    Starting Over - Savina Joyce

    Chapter One

Jia took one last look around the house. She remembered when she had bought this place. That day had been one of the happiest of her life. She felt like she was coming home. Now, looking at this living room, she felt like her entire life was a lie. There were no tears left for her to cry. She turned and walked out the door.

The car was in the driveway, full of all her earthly possessions. Jia had taken anything that wasn’t nailed down. She didn’t care about the big TV, that was for Jim and his sports. The HDMI cables that gave her former husband those great high definition details he liked so much, they were a different story. Jia might need them at her new place.

She took all the curtains too. Jia picked them out, paid for them, and she was petty. Wouldn’t Jim be surprised when he came home to all those bare windows? He never could sleep without his blackout curtains.

Jia wished she could be bold like those girls on TV and burn the house to the ground. The thought of her ex-husband living there made her stomach turn. This was supposed to be their dream house. She resisted the urge to commit arson only because prison was not in her plans.

Luckily, Jia didn’t have far to drive to start her new life. In three short hours, she would be back in Orlando. She was moving back into the house where she grew up. As she drove, she told herself she was making the right choice.

She kept replaying their last conversation in her mind.

You love me, right? Jim asked.

What did you do? Jia asked, half joking.

You know I’ve never been married before. I can’t say that I’ve been the perfect husband. You haven’t exactly been a perfect wife, he started.

Get to the point, Jim, she said, crossing her arms.

Jia didn’t like where this was heading.

Well, I haven’t been completely honest with you. Those nights when I was working late, I was working late. It might not have been as late as I made it out to be.

So, where exactly have you been every night?

Well, you know Jessica from work? She’s been working late too. There’s been a lot going on. Because we both working so much we ended up spending a lot of time together.

    You can stop right there.

No. Jia, I have to get this off my chest so that we can move forward. So, we can fix our marriage.

If you’re going to tell me that you cheated on me, there is no marriage left to fix.

You’re overreacting. It only happened once, well twice. Jessica doesn’t mean anything to me. I love you. There are some things that you can’t do with your wife.

As he uttered his last phrase, Jia went very still. Her eyes got wide. She ripped the lamp on the table beside her from the wall and threw it at him. Jim managed to duck just in time. He ran out of the house and hadn’t been back since.

That didn’t stop him from calling and texting. Jim even made
