Cindy’s. I will just meet you two at 7:00pm tonight. She began to walk to her car as the kids looked at each other a little confused. Billy realized something was up with her and darted over to her car. Hey hold up! Why aren’t you staying with Cindy? he asked her as she opened her car door. It really isn’t any of your business, but I think under the circumstances it would be better if I am not too close to you, She said sitting down in her seat.
