    Amazon Reviewer

This is a charming and entertaining book. That its author is nine years old also makes it a splendid book. It is imaginative in its plotting, its creation of the world for Freeze-Land, and in its portrait of its brave young heroine and narrator. I hope that Huda Ayaz will keep on writing.

Richard B. Bernstein, author of The Founding Fathers Revolutionized and professor the City College of New York

Huda Ayaz writes at a level far beyond her years. In the first chapter of her novel Freeze-Land: A New Beginning is the statement: If you have this book in your hand, that means you bought your ticket for a wild ride. And indeed, Huda’s first novel was a wild ride and a real page-turner.

William Greenleaf, author of The Tartarus Incident

"Not only do teachers impart knowledge to their students, but they also gain knowledge from them in turn. With the young and talented Huda Ayaz, this is truly the case…Her remarkable giftedness and unique style have left an impression not only on my memory, but also my heart. With such a bright future ahead of this young scholar, the sky is the limit! Huda, I wish you a lifetime of happiness and many more successes."

    Prologue

Arghh! Sisinarta growled. Her eyebrows were furrowed, and her hands were on her forehead in frusturation. She couldn’t believe her favorite son had lost to that little girl. Forliek! Oh, why did you fail? she thought hopelessly. Forliek was the only son she had who was like the children’s father—their vicious father, who was the only living hawk Morulta who could duplicate himself as many times as he wanted.

Sisinarta had gone to several future-speakers, but they all said the same thing: There is success in your life. There is an army … a huge army.

Sisinarta growled, frustrated. They had said the same thing before. Forliek set out to Freeze-Land with an army, but there was no success! Sisinarta thought. She paced her grand, vast throne room, where her many children came for meetings. Sisinarta froze. That was it! Her children! All of them together had grown enough to learn how to kill and conquer. They were an army—together! She immediately growled happily and called all her children in for a meeting.

They all heard her excited growl and rushed to her immediately. Each of her sons and daughters had the same thought: She has to pick me now! All the children were chatting excitedly to one another of how Mother had to pick them now; they had realized that Mother’s attitude was changing toward them.

But I rubbed her back last night. She said I had really soothed her, one child, Rinetta, said proudly. She beamed at her sister Arila’s anguished look of surprise.

You promised you’d stop giving her terrific back rubs! Arila cried accusingly.

"Arila, are we an evil family or not? We lie! It’s what evil ones do. At least pure evil ones," Rinetta said, looking Arila up and down in mock disgust.

The sisters quarreled, yelling rude insults at each other.

The same was happening among the other children. Some were wrestling each other, trying to prove who was stronger.

Even though Sisinarta admired her children’s anxious desire to find out who would go to Freeze-Land next, she had to make her announcement. Quiet! she yelled.

Her children fell silent, giving last glances to whomever they had been fighting with, and turned to their mother, each looking as menacing as possible.

Sisinarta laughed. You think I’m going to pick one of you, don’t you? Sisinarta asked.

The children nodded vigorously. Recognizing something odd in Sisinarta’s approach, the older ones nodded halfheartedly.

This war will be different, Sisinarta said.

    The elders winced.

I know it may seem like a horrible idea right now, but I know what I am doing! Every fortune-teller I have gone to has said that I need an army—a powerful army! I have many children. I am sure that we must combine forces. If you defeat the Freeziens and keep them down, we can rule Freeze-Land! But not only Freeze-Land, all planets!

The children cheered, but many were not convinced. They crossed their arms and yelled their objections.

I was going to do something amazing, Mother!

    Me too!

    Me three!

Mother, you’re more sensible than this!

Sisinarta grew irritated. What did I tell you? You’re just children! Slowly, she repeated, I know what I’m doing.

The children threw nervous glances at one another. Sisinarta talked that way only when she was about to grow so mad that she’d turn you into a butterfly. The children grimaced in disgust as they thought about becoming a cute butterfly—yuck.

We will start practicing for battle today. We won’t stop practicing until you are at full strength. I will also turn your siblings who became butterflies into Morultas. The more the better. We’ll need the biggest army there is, Sisinarta said,
