    Prologue

T he tragedy was in the inability to see the world through the excitement of a video game. The drama went away when you shut off the video game. No one really paid the price for the mistakes or the extra points you got. Do overs where not an option in this life. Picking up the pace, well that was just the way it was, not an option. Not being on your game, so to speak, was unthinkable. Friends tragically died and lives were crushed, even with good intentions, but every once in a while out of the abyss comes beauty, love and wonder that, if missed, would never have been known and thus more tragic in the end.

Losing my life did not scare me near as much as losing my honor. Foolish maybe, but I didn’t think that a life lived without honor was really worth anything to its owner or those he served. This amazingly was not a common thought. I might wish it differently, the idea of changing it was just not something I could figure out how to do. Live as if you matter. As if someone special will remember your actions, and they are worth your best. Knowing that when you think back at that moment, you can feel that feeling again and it always makes you smile. Feel with the passion of the wind and the sun and love every day that you can. It’s worth it. When you never let the passion of life personally touch you it’s like missing everything just so you could escape the pain and the passion that defines you. Cutting off your own arm so that the rest of your body can live more comfortably in the pain of emptiness. Well here I am, there are no take backs and no do overs. I wonder what path God has planned for the planned man? What does the world have planned for the art of perfecting God’s perfection. The Great Spirit will guide me to the answers I seek.

    One 1.jpg

T he villagers muddled through. They lived their lives in ten-year sequences, telling the same gossip, for until fresh meat came for the carving. To sacrifice for them so that others could live and feel alive without the risk of the pain that went with really living. I couldn’t fail, otherwise they have all died in vain.

Margo must have thought so too, because she sent her men to find me. My choices were few and far between. Cale knew I would return for him. I couldn’t do that with Captain Margo Ardelovic waiting in the wings. I couldn’t let Margo get her hands on Cale. I needed to bide my time until I could find the help that I needed. They beat him bad and they shot him. Time was limited because he needed help now. He was old but not too old, besides he was all I had and I loved him. Why Margo hated him was something of a mystery, but she wasn’t going to be happy until he was dead. I think it was because of me. Cale wasn’t any great father, but he was the only one I was going to get, so I would do whatever I could to get him to safety.

As the helicopter came closer to the sand, Daniel saw it. The portable phone pack that would get them the help they needed. He waited in the crevices with his curly sand colored mop hiding him while he waited until the copter moved down the beach. Hoping Margo didn’t see the phone pack.

I know that you don’t know me but Cale Gustoff said you would help me. The boy was close to crying now. Please help me Mr. Bear. Cale said you would and he is real sick. Captain Ambrose Bear McAlister didn’t know who was calling, but he knew Cale Gustoff. The man saved his life twice in two countries. Stay by Cale and I will come get you. The boy wiped his eyes. Margo is here, please hurry! Bear knew who that was. Margo was Cale’s crazy ex-wife. For all Cale’s good qualities, his taste in women was horrible. Where are you and what is your name? Bear wasn’t sure who the boy was, but if he was helping Cale he was someone, because Cale wasn’t the daddy type. Besides being too old, he was a scientist steeped in work and mystery.

Cale calls me boy or Daniel, because he says that I am the judgment of man. Cale is my father. He takes care of me. He is bleeding badly. Bear was trying to keep the boy calm and on the phone so he could get a location. Daniel don’t hang up I need to locate your signal. I have Flyboy coming now to get you. It will only be a few hours, try to hang on. Bear was trying to connect with the office so that he could give them a location. Daniel where on his body is Cale bleeding, where has he been shot? Daniel went to look closely at Cale’s old body lying in the sand on the cave floor. He was scared, because Cale wasn’t moving. Please hurry, his arm and his chest, he was shot once but her guards beat him up. Margo hates him and she’s mean. We are in a cave. My horse is in the rocks but we have to hide because of Margo.

Flyboy do you read? Cale and the boy are at these coordinates I am sending now. It’s bad, chest and arm, she got him good this time. Flyboy came over the air He never could lay off the crazy bitches. Bear had to agree. The boy says they are in a cave. Look for the horse and make it quick. Flyboy came back ten four, flying dark good buddy. Over and out.

    Washington

There was a moment in time when Bear knew without any doubt in his mind that he would not have lived without the skills that Cale brought to the table. He was the whole nine yards, as it were. Cale took out the bullets, made the bad press go away, along with the Russians and he could make the Colonel forget any indiscretion of the soldiers, if there was one, over a good double blended whiskey.

Now Cale was almost dead and asking favors from the man that owed his life to him. Cale was as old as the hills, hell, Bear wasn’t sure he wasn’t the Colonel’s senior.

Here was a boy no more than twelve that was holding surgeons at gun point until Bear showed up to give the okay. This was a scene right out of sci-fi. Daniel is that you? The boy was shaking and holding a loaded .38 automatic directly at his balls, as he crouched down by the back wall of the emergency room, which was extremely uncomfortable. He’s not going to die right? This boy was a blonde beige duplicate of a young Cale. Daniel, I know that if you don’t put the gun down, he might. No one wants to look at Cale, because they are afraid that you are going to shoot them. The boy looked up only once. Cale told me to trust only Bear. He said that I should ask for the Colonel and Bear McAlister. I’m not putting this gun down without Bear’s confirm. Cale said so. He said that was the only way I would be safe. Bear was so confused because he couldn’t understand what this was about. Daniel, I am Bear McAlister. I am here to tell you you’re safe. I need to see Cale’s okay. Isn’t that what you want too? Daniel climbed slowly up the wall from the floor to stand just outside of arms reach, in front of Bear. ID is no good. Cale said that you would know the code and your last mission. What are those two things? Bear was impressed, but not without concern.

Behind the door was the Colonel Little Sparrow and Norway young man, now drop the weapon so we can treat this soldier and my friend. The boy was actively relieved and crying Please help Cale. I have to make sure he is okay. He gave Bear the gun and stood there waiting to be punished for crying. I understand that crying solves nothing, but I just couldn’t control my emotions. I will take my punishment now. Bear was shocked. Daniel you must understand that Cale needs to heal. You will be coming home with me for now until Cale is okay to take you home. The boy just stood there in front of Bear as if he was waiting for death. Cale told you that I wouldn’t hurt you? The boy stared at him Cale said that I would get only from you what I deserve. I am ready. Bear had to ask Daniel did you do this to Cale? Daniel stood there looking as if he was seeing his death. Bear McAlister, I dragged him into the cave so that Captain Margo wouldn’t take me away and kill Cale. I deserve whatever you wish to give. I needed Cale for my survival and now he is here. Bear didn’t think this kid was okay. The trauma was obviously too much. He would take the boy home with him and keep him safe until he could get answers from Cale and if this kid wasn’t kidding, they had better be good. What the hell was this tortured child doing with a sex crazed, drunken scientist like Cale?

T he Colonel looked at Bear and gave him the nod. Once the gun was released to Bear, the nurses ran to get Cale the help he needed and the boy be damned. Shoving him this way and that until the Colonel motioned for him to go with them to the waiting room. The Colonel and Bear bought the kid dinner and watched him eat three meals and two desserts without stopping. Daniel what were you doing in Greece? He kept up the fork and spoon as if it was a shovel. Cale was hiding from Margo. She wanted to steal me. She said I could rule the world. Margo is bad! Daniel had met Margo, she was a captain all right but she would sell her soul to the highest bidder if he was test one. Bear knew that this is whom he was speaking to. He didn’t tell the Colonel though, he would have taken the boy into custody and turned him into a science project immediately. That is why Cale told him to call Bear. How old are you Daniel? Test one looked up at Bear I am eight years old. You are not a Bear. Is that an American name for a man? Bear just looked at him with great concentration I am a Cheyenne Indian, this is my American name to those that know me. Some will call me Ambrose; this is my Irish name as Laird in Ireland. Do you understand?

Daniel was unsure as to how to proceed, he just shrugged Is Cale safe now? Daniel asked without further thought. Bear looked at him and just said, You tell me? Daniel stated that his heart rate was strong but his blood count was low, given the blood that he lost and he was unsure of the results. Bear lowered his head and knew immediately this was the result of an incubator baby, or one of those crazy military experiments for new drugs they were looking to create for strengthened or artificial DNA strands. Genetic modifications for future use on soldiers, this was a test soldier, a living specimen designed for combat and intelligence warfare.

Eight years old, scared and his intelligence was through the roof. Bear saw this like a nightmare that he and his wife had just left behind them 10 years earlier. Bear needed to make a call. He dialed the number to home wondering how he would describe the child he wanted to bring home to his children. What would Margie do? Would she be so protective and scared that she would shun the boy? On the other hand, would she be angry because Bear questioned her? He would have to wait and see, but he wasn’t leaving this poor soul here at the hospital to be taken into custody. Cale knew that, and that is why he chose Bear. That is the only thing that Bear could think of. He would never let Cale down, not now and not ever.

Bear had been a marine since he was eighteen years old and even though he was not active now, he often did work for the government. He had promised his family he was retired from active duty and he wasn’t going back on his word, but he could work the paper from this side of the world and see what Cale was doing and how the kid was connected to all of this.

Cale was a lab rat and a military expert. What moron would leave a child in his care would be his first question, except the kid had Cale’s hair and Cale’s face.

Marie Jackson saw Bear and the Colonel getting ready to leave with the boy. She stood in the doorway and shook her head with her arms crossed. You know I can’t let you do that! I thought we were friends. Are you trying to get me fired? Marie wasn’t even going to look at Bear right now. She waved a finger at the Colonel when he started to speak. I give you respect and I honor your position and you know what that old fool will do without the proper release. Bear thought this was worth the trip alone! He gave Marie Jackson a huge smile and she wiggled her finger in his face. I am tired and getting older by the minute and this is the last time! The Colonel smiled and said Marie, my lovely Marie, dinner and theater for you and your mate on me. I appreciate this! Marie was a slender beautiful black woman and head nurse on the trauma floor for as long as either of them could remember. She did favors for them when necessary, because otherwise the protocol would be that the child would stay at the hospital for a full psychological and physical work up with blood work. They weren’t sure that wouldn’t reveal too much right now. He would be used for research and taken to live at an institution until they no longer had use for him.

When they were finished and the blood work was not completed, Bear left as quickly as he could get Flyboy to the roof pad. As they were leaving, the Colonel gave Bear a hug and said Keep him close until I can find out more. Bear nodded his agreement and got on the helicopter, then to the airport to catch a plane, and home. "Flyboy, get us to Winter Village please. Dark cover, I’ll pay the price. He gave a half salute and they were off. Daniel was wrapped in a flight suit that was three times too big for him, but they didn’t have time to find him clothes. It was more important that he get away from the hospital for right now. This child needed time. Maybe with Bear’s family the boy could calm down and get some answers. Bear McAlister had a compound made up of several outbuildings and his log home on the Indian Nation’s reservation outskirts in Wyoming. He was far enough out to have peace and quiet. He could see visitors coming and visitors from the reservation were always welcome. It was different from his Ireland home and different from his Ireland and Norway homes, but the reservation was where he grew up, so it was where he felt closest to his roots.

The boy was clearly exhausted, but when they hovered over the landing area at Bear’s Wyoming home, he woke Daniel and got him strapped into the tandem harness because landing was out of the question. Flying dark meant that Flyboy was off the radar and was not even supposed to be there, let alone landing at someone’s house. Bear had done this many times and he was not concerned, but he wanted to get out the door before the boy was scared and started to struggle.

Daniel was excited when they jumped out of the helicopter, but he didn’t have time to react before they were on the ground. His face said it all, it was the rollercoaster face and then the ‘let’s do it again’ face. Bear just laughed to see it. All the people came out to greet Bear and tell him to come in for dinner. Daniel hid behind Bear until he was told it was safe and he should come out. Bear took his hand after getting the harness off, hanging the parachute to dry in the shed, they went in to meet Bear’s family, all the while Bear was explaining to Daniel that this was his family and he should try to get along with them and learn from them. Hawk, White Dove, Bear’s sister and brother-in-law and Michael, Margie’s brother and Regna whom they adopted from Norway were all there along with his and Margie’s kids; Angelina, Russell, Kathleen and Ambrose, the twins, and Julius, the baby. Margie had started to serve beef stew and fresh biscuits when Bear came in the house with Daniel. Everyone stopped what they were doing to be introduced.

Daniel, over whelmed and not sure of what to say or how to proceed, just looked scared. Bear looked at Margie for help. She smiled Daniel, I am Margie, Bear’s wife and these are our children. Why don’t you come over here and meet everyone. Daniel looked at Bear for approval. Bear just nodded. Margie pointed to her children one at a time. Margie hated the idea of overwhelming him but she kept going introducing the adults’, glad that the rest of the family was not coming over today. Children it is time to wash for dinner, please take Daniel and show him what to do! By his side Angelina made a grab for Daniel’s hand just as Russell was stomping his feet because he wanted Daniel to come with him. Daniel, it was clear was not accustom to being with this many people. Bear looked at the horror on his face. Angelina and Russell take Ambrose and Kathleen to wash. Daniel, please come with me. Daniel went to stand by Bear immediately while the other children did as they were told. Bear took Daniel to his new study, recently added to the original building because of all the additional people the house now needed to accommodate. He told Daniel to sit down so that they could have a talk. Daniel, when you are with Cale who else lives with you? Daniel just shrugged at first then he thought about who was at the center. The staff comes to clean and pick up the garbage and Emma cleans up and makes our dinner before she goes home. Daniel thought that sounded like people. Bear went on asking questions about how Cale and Daniel lived. He knew it was getting late and he didn’t wish to hold up dinner. Daniel, when you are here the children will want to play with you and show you how they do things. I would like you to play with them too. It will be different at first, but you will learn new things and then you can make more choices about what? Red Bird will come tomorrow to give you some tests, to see where to put you in school. When you are with her here and at school, you will listen to what she tells you to do and do it without a problem, because she is here to help you. Do you understand? Daniel looked at him. Will I be safe? Bear knew there was more to this since he had been confined to an institution setting. I will make you safe and the people that I have around you will keep you safe. You will depend on them if you are afraid. Later, I want you to tell me why you would not be safe and what Cale has told you about this, but now it is time we go eat. Bear took Daniel with him and showed him what was expected when he was told to ‘wash up for dinner, there was no telling what the boy knew.

Everyone was sitting, waiting for Bear and Daniel to come in for dinner. There was a large pot of beef stew, homemade biscuits and warm cider. As everyone sat, grace was said and then evening meal conversation was on, with everyone competing to be next in line telling everyone what had happen, since last they spoke. Daniel tried to eat, listen, and follow what each person was saying and the responses they were receiving. It seemed odd to him what they found of interest and even the food was odd. The tastes were good, but so different that everything was too much to take in at once. He couldn’t decide if it was wonderful or horrifying. When it finally came around to him, everyone waited to see what he had to say. Daniel kept his head down, unsure of how to proceed. Margie seemed to understand and she filled in some of the blanks. Everyone, we have forgotten to tell you all about our guest. This is Daniel. He is here because his father is in the hospital and Daniel needed a safe place to stay. His father is a friend of Bear’s. Then Margie turned to address the children, Daddy has asked us to include Daniel in our daily events so he gets the hang of this. I will, of course, expect complete cooperation with a glad heart, but I really didn’t even need to say that did I Angelina? Angelina gave a half smile and then dipped her head to one side and in a coy and knowing glance she said But of course mother.
