Thoughts of Love and Life
()
About this ebook
Thoughts of Love and Life is a collection of poetry that asks and perhaps answers questions about who and what we are. Written on subjects ranging from faith to folly, as well as from life to death, author Nancy Brookfield exhibits a questioning, restless mind with but one conviction: that mankind has meaning and can improve.
The spring green grass is growing now
and in warming winds it plays
It reaches toward the blue of the sky
and grows higher with each day
Then the heat of the sun will turn it gold
and the farmer will cut it down
The grain that he gathers from the fallen shafts
will go to the miller in town
And the miller will make the flour
and the baker will make the bread
The green grass serves his purpose
and lives though he is dead
Would that I could do so much
with this life of mine
And leave something behind to feed your souls
with the passing of my time
Nancy Brookfield
Nancy Brookfield was born into poverty in the last stages of the Great Depression but feels blessed that at a young age she was taught faith, compassion, and empathy. Today, she lives in her home state of California.

Thoughts of Love and Life - Nancy Brookfield
A Purpose
The spring green grass is growing now
and in warming winds it plays
It reaches toward the blue of the sky
and grows higher with each day
Then the heat of the sun will turn it gold
and the farmer will cut it down
The grain that he gathers from the fallen shafts
will go to the miller in town
And the miller will make the flour
and the baker will make the bread
The green grass serves his purpose
and lives though he is dead
Would that I could do so much
with this life of mine
And leave something behind to feed your souls
with the passing of my time
I Am
I am a poet a writer of rhymes
A listener of Chapel bells that chime
A collector of laughter of roses and ribbon
A seeker of sunshine a believer in heaven
A dreamer of dreams a million are mine
A chaser of moonbeams a taster of wine
A liver of life so simple to do
Since I have become a lover of you
All of the Above
Hope springs eternal
love is forever more
Happiness lies in the lilt of laughter
faith is an open door
Contentment is cradled in the bosom of knowledge
wisdom is rewarded each day
Beauty is captured in every moment
warmth in each sunlit ray
Peace is but understanding
joy is but letting go
And confidence comes just by living
and when all of the above you know
Hear the Horseman
Hear the Horseman he is coming
muffled hoof beats miles away
Before the approach becomes a drumming
fall upon your knees and pray
Before you see him top the hill
before the cadence crest
Place your life in God’s will
bare your soul to be blessed
Don’t try to flee you’ll be overtaken
don’t try to hide you will be found
But kneeling faith cannot be shaken
and where you pray is holy ground
And though in awesome form he appears
cape a’ flying sword in hand
He can only attack the heart that fears
against the believer he will not stand
And as retreat becomes his only course
in thunderous fury he gallops on
As you watch the beast and the horse
disappear somewhere into the dawn
Happiness
I bid you come set beside me take a rest
The search for happiness is such a foolish quest
For it does not on the horizon lie
The blue you see there is only sky
And it is not captured in the glint of gold
How could it be in a thing so cold
Nor is it among all the things you acquire
These things feed nothing but desire
It’s not hidden in the dependence of what others do
For as a gift happiness cannot be given to you
You could leave no stone unturned you could search on end
Not over the next hill not around the next bend
Not floating somewhere upon the open seas
Not hung among the many leaves on the trees
Though beauty may surround you and love and lovers be in abound
These wonders you must give their due but not as happiness found
So come set here beside me take a rest
This is when your chance will be at its best
That the prize of all prizes you will win
For it’s at peace that happiness comes out from within
Fantasy Land
I believe in King Arthur and Mickey Mouse
and creatures not stirring throughout the house
I believe in Fairy Godmothers and Wonderland
and little brick houses that always stand
I believe that all wishes on stars come true
in something old and new, borrowed and blue
I believe in crossing fingers and kissing Blarney Stones
in leprechaun’s gold and the wisdom of gnomes
And I really do believe there is a heaven hung above
but most of all I believe in your love
You Can
You can take from me my worldly wealth
you can take from me my time
You can live upon the love I give
and be nourished by my rhyme
You can soak up all my laughter
until it’s been replaced by tears
You can have the inner strength I feel
and leave me but the fears
You can walk beside me if you choose
or turn and walk away
You can leave me with but the black of night
and you may have the day
You can have the very thoughts I think
if they will serve you well
And if only one can be in heaven
then I will take the hell
You can reap the flowers
