Mona waking up in the morning

Mona could barely lift her eyelids as the loud sounds beating against her windowpane awakened her. She thought it was rain but wasn’t quite sure, so she flung back the covers from her head and slowly dragged herself out of bed. As she gently tapped one toe at a time against the hard cold floor, she let out a low squeal.

Brrrr … that is so cold! she said in a low grumble.

She hurriedly put her other foot on the floor and quickly tiptoed over to the window. She was being very careful not to touch her whole foot on the cold wooden floor. Sure enough, as she opened the curtains, she saw the rain coming down in what seemed to be little pails.

Ohhh, I don’t feel like going to school today! she exclaimed. My umbrella won’t even stay open, and those shabby old rain boots of mine do nothing but soak up water.

She sat with her nose up against the window as she stared at the rain. Soon she heard her mom’s footsteps rapidly coming down the hallway toward her room. The movements of her mom’s shoes on the wood made her forget about the rain outside her window. She looked toward the door as she ran quickly to her bed and saw the doorknob turning. She sat on the bed Indian-style, pulling the covers closer to her chin as her mother entered the bedroom.

It’s raining, Mona, her mother said as she entered the room.

She glanced at what appeared to be a sleepy Mona in bed and walked toward the closet. She flung the closet door open as she turned her head back and stared at the window.

We need to get an early start, Mother said in a low voice. You’ll have to walk to school today because we have no car. Dad took the car to the shop for repairs.

Mona’s mom was tall and thin with dark-brown hair that made thick ringlets all over her head. Whenever they were out together, people would comment that Mona was the spitting image of her mom. Mona didn’t think that was entirely true because whenever she looked in a mirror, she only saw the freckles she had all over her face, and her mom had not one!

Did you hear me? she asked as she turned her head back to see the frown lines of dissatisfaction on Mona’s forehead.

It’s raining, said Mom to Mona again as she walked past her bed to Mona’s closet. She didn’t think that she had heard her the first time because she sat on the bed, motionless, with her eyes still closed.

As she stopped in front of Mona’s closet, she frowned and started pulling out clothes.
