    In Memory of

    Edgar Javier Martinez

    1983-2005

To God; thank you Lord for giving me the opportunity to share my experience with others.

To you, Edgar, my dear son.

To my husband, Victor, and my children Karina and Victor Manuel Jr. as well as Robert, Karina’s husband, and Rachel, Victor’s wife.

To Edgar Jaime and Misty Marie, who have been there day after day supporting me and helping me keep my memories alive.

To my grandchildren whom I love dearly.

    Also to my mom Odilia.

To my dad who is in heaven with my son.

    To Edgar’s deceased grandparents.

To my sister, Hilda, and brothers Ernest, Javier, and Alfonso.

A special dedication to some dear friends who helped me through this grief, particularly my friend Aurora who has kept up with me day after day making sure that my faith did not fall apart.

To Nori Baker, Edgar’s school counselor and a goodfriend.

    To Edgar’s goodfriends.

To Brother Carlos Rubio who loved Edgar dearly and stood beside him through his trials and tribulations.

To Dr. Jorge Cuellar who always has Edgar present in his heart and continues to work with the troubled youth.

To the group who wrote a song for my son, It’s Gonna Be Alright, Kilatribe, thank you.

To all of my dear students who, in some way or another, allowed me to teach or counsel them through my years as an educator.

To all parents: Through this book, I would like you to realize that our children are borrowed from the Lord. Always live every day as if there will be no tomorrow.

Love them, do not give up. If they are having difficult times, support them, and open your arms and protect them.

Through my experience, I have had all kinds of feelings: guilt, denial, anger, love, and finally acceptance. The only thing I can assure that I do not have is regret. I gave my son my heart—what else could I give?

There is one thing that has kept me sane. I am a very privileged woman whom God chose to speak to. When I remember this, I tell myself that God is a God of forgiveness, and every person on earth has a chance to be by his side. If you love him, trust him, and have him in your heart, you will be forgiven. How much happier can Edgar be—no more pain.

This book is made with heart, and the sole purpose is to help others know that God loves us all. Many young people do not feel that they can be forgiven. We are all worthy.

The Lord came to Edgar and talked to him—he was a chosen soul. The mystery in Edgar’s life is over. I finally got the message; he had a mission here on earth, and now he has one in heaven.

    With love,

    Odilia Martinez

    Introduction

August 13, 1983 was a beautiful morning for my family.

At 8:50 AM in Monterrey, Mexico, my beautiful baby was born.

His name was Edgar Javier Martinez. His parents were Odilia and Victor.

Edgar grew up with all of our love. His oldest sister, Karina, and brother Victor were my other two loves. What a blessing to have Edgar among us!

Ten days later, Edgar was rushed to the hospital. The doctors said that he had a problem with his glands. After running laboratory tests, they found that he was allergic to the formula. I changed it like three times before he could actually tolerate any kind of milk.

As my child grew, he had serious problems with pain in his ears. He would always complain about them. Doctors always said it was an ear infection, and he would cry consistently. Edgar was such a quiet child. You could read through his beautiful eyes. He was always close to me, and if I were not there, he would stick
