As my best friend raced upstairs, I followed, lugging a heavy suitcase.
‘Come on, slow coach!’ Sarah, then 14, shouted.
At the top, a scrawny man with scruffy hair appeared from one of the bedrooms.
Sarah’s stepdad John, then 27.
‘Thanks for letting me stay,’ I said.
‘You’re part of the family now,’ he winked.
