    Dedication

In memory of those family members who have gone on to be with the Lord. To my great-grandmother, Olivia Stewart; my father, Jenkins Patrick Bowman, my mother, Geraldine Bowman; and my beloved daughter, Nicole Waynette Bowman, whose deep influence is all over these pages and all over my life. Also to my paternal grandparents, Jenkins and Carrie Bowman, aunts Dorothy Bowman and Esther Jackson, cousins Ronald and Marlene Waytes, I love you all dearly. And may God continue to bless and keep you close to his heart.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I    would like to convey my express gratitude to the following people who urged me on by way of their untiring support and seemingly unlimited belief in me: Michelle Chelle, Valerie Bo, Cynthia Cynt, Lynette Nettie, Jereen JED, Anita Nita, Wanda Sanchez, Jean Dora, Tiffany Mussycat – Tinkerbell – Tee-i-double f-any, James Little Jimmy, Ron Mo Better, Jimmy Jay, Lisa Lil Lisa Lyle, Deacon Vera, Miss Erica Dark and Lovely-Bitter Sweet, Sharon, Tiara Ti-Ti, Marcel Headquarters, Perish King Pare, Renee Nay, Joel Joe Joe, Clarice Niecy, Jerell Rell, Tasia Lil Boo, and Jasmine Jaz.

There are special mentors/leaders that I must acknowledge, who have had a significant influence on my life and work. I think if any of us honestly reflect on who we are, how we got here, what we think we might do well, and so forth, we discover a debt to others that spans beyond our imagination. Some of these people I never met, but their preached or published work has inspired me, as well as helped shape my life and work: President-elect Barack Obama, Dr. John C. Maxwell, Rev. Dr. Fredrick K. C. Price, Pastor Scot C. Moore, Drs. Pat and Joann Burjarski, Rev. Dr. John A. Cherry, the late Pastor Archie Dennis, Dr. Miles Monroe, Pastor Charles Phillips, Joyce Meyer, Steve May, Dr. Phillip Church, Elder Thomas P. Beale, the late Rev. Stephen K. Wright, Rev. Dr. Charles Stanley, Dr. Mels Carbonell, Avery T. Willis, Pastor Rick Warren, Susan L. Taylor, and Steveland (Stevie Wonder) Morris.

I would be remiss if I did not express my deepest gratitude to all of my other family members, friends, colleagues, coworkers, and everyone else who had encouraged me, taught me, inspired me, challenged me, or supported me throughout this process and my life. Thanks Ya’ll!

And now, the greatest thanks above all are due to my God for my salvation through my Lord Jesus Christ. May this book be to his glory as I more clearly hear his Spirit speak to my heart.

    INTRODUCTION

There is a lack of effective Christian leadership in our churches, colleges, seminaries, Christian organizations, and society at large. A fresh new look at leadership is necessary due to today’s complex demands of the ministry and the workforce. The standard model for leadership takes its shape from the predominant worldview. High value is placed on independence and self-sufficiency; therefore, leaders are frequently selected based on their accomplishments in the secular world or their demonstrated expertise in an area beneficial to the church. These leaders are usually put into leadership positions without any formal (or informal) training. People believe the local church is in a unique position to make a significant impact on their respective communities for the cause and purpose of Christ. Therefore, this project contributes to the improvement of a system that is geared toward developing effective leaders in the home, community, and ministries within our society.

Changes of significant magnitude are sweeping the communities in which churches minister. The rate of change is at an accelerated pace while at the same time, churches appear to be responding at a snail’s pace. Recent information suggests that most churches in North America have plateaued or declined. If that is true, then the effectiveness of the churches’ influence within the community is also plateauing or declining. God’s chosen instrument for transforming the human heart is the church. If churches are to influence the world for Christ, the saints must be carefully trained to meet the dreaded challenges before them. It is absolutely essential to our society and the mission of the church to produce effective godly leaders. This would facilitate the disciple-making process, as well as improve the effectiveness of the church. Becoming committed leaders for Jesus Christ could promote a positive effect in transforming our homes and communities and influencing our government for the greater good. Otherwise, everyone could suffer because of ineffective leadership.

This book will provide a model for those who hope to influence and impact their communities. It is driven by a strong sense of calling and a passion to help people realize their full leadership potential. Therefore, an assertive effort must be made to not only reflect the Lord’s character and purpose when carrying out our leadership responsibilities but to gain insight, which will help provide a plan of development that will direct leaders to reach and transform their communities to reflect Christlikeness in attitude and behavior.

On July 27, 2004, a young leader delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. While listening to his passionate address, I felt this was one of the most inspirational leadership speeches I’ve ever heard. He made a riveting appeal for unity, not only of the Democratic Party, but a call to unify the country. In his address, he called for Americans to instill in their children a sense of self-worth and inspire hope and care for one another. He said, "It is that fundamental belief – I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper – that makes this country work… even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us… Well, I say to them tonight, there’s not a liberal America and a conservative America – there’s the United States of America. There’s not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there’s the United States of America… We worship an awesome God… We are one people… all of us defending the United States of America. E pluribus unum – out of many, one."

His words echo the third chapter and twenty-eighth verse of Galatians: There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave or free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Even his dissertation on hope mirrored the words of Apostle Paul to the Hebrew church, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Heb. 11:1; emphasis added).

This caring leader was none other than president-elect Barack Obama, soon to be the forty forth president of the United States of America. Why, you may ask, look at an American president as an example of leadership for Christians?

First of all President-elect Obama embodies the mere essence of the seven basic qualities of true Christian leadership outlined in this book – choice, change and
