CHAPTER ONE
John was forty years old today. He had decided to take the day off to celebrate his birthday. He had just had a couple of drinks at the local lounge. Now he was heading home, to his wife and three kids. He had been downtown all day and now it was getting dark. He walked pass an old man, sitting on the corner, on an old wooden box. The old man had a small cup of seven pencils. John looked at the old man and the old man looked at John and said would you like to buy a pencil? John said no thank you. The old man said just one please sir I am hungry and haven’t eaten all day. John said how much are they? One dollar said the old man. John pulled out his money and gave the old man a ten dollar bill. The old man gave John all seven of the pencils, John said that’s alright. The old man said take the pencils, you bought them. John said sell them again. The old man said I can’t it doesn’t work that way, you bought them and you must take them. John said thank you and took the pencils. Use them wisely said the old man. John turned to look at the old man but he was gone.
John was shocked, then he looked at the pencils. There was seven of them, regular looking pencils, no. 2 pencils to be exact. John put them in his pocket and headed for home. Before John got two feet, he heard the old man’s voice say they are special pencils be careful, John looked around but he still didn’t see the old man, he was not anywhere to be found.
John had three children two boys and a girl. As he opened the door to his house he was greeted by his children with hugs and kisses, his wife waited patiently for her turn, when the kids had their feel of their father, she kissed her husband and asked where he had been, he told her he had been out celebrating his birthday. A surprise look came over her face, honey it’s your birthday and I forgot I am sorry, she said. John smiled and said it’s ok, then he kissed her and smiled again, he was feeling pretty good from the drinks he had and nothing was going to spoil his birthday.
After the children had been put to bed John and his wife Mary started to get ready for bed themselves. While taking off his pants John felt the pencils in his pocket, he took them out and put them on the desk next to the computer. The days past then weeks then months. John had all but forgot about the pencils. Then one night John needed something to write with, then he saw the pencils by the computer. He then reached over to get one of the pencils to use. John being an amateur writer he was working on one of his stories. He started to write with one of the pencils.
The character in his story was named Luke. John got a beer and a pack of cigarettes from his coat pockets and a lighter, and set down at the desk to write. John had chosen the name Luke in his story, because Luke was his brother’s name. The next sentence that John in tented to write was Luke left his house, but when John wrote the name Luke, his pencil took over writing what it wanted. John couldn’t believe what he was seeing it was him holding the pencil but what he was writing wasn’t coming from him. He wanted to put the pencil down but for some reason he couldn’t.
When the pencil had finished writing, John felt that he could put the pencil down, he threw it across the room. John was scared he was puzzled as to what was going on, why wasn’t he able to put the pencil down. Then he through, what had the pencil had wrote.
John looked down at what the pencil wrote while he was holding it. It read this morning Luke Williams, died in a car accident on route 44, Luke Williams lost control of his
