About this ebook

Names of God
6) In Gods redemptive relation to man, various compound names of Jehovah are found which reveal Him as meeting every need of man from his lost state to the end. These compound names are: Jehovah- jireh, the Lord will provide (Gn.22:13-14). Jehovah-rapha, the Lord who healeth (Ex.15:26); the deeper healing of soul malady is implied. Jehovah-nissi, the Lord my banner (Ex.17:8-15). Jehovah- shalom, the Lord our peace, or the Lord send peace (Jud.6:24). Jehovah- tsidkenu, the Lord our righteousness (Jer.23:6). This name of Jehovah occurs in a prophecy concerning the future restoration and conversion of Israel. Jehovah- shammah, the Lord is present (Ezk.48:35). This name signifies Jehovahs abiding presence with His people. (Ex.33:14-15; 1Chr.16:27,33; Ps.6:11; 97:5; Mt.28:20; Heb.13:5). As Redeemer, emphasis is laid upon those attributes of Jehovah which the sin and salvation of man brings into exercise. These are: (a) His holiness (Lv.11:44-45; 19:1-2; 20:26; Hab.1:12-13); (b) His hatred and judgment of sin (Du.32:35-42, cp. Gn. 6:5-7; Ps.11:4-6; 66:18); and (c) His love for and redemption of sinners, but always righteously (Gn.3:21; 8:20-21; Ex.12:12-13; Lv.6:2-3; Is.53:5-6,10). Salvation by Jehovah apart from sacrifice is unknown in Scripture.

1Sam.1:3, Jehovah Sabaoth (Heb.) Lord of Hosts. Sabaoth means simply hosts, but with special reference to warfare or service. Jehovah is Lord of (warrior) hosts. It is the name, therefore, of the Lord in manifestation of power (Ps.24:10).
1) The word hosts in the Bible is related to (a) heavenly bodies (Gn.2:1; Neh.9:6; Is.40:26; (b) angles (Lk.2:13); (c) saints (Jos.5:15); and (d) sinners (Jud.4:2; 2Sm.10:16; 2Ki.5:1). As Lord of hosts God is able to marshal all these host to fulfill His purposes and to help His people.
And 2) this is the distinctive name of Deity for Israels help and comfort in the time of her division and failure (1Ki.18:15; 19:14; Is.1:9; 8:11-14; 9:13-19; 10:24-27, 31:4-5; Hag.2:4; Mal.3:16-17; Jms.5:4).
1) This revelation of God by His name is invariably made in connection with some particular need of His people. Mans true resource is God. Even human failure and sin but evoke new and fuller revelations of the divine fullness.
2) The O.T. Scriptures reveal the existence of a Supreme Being, the Creator of the universe and of man, the Source of all life and of all intelligence, who is to be worshipped and served by men and angels. This Supreme Being is One, in some manner not revealed in the O.T., is a unity in plurality.
3) The incarnation is intimated in the theophanies, or appearances of God in human form (e.g. Gn.18:1,13,17-22; 32:24-40), distinctly predicted in the promises connected with redemption (e.g. Gn.3:15) and with the Davidic Covenant. The revelation of Deity in the N.T. so illuminates that of the O.T. that the latter is seen to be, from Genesis to Malachi, the foreshadowing of the coming incarnation of God in Jesus the Christ.
4) The revelation of God to man is one of authority and of redemption. He requires righteousness from man, but saves the unrighteous through sacrifice; and in His redemptive dealings with man all the divine persons and attributes are brought into manifestations. The O.T. reveals the justice of God equally with His mercy, but never in opposition to His mercy. The flood, e.g. was an unspeakable mercy to unborn generations. From Gen. to Mal., He is revealed as the seeking God who has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, and who heaps up before the sinner every possible motive to persuade him to faith and obedience.
5) The O.T. men of faith, their God inspires reverence but never slavish fear; they exhaust the resources of language to express their love and adoration in view of His loving kindness and tender mercies.
6) Those passages which attribute to God bodily parts and human emotions (e.g. Ex.

Sis. Bennel Jackson

I praise God that He would use me for His glory. I am a senior citizen, mother of four, grand-mother of 13, and great grand-mother of 2. God is not through with me yet. Hallelujah! (Isa.46:4) Some of us aren’t able to afford a good study Bible or reference material, so this bk. was compiled for that very reason. To God be the glory! (Most italicized, bold, and underlined words are mine, save for Grk. and Heb. words, to emphasize what is said in the Holy Scriptures.) Photographers: Jo Ann Jackson, Teri Rogerwick, and myself. DEDICATION

I would like to personally express my thanks and gratitude to Dr. C. I. Scofield, Editor of the New Scofield Study Bible and the Editorial Committee of the New Edition, published by The Oxford University Press of New York, copyrighted 1967; for which I am eternally grateful. It has been my pleasure to study the Word of God from this Bible, read the Commentaries, and the abundance of information available. It is my prayer that all who look upon these pages will pursue the Lord our God as He has pursued us (mankind). Be blessed and may God be praised!

I’d like to thank Almighty God for the great cloud of witnesses that have gone on before us. For the privilege of becoming children and heirs to the promises of God. The God of Robert Lee Swanson, whom we affectionally called Big Papa; the God of Mary Ann Proctor, Big Mama; the God of Elois Evelyn Mack, (Mama) whom my children, nieces and nephews called Mama Lois. Thank You, Holy Father that You have made this line holy and set apart for your Glory in Jesus’ Name!

I’d like to thank my family and friends who have supported and encouraged me not to give up my dream. To Alecia, Adrain, Ashley, and Andrew; thank God for you, my babies. To my Grands and Great-grands, Granny loves you much! To my brothers, men of God: Roosevelt, Waddell, and Stanley, esp. you Mack. You have no idea how much your remarks meant to me. Thank you much!

I’d like to thank my neighbor and friend, Teri Rogerwick, who was there in my time of great need with her knowledge of computers, formatting this book into print for publishing. You’re the greatest lady.

I’d also like to thank Pastor Michael McConnell of First Baptist Church of St. Augustine, FL and my FBC family there. I asked the Lord to direct me to a church where I could worship Him and was directed to First Baptist Church! Thank you Pastor McConnell for the faith you had in me to entrust me with not only working in the church but being an active part of the Body of Christ at FBC. Luv you guys!

To Pastor Derrick Reaves of St. John Baptist Church of Corpus Christi, I have enjoyed your preaching and teachings of the Word of God immensely. And know that my daughter and family are in good hands being shepherded by you. May God continue to richly bless you and your family.

To Pastor Donald Leavell, Senior Pastor of Corpus Christi Christian Fellowship, to whom it has been my pleasure to worship and fellowship with the congregation and the classes with Women Aglow Ministries where I did indeed learn of myself and of the Lord.

To Bishop C. E. Richardson of CalvaryFirst Baptist Church of Corpus Christi, G-Papa, God-father to my grand-dau. I only have a few words to say to the man of God, and that is P* R* E* A* C* H*!

This book is dedicated to Mrs. Frances M. Recee Collier, my bestest friend. She was there with me in the very beginning of the ministry, by my side. She did not get to see the finished work of God, but I shall always remember her words that kept me grounded and focused, It’s not about us, it’s all about JESUS. To my Sista, I say, I will see you in the future, walking in favor, and you’ll look better. GOD be with you until we meet again!

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

As a Pastor and teacher, I see Bible students, young and old struggle to understand the Scriptures. Sister Jackson has provided a valuable resource for the serious student of the Scriptures who can’t afford a library of reference materials or even a good study Bible.

This book fills many of the voids encountered by new Bible study students and it is sure to encourage deeper interest in the meaning of Scripture text. This book will promote a deeper and wiser interpretation of the Word of God. I am honored to endorse this work.

For all who seek a better understanding and greater appreciation of the Awesome God of the Scriptures, I encourage you to take advantage of this valuable, yet affordable book.

This is my birthday and the Spirit of the Lord has descended upon me and I am compelled to write this information from the Scofield (Authorized KJV) Study Bible of 1611. At the time I had no idea why but the Lord revealed it to me later. (I was attending Pilgrims Rest Missionary Baptist Church where I learned that Time is not on our side and the Victory had already been won by our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ!)

Thank you Pastors Roy Malveaux and Alvin Francis. I would like also to thank my Methodist family at St. Paul U.M. Church and Rev. C. D. Owens, where I accepted Christ as my Savior. *I now reside in St. Augustine, FL, the oldest city in the U.S., where the Word of God was brought. Coincidence?, I think not! (Added 03/29/2008)

    I. NAMES OF GOD

Let’s begin with the names of God. Why? Because before God there was nothing. In the Bk. of Genesis you see the awesome power of the Living God. He is the Creator of everything and has always existed. He is the Self-existent One. In the Names of God you find that He is what you need Him to be. As He was with the children of Israel, so is He with us, the Gentiles. Whatever the children of Israel needed, He provided. So it is even to this day. For in His Word, He declares, I am the Lord, I change not… (Mal.3:6a).

He alone is our Provider, our Healer, our Banner, our Peace. God is zealous for His name’s sake. The Lord God declares that His Word will not go out and return to Him void (Is.55:11). It shall indeed accomplish whatever He sent it out to bring to pass. For there is nothing more powerful than the Word of God!

In His names, you also see the Love of God for His chosen people. For Scripture declares that GOD IS LOVE. In the O.T. you can see that love when the Hebrews would repent and seek the Lord God, He always forgave them, time and time again. The same as He does with us today. God is a forgiving, loving, and merciful God. We have only to ask and it shall be given, as long as we don’t ask amiss. There is no god like Jehovah!

His names declare the characteristics of His nature that He reveals to us in our time of need. We have only to ask in Jesus’ name (Mt.7:7).

    a. Let’s look at God our Provider; After 400 yrs. of being slaves in the land of Egypt, the Israelites were set free (Ex.2:23-Ex.13); provided with fire by night and the pillar of cloud by day (13:21-22); crossed over the Red Sea on dry land (14:21-29); fed manna and fowl from the heavens (16:3-15); water from a rock (17:3-6); became mighty warriors when before they were an agricultural people, farmers. They made mistakes and even turned to other gods but when confronted by the prophets with their error and urged to change their ways, they repented and God forgave them their discretions (Gn.22:13-14). God remembered that they are but dust. And because they chose to follow the God of their fathers and believed in the Covenant promises to Abraham, God welcomed them back into the fold. And we know that the Promises of God are Yeah and Amen (2Cor.1:20). Read the first five books in their entirety (Pentateuch/or Torah, commonly known as the Law/Law of Moses).

There is no god like the God we serve! He alone created the heavens and the earth out of a mass of nothingness. He also created man out the dust of the ground then breathed into him the breath of life and man became a living soul (Gn.2:7). IS HE NOT AN AWESOME GOD?!

    b. As Healer, He made preparation for us from the very beginning, before time was called into existence. In the Bk. of Exodus God declares that I am the Lord that healeth thee (15:26). In the Bk. of Isaiah, He declares that "by His stripes we are healed. That He bore our grief and carried our sorrows" on that wooden cross on Calvary! (53:4-5). The sins of the whole world lay on the shoulders of the Son of the Living God. Past, present, and future sins. Why? So we could be reconciled back to God and have an intimate relationship with the Father. That someone is none other than the LORD JESUS CHRIST! The only begotten Son of God (Mt.16:16); the Perfect Sacrifice! (Heb.9:22).

Jesus was with God from the beginning before the worlds were formed. In the Bk. of Genesis, God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…" (1:26). Here is the first revelation of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Ghost). (See Jhn.1:1-18; 14:10-11).

    c. As our Banner, the Lord our God will fight our battles for us. We have only to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord (Ex.14:13). For the battle is not yours (or mine), it’s the Lord’s (v.14). He is the Lord of Hosts, Jehovah Saboath (Heb.). Saboath means simply hosts, but with special reference to warfare or service. It is the name of the Lord in manifestation of His power (1Sm.1:3).

The moment you give your life to Christ and begin to serve God, you will get the attention of our arch enemy. But the Lord tells us to be of good cheer for He has overcome the world (Jhn.16:33b). There awaits for us, the saints of God, a reward that is beyond description if we but fight the good fight of faith. Jesus said the world hated him and they would also hate us (Jhn.15:18). So get ready for the persecutions, trials, and tribulations. But don’t despair, take out your weapons of warfare! We are to put on the whole armor of God in order to fight this battle (Eph.5:10-18). And the Word of God equips us if we but study (2Tim.2:15).

    d. As our Peace, the Scripture declares that He will keep us in ‘perfect peace’ if we keep our mind stayed on Him (Is.26:3). He sends His peace to us through the Comforter, the Holy Spirit (Jhn.14:15-27). We are not to dwell on our situations or circumstances, by what we see. We must seek the Lord God. The enemy wants to distract us and take our concentration off the Lord God.

Almighty, El Shaddai. We must battle our way back and continue to trust in the Lord. The world has a myriad of distractions and things that tend to draw our attention away from God. He’ll use family, friends, children, job, even church members to get us all upset over something very trivial or it could indeed be serious. When we don’t know what to pray, the Spirit of God is interceding
