Night Passage: Poems in Our Two Languages

About this ebook
Dominique Garrel
(French)

ENGLISH POEMS
Airport
We went to the airport
They have these revolving doors
You never know if they are open or closed
You just hope you will end up somewhere on the other side
Many people in uniforms
You feel they are going to ask you something you don’t have
Like a travel permit
Even though you know you did not do anything wrong
And you wait in line for the sun, the beaches, the palm trees,
With all the happy kids
You are glad you did not forget anything
Everything went smoothly
I told her goodbye and I went home
Another Dream
The sea was quiet
Even the arctic terns had stopped chirping
And all the seagulls had gone away
The beach went silent
No more music from the rocks
Lying down on the wet kelps
I could smell the marine odor of life
Air, water, earth,
Together through my body reunited
Endless caresses and passionate embraces
Thousand of lips and many fingers
And these eyes deeper than the sky
Watching me loving them
But no mermaid
Wild West
Deep inside, in the back of my head
I knew that one day they would come
But not that day
I was having a nap, gently lying down in the sun
Doing no harm
I remember I was dreaming about being happy
No more landlords chasing me
No more harassment at work
Just you and me together
Doing nothing but loving each others
Enjoying life with no purpose
Going nowhere but together
And then they roped me
By the ankles
I can’t remember how many horses
At least two for sure
Dragging me around in the dust
My head banging on the ground
And my ass getting on fire from rubbing the earth
And my hands frantically trying to fight the situation
Only to put more blood on the soil
Then they stopped and I turned over like a barbecued steak
Just before they moved on again
And my arms could not protect my face from being ripped of
Until I had no face
Just blood
And my eyes
Still there
Able to see you
Ballroom Dancing
I went to a dance school
I mean, social dancing
Don’t even imagine me on a modern dance show
Or just for laugh
