Perfect Combination - ALISON L. DAVIS
Prologue
Alandra is admiring the way she looks in her wedding dress that’s pure whit with beautiful emerald colored laces that contrast to the shape of her 5ft 5inch body frame in her full length mirror that hanging on the back of her bedroom door. Her wedding is scheduled to take place at Freedom Temple church within three weeks from today. She’s planning to recite her wedding vows to her first love Jamal. Alandra and Jamal has been an item since her junior year at Coral Gables Senior High School.
From day one that they have met it was love at first sight, when they had accidentally bumped into one another in the hallway going to their third period class. It was a mistake on Jamal’s part when he caused her to drop all of her books that she was carrying in her arms. They both bent down to retrieve the items that were sprawled in the hallway at the exact same time. Jamal politely apologized for not looking in the direction that he was walking and Alandra gladly accepted it with a smile on her face. While he was wiping of the debris from her books he couldn’t help but notice how beautiful she really was and she noticed that he had a smile on his face.
Alandra felt a little uncomfortable at the way he was starring at her and decided to retrieve her books from his grasp and thanked him once again. Jamal stood at 6ft 3in. Tall with a masculine built towering over her. His complexion was a smooth Dark chocolate with full luscious lips with deep dimples on both cheeks. He was drop dead gorgeous she thought and felt that she was to plain for him to be attracted to. They both stood there mesmerized in the middle of the one thousand hall lost for words. Jamal took the first initiative to speak, by introducing himself as he extended his right arm out to shake her hand.
Hi I’m Jamal Jefferson. Alandra smiled and shook his hand. Hi Jamal my name is Alandra. Well do you have a last name Miss Alandra? Oh yes please forgive me. My last name is Taylor. Alandra Taylor. Well what a beautiful name for a beautiful lady replied Jamal, which caused her to remove her hand from his. She felt bashful and said thank you once again.
The ringing of the phone had brought Alandra back to the future and out of memory lane. Hello. Hey girl what’s up? It was her first cousin Rachael Rachael asked her if she was ready to meet up at Freedom Temple for her wedding rehearsal. She then explain to her that if she’s ready her chauffeur will be waiting outside her door as of now. Alandra knows how crazy her cousin can be and jumped out of bed to check to see if she was there. Low and behold there she was leaning up against her car with cell phone in hand as she speaks.
Alright Rach, give me about ten more minutes and I’ll be right down. Rachael screams back saying I’ll give your ass five more minutes flat to get your butt down her and in the car or you’ll be walking to the church and she smiled. She then reached her right arm through the window of her Lexus and blew the horn twice and yelled on your mark get set go!
as she’s checking the time on her movado watch to playfully time her. Girl you are still stupid, playful, and most of all S.I.L.L.Y you do know that right. Well I said what I had to say Alandra and I’m not playing, so move your buttons honey. Whatever Rach, I’ll be there as soon as I can. What you had a bad night or something Alandra asked with a smirk on her face.
They arrived at the church in the nick of time. They both noticed all of the cars in the church parking lot which meant that all parties where there except for Jamal’s car which wasn’t like him because he’s always on time. Not seeing his car made Alandra feel unsteady and nervous. Rachael noticed the look of concern on her cousin’s face and reassured her not to worry. That man loves you with all of his heart and for the life of me I don’t know why. Alandra just smiled and said you’re right. He’s probably stuck in traffic or he could’ve had car trouble and got a ride here, so don’t worry yourself alright.
Pastor Symmonette was there to greet all of those whom were going to be apart of the wedding plan and looked towards the door as Alandra and Rachael was walking in. He welcomed them both and asked Alandra how was she doing this evening. Oh I’m doing just fine pastor. Well that’s good to know. Thanking the lord for our daily blessings are we? Hello sister Rachael how are you doing this evening? I’m doing just fine sir,and yourself. I’m just ready to get this ceremony on it’s way because I have an important schedule to met later on this evening.
The pastor let out a little chuckle because he knew that Rachael had to be referring to a young gentleman caller. Well as soon as all of the parties are here we can get this ceremony rolling. I haven’t seen the groom as of yet. Is he gonna be here at a later time? I’m sure he’ll be here any minute now said Alandra. Sir just give him a few more minutes. Alright sister Alandra I will do just that, then he turned to walk away but decided to come back and told Rachael that he would love to see more of her in church sometimes as he held her hands in his. I’ll see what I can do Pastor
said Rachael.
Mrs. Cunningham came rushing through the church doors looking for her niece and daughter. When she noticed Alandra and Rachael standing near the alter talking to the bride maids, she motion for their attention. Alandra and Rachael both went to her and there was this strange look on her aunt Maybelle’s face. Then suddenly that’s when the girls knew that something was terribly wrong and something bad had to have happen. Alandra honey I hate to be the one to tell you this but Jamal has been in a car accident, he was rushed over to Jackson Memorial Hospital in an Helicopter. Sweetheart he’s listed to be in critical condition. You need to get over there as soon as possible.
Come on Alandra I’ll drive you over there. Good Rachael baby, you go right ahead. I’ll stay here and inform Pastor Symmonette of what’s taken place. I’ll meet the both of you over there as soon as I can. Now go! Alandra quickly grabbed her and Rachael’s purse and headed out the church to get to the emergency room. When they entered the emergency room she saw Jamal’s parents Mr and Mrs Jefferson standing in the hallway talking to the doctor. She watched Mrs Jefferson fall back into her husband’s arm hugging him tight softly crying, as he’s gently stroking her back. Alandra stopped dead in her tracks afraid to take another step as she quietly said a prayer asking the lord to please let Jamal be alright.
As Mr Jefferson was shaking the doctor’s hand thanking him for everything that he could have possibly done for his son, he saw Alandra standing down the hall and he and his wife went to tell her the bad news. Hello Mr and Mrs Jefferson. Please tell me that Jamal is gonna be alright
said Alandra. Alandra sweetheart I’m afraid that I can’t tell you that. Our son has been in a tragic car accident which left him brain dead and there’s no way of him making it out alive. I’m sorry to have to tell you since so soon before the wedding honey. Rachael was standing right beside Alandra when she screamed out asking the lord Why God. Why!
Then she fainted.
Doctor Jacobs gave Alandra a sedative to calm her down and placed her in a room in the hospital to rest. When she had awaken she saw her Mother’s twin sister, Rachael, Mr and Mrs Jefferson standing around her bedside. Baby I’m here for you said Mrs Cunningham. You have to be strong sweetheart. Doctor Jacobs reentered the room and motion for the parents to step outside with him for a few seconds because he needed to talk with them. Reality hit Alandra like a lightning bolt when she realized that she and Jamal will never be able to exchange their wedding vows to one another which made her even more depressed and she asked if she could please be alone.
After leaving the hospital Alandra was told by Jamal’s parents that their son was an organ donor and that If anything was to happen to him it was his wish to have them donated. Alandra understood because that was just like Jamal to want and help anyone he possibly could. That was one of the reason why she loved him so much. Jamal was a loving and giving person. She hugged them both. Thank Mr and Mrs Jefferson for everything that you’ve done to help prepare for the wedding. I need to get in touch with the church to let them know that there won’t be a wedding. No sweetheart me and my husband will do that alright. You just go and get yourself some rest. Alandra hugged them both once again and said goodnight.
That following week Alandra sat in the front row of the same church that she and her fiancé were gonna exchange their wedding vows. Sitting on her left was Brandon, Jamal’s best friend as well as the best man. As Pastor Symmenette finish saying the daily prayer he introduce Brandon to the congregation of the church to give the eulogy. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room while the funeral took place. When the time arose for all members to view the body of the dead, everyone gave their condolences to Alandra and Mr and Mrs Jefferson. Rachael was right there to give her cousin her condolences as well.
Everyone got into their cars waiting for the immediate family members to get into their cars to follow them to the cemetery. One by one a long line of cars left the church in unison to the place where Jamal’s remains will be laid to rest. Once that was over Alandra asked all of her friends and family to leave her and she will meet them back at the car shortly. They all understood and left her be. When she noticed that she was alone. She removed a pink sheet of paper from her purse which had her wedding vow written on it.
As she looked up towards the blue skies she noticed this beautiful bird flying overhead and she just smiled. I know that that bird is a sign from you Jamal and I want you to know that I’m going to love you forever. You were the best friend any woman could ever hope for and more. Not only that, you were the man whom has given me his your heart whole heartedly and that’s something worth cherishing. I love you Jamal. Alandra reached over and took one single white rose from the boutique of flowers. Then she laid the pink sheet of paper along with the single rose and placed it gently on top of the casket. She then walked away knowing that she will never be able to have Jamal’s heart ever again.
