Introduction
I would like to welcome you to The Performance Manifesto. The aim of this book is to help you improve your performance in the everyday tasks, as well as more challenging opportunities of your life. In work it will help you in situations such as presentations, meetings, interviews & sales pitches etc. In your private life it will help you in your relationships, hobbies, sports, family, fitness etc. This is done by teaching you simple techniques that are easy to employ every single day of your life. You will learn sports psychology, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnotic techniques that are normally used by sports people to improve their performance.
I, like most people, want to perform well and be good at whatever I do. Hell, I want to be more than good. I want to excel. In my case I want to be successful in my business and my sport of sailing. I also want a happy and content personal life. I am a qualified hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner. I have read many books, completed various programmes about self improvement, sports psychology and performance and enjoyed them all. I always learnt something from each and every one of them which is fantastic. The problem I had is that I struggled to put all these great ideas into my performance on a consistent basis.
I forgot things. I made the same mistake over and over again. I didn’t use the right technique I had learned or I applied it in the wrong manner. I plain just didn’t bother. Why did I do this? The simple answer is that it is human nature to do all of the above. While reading and learning these ideas I moved from one book to the next and from one programme to the next without really internalising the skills. I didn’t make them my own so that I could call on them when I needed them, when I needed to perform at my very best. Why?
Because it was too much information.
I then discovered that many of my clients in my clinic had similar problems not only with their sporting performances but with more everyday tasks and challenges.
So I decided to devise a simple plan that fitted on a business card which I called My Mentor Me Card
(MMM). This along with a simple technique and regular practice has enabled me to significantly improve my performance in all areas of my life. It has been fantastic. I have also used it with clients to help them improve in a wide range of different areas. I believe that this card will also improve your performance by changing your mental approach before, during and after any act, deed, or area that you are about to take part in. See Appendix 2 for an example of a MMM card for a presentation. Other examples of some of the MMM cards that my clients have used can be seen at www.theperformancemanifesto.com.
This My Mentor Me Card is the solution to excellent performance in all areas of your life. I have written a short User Guide to accompany the Card
which explains how to use it and a simple description of each point. It is a no nonsense approach. This is in Appendix 1 which will allow you to use the system immediately. For those who like more detail, read the book – it’s less than 80 pages long.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who taught me about the mind and how best to utilise it. Some taught me in person while with others it was via their books, audios, videos or online, and some taught purely by example. In no particular order thanks to Bob Proctor, Bob Rotella, Joe Keaney, Tony Robins, Gerry Robert, Vic Johnson, Dr Robert Anthony, Jim Fannin, Jason Selk, Dr Stephen Simpson, Brian Colbert, Ben Duncan, Anik Singal, Dr Steve Peters, Tony Horton and Shaun T.
I hope you enjoy it. I hope you use it to perform at the very top of your game be it sport, business, family or just life
