    PREFACE

    3 TRUE STORIES AND 3 ‘P’ s

This book will cover many areas of decision making with the aim always of being the ‘right one’. That is the sensible one, the profitable one, the winning one.

Before embarking on many subjects and strategies, I want to write about three situations I know about which embody core factors that determine successful winning outcomes. All impressed me greatly and influenced my life in different ways

In the early part of the 1900’s a young woman called Miriam worked in a Catholic newspaper office in Manchester, England. She had become, even at a young age, the Office Manageress, and was asked by her boss to advertise a small factory premises for rent, that the Newspaper owned but did not use. Anticipating a very large interest, Miriam placed an advertisement in the paper and specifically stated that only written applications would be considered.

The morning after the advertisement appeared, there was a knock on the office ‘window’ (much used in those days) by a young applicant who stated to Miriam that he was interested in the premises, and indeed wanted them. He was told to apply in writing only as there was already many replies and more were expected.

The next morning he again knocked on the window and was told that the many written replies would be looked at soon when Miriam had some free time. He appeared in the same way on the third morning, the fourth morning and finally again on the fifth. On this morning Miriam looked hard at him and said this can’t go on - I’m going to let you have these premises.

The young man started a garment manufacturing business in the premises which, in the fullness of time, became very successful.
