    Introduction

We’re going to be a little unconventional.

In my years of mentoring and training athletes, the traditional approach works in most situations. It works when there’s enough time, enough resources, enough experience to accomplish the goal.

But when we don’t have one (or any) of those, then it’s time for a different game plan. In tough situations, we’ve got to be unconventional.

The equivalent in the game of being a Debt-Free College Athlete is that, traditionally I could give you some financial know-how, a rundown of how college works, and leave you with a to-do list. That would be the case if being a DFCA were a cake-walk.

    But it’s not.

It’s quite a feat. But it’s all good, because over the years I have learned the unconventional playbook — and it works.

And it worked for James too …

I pressed the start button on the treadmill to begin the 12-minute fitness test. James began sucking wind around five minutes and reached his physical limit just two minutes later. Dripping with sweat, he was huffing and puffing with a flushed white face. He stumbled off the treadmill to the bathroom and quickly threw up.

    This was bad news.

James was determined to be a Division I athlete, and I was hired to train him to get there. The problem was, he only had one month before tryouts and he was unable to do a baseline fitness test.

When I first started working with him, just 7 months before tryouts, I knew from watching his technique and form that we were going to need a miracle. He was extremely tense, choppy, mentally defeated, and physically beat-up.

To make matters worse, James had several recurring injuries, some of which had been operated on. A few meaning; knee, back, hip, groin, and ankle — it was rough.

His knee surgery impacted the muscle mass in his leg so that one leg was larger and stronger than the other, and he was unable to balance them out since the surgery. Before each training session he would wrap his ankle tight to avoid rolling it again, and he put on a heavy groin wrap to avoid pulling that again. He often looked like he was prepared for battle by the time we were ready to begin training.

James was also emotionally in a tough place. He had very little confidence and what confidence he had seemed easily shakable. Every time he would fall short even a bit, it would wreck him mentally.

I came to find that James was consistently overtraining and wouldn’t rest. His mom would find him training late at night in the basement trying to improve his skills. James’ insatiable desire to improve his game was eating up his rest time and testing his recurring injuries.

After our first training session, I felt terrible. I wasn’t sure I could help him become a D1 soccer player even if we had 2+ years to work together. I had recently graduated college as a D1 soccer player so I knew what it took to play at that level. I could tell he was a very long way away, and time was not on his side with just 7 months until he needed to be ready.

In the beginning, we were working together only once a week for an hour, the traditional approach.

    However, I knew if he
