    FOREWORD

As Chairman and CEO of a very dynamic Zambian bred company BUK TRUCK PARTS LTD, that started very small with capital of USD 10,000, 16 years ago and now in the middle enterprise bracket in Zambia, It is my privilege and honor to foreword this message on Mr. Chitibwi Isaac Lucky’s first book and an excellent attempt to address some of the issues why as Zambia our economy is still largely owned and controlled by foreign enterprise and also his attempt to educate us to break the negative mindset that most of us Zambians harbor towards business and our personal economic growth. The book is insightful, bringing out our history, culture and where we stand right now as a nation.

Zambia can only grow to a middle income group and beyond if only we encourage one another to think positively on free and conscious capitalism.

Enjoy reading this book and God richly bless you.

    INTRODUCTION

UNLOCKING AFRICA’S POTENTIAL is a book which focuses on the 3Cs of David Livingstone and these are CHRISTIANITY, COMMERCE and CIVILIZATION. This book tackles pertinent issues which affects the African people, issues of race, intelligence and entrepreneurship.

David Livingstone, who was a slave trade abolitionist, an explorer, a doctor and a clergy man, spent his latter life fighting for a way in which slavery could be ended, by seeking a short route to the sea which could be used to establish legitimate trade between Africa and the west.

Having been compelled by a Christian heart to go and spread the gospel in Africa, he discovered that the task was not an easy one after being confronted with the lack of industrialization and civilization. He gave his whole life to ensure that he contributes to the betterment of Africans. He died like a fugitive with no family, but he died in the line of battle, and he died while praying. This book talks about courage, hard work and intelligence. It also addresses myths about the black race and Africans. I strongly believe that the lessons learnt from Dr Livingstone’s life can be applied in today’s generation to reduce high poverty levels currently faced in Africa.

Enjoy this well researched and prolific book which marries the 19th century with the 21st century. I strongly believe that the 19th century was a golden generation which paved way for a lot of good things and sadly the bad things that we experience today. Learn all you can and experience all you can.

    Remember, Applied Knowledge is power.

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to my God and saviour Jesus in whom I live and have my being. Also great thanks go to my family, from whom I draw my strength; my dear friends, I love you all; and above all to the man whose life changed history as we know it: Dr David Livingstone, a man whom I see as a martyr for all Africans. His wife Mary Moffat Livingstone who died here in Africa and all his descendants, may the Lord bless them greatly.

    PART 1

    INTRODUCTION

    CHAPTER 1

    Our Heritage-Something to Celebrate

Living in our generation is something every young person should be excited about. We have a lot to celebrate and thank God for; firstly, we have inherited such a great land like no other on the face of this earth. Our forefathers fought for us and defeated the oppressors so that we can live in a free land. And isn’t it an amazing thing that we are here now living in a free land?

    A heritage of Freedom

Looking at the number of economic challenges we are facing, someone may ask if we are truly free. I say to such a one, absolutely! It is actually an abominable thing to utter and a big insult to our forefathers, many who didn’t survive the struggle and offered their blood so that you and I can be able to move about and travel about freely. We can go to any hospital we want provided we have the capacity, we can eat, dress and above all we have a voice of choice; you and I can choose who leads us or not, we choose who sits on the Zambian throne. We are a free land and we should be happy that we are beneficiaries of that. We have also inherited courage from our fathers, courage to conquer; we have also inherited a true gift of solving problems amicably and peacefully. We are living in this land today because our forefathers and parents are not and were not hostile towards each other, though they had so many differences amongst themselves they were patient towards each other. That is a heritage we should be proud of and celebrate.

A heritage of a maturing democracy

We have a heritage of a maturing democracy. We can boast of having one of the best democracies in Africa, it is not as old as America’s democracy for example, but it is a growing democracy, a pride of Africa and the world. What a heritage! Thank God our forefathers fought hard to make sure that we enjoy this great heritage. There is a thin line between anarchy and harmony, and if a country is not careful and tolerant, it will spin into a bloody civil war. Our parents knew how to read times to put up a fight as well as retaliate and allow the will of the people to prevail; it is this heritage that has enabled us to change five different heads of state in a period of 50 years, without bloodshed. Am I saying we haven’t had bad times and scary moments? Of course not, we have had a share of our bad days, but like Nelson Mandela rightly put it I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid but he who conquers that fear. So we can safely say we are courageous and that we are a great nation and our fathers have taught us the power of the ballot. Yes it is our fathers and mothers who have taught us that we can change a government at the right time just by slotting a paper in a ballot box. We don’t need guns and bombs to kick out a failed government; our forefathers taught us the power of the ballot and not the power of the bullet. So if we don’t like you, we kick you out through the ballot. What a heritage!

    A heritage of hospitality

Zambia has one of the warmest people, and people from all walks of life have attested to this. Zambia is just unique; the people in our land are just hospitable, loving and so friendly. We do not always agree on everything but the fact is that we are hospitable and friendly people. Zambia is probably one of the few countries in the world where a foreigner can easily settle start up a business and grow into a billionaire just like that. I have actually had a lot of friends from foreign countries who cried when it was time to leave this beautiful land and return to their home country. Some of them have come here for good and they don’t think of going back. Why? Because we are so warm and we are a good and loving people. Having travelled around
