Kankakee County Tales of Horror - Jesse Rodriguez

    THE DEER HUNTER

On a breezy August afternoon, John went hunting, as he did every Friday after work, the weekend would bring much joy and relaxation, for this was the day after his retirement. And no better place to hunt, than the woods of St. Anne. A beautiful wooded village, with a large river running through it, with plenty of deer in the area, peace and quiet was not hard to find in St. Anne, the perfect getaway for a picnic or fishing. Sunny afternoons brought many anglers to the shores of this big river. Although, it is not the best place to be, when the sun goes down, but perfect hunting during the daylight hours. St. Anne was also the home of the mutant deer that was often seen at night, by local hunters. This was a local legend, seen by late night hunters that were lucky to have made it out alive to tell about it. For you see, when night falls in St. Anne, you had better be indoors. John had never seen this mutant deer, so he did not believe this tale of scared people; tonight he was not going home, until he got a deer. John found a nice clearing where the moonlight hit the ground and illuminated the area. This was a great spot for any wandering deer that might walk across this area.

A perfect shot was waiting for any hunter who could catch a deer off guard on this moonlit area. John spent close to three hours and still no sign of a deer, he decided to call it a night, and then, there it was, just as described, out of nowhere the mutant deer arrived on the moonlit field, this must be him, John thought, he stood tall and firm almost like a bronze statue. The horns were blood red, his eyes appeared to look like fiery coals, with some sort of green slime dripping from its mouth, and nostrils, and to my amazement, John described, that it had many arrows stuck in its body, and what appeared to be bullet holes, with this green mucous dripping out of them. The teeth were like that of a shark, razor sharp and pointed straight down and over his bottom lip. Yet he was not even in pain, he walked upright as if nothing was wrong with it. This mutant deer must have been shot many times by hunters, yet it was still alive. What would bring it down? Then it happened, John sneezed, this beast looked dead into the eyes of John, a chill went up Johns spine, as he melted back into the bush he was hiding in. John was hoping the mutant deer would just go away, then in a split second, a rabbit jumped through a bush in front of this beast, and it took its eyes off of John, for a brief moment, then the mutant deer snatched the rabbit in mid air, as part of it fell to the ground, sliced in half from its razor sharp teeth no doubt, then it was gone. John headed back quickly for his truck, and away in a cloud of dust, as he sped away, thinking how lucky he might have been, that the taste of rabbit must have been, what saved his life, on that dark eerie night in St. Anne. John had now joined the list of hunters in the area that had seen the mutant deer but could not convince anyone to believe them. Every now and then if you catch John in the right mood he’ll tell you about that eerie night in St. Anne.

    THE ZOMBIES OF MOUND GROVE

Let me tell you about an ancient legend that surrounds a cemetery in Kankakee. It happened long ago when a warlock cast a spell, to resurrect his dead wife, you see, before it was a cemetery, it was home to a man who practiced black magic, he and his wife lived here in a small one room cabin, they were madly in love with each other, and had no friends or family. One day his wife became sick and died, the loss was too much for him, then on the night of June 6TH, 1906, he decided to resurrect her dead body. She was buried in the backyard of the home, as it was customary in these times. This made it easy for him to begin his ritual, so the warlock began to resurrect his dead wife, he cast the spell over her gravestone, but at that very moment the towns people were headed to his cabin, they were sick of this black magic, and decided to rid their town of this evil. They burned his house, and then stoned him to death, but not before he finished his ritual.

The spell was cast, but it was too late for the warlock, they had killed him. Many years went by, and now the site where the spell was cast, is now a cemetery. It is said, that every June 6TH, at midnight, the spell resurrects the dead. This cemetery comes to life. Today major streets and highways surround this cemetery, so if like you may view the dead from your vehicle, if you dare to come out on this night that is. If you can’t see anything, please
