FROM SORROW TO PROMISE
INTRO
Hannah is a woman of great strength. She shows how we as women can press through pain, intimidation and sadness to reach a point in our lives where God can take the impossible and turn it into the possible all meant for our good.
THE OBSTACLE
The story of Hannah can be found in the first chapter of Samuel. Hannah’s husband, Elkanah would go up to Tabernacle once a year in Shiloh to worship and offer sacrifice to the Lord. When Elkanah offered sacrifices, he would give a single portion to Peninnah, his second wife, and to all her sons and daughters. Hannah’s womb had been shut up, which grieved her; so because of this and the love that Elkanah had for her, he gave her a double portion. Part of Hannah’s sorrow was due to constant ridicule from Peninnah; you see God never sanctioned polygamy for it always brought grief and frustration. Since Peninnah received more because she had so many children and Hannah had none, she mocked her.
Can you imagine people whispering and gossiping around town about Hannah not being able to have children? I’m sure this was very difficult and painful for her to endure. Because of her sorrowful circumstance, Hannah came to the point where she could not stop crying and would not eat.
THE TEST OF FAITH
The mocking of Hannah by Peninnah went on for several years. I can just see Peninnah taunting Hannah every chance she could whenever Elkanah wasn’t around. I’m sure she provoked Hannah by telling her she was cursed by God because of her barren state. Peninnah probably said to her, I’m a better wife to Elkanah because I have given him children; I’m more of a wife than you can ever be.
Hannah was undeniably hurt and distraught, yet God allowed this to happen. Hannah’s faith was being tested for sure. God always provides a test of our faith just to prove what we are made of, and it’s all meant for our good!
The Lord allowed Hannah to go through this for a particular reason, to manifest His purpose in her life.
This was a test for Peninnah as well little did she know that Hannah was about to Arise out of her slump, God had something in store for Hannah!
THE BREAKING OF A NEW DAY
Elkanah asked Hannah, Why are you crying and not eating, why are you so sad? Am I not better to you than ten sons?
(1 Samuel 1:8).
Clearly, Elkanah’s love for Hannah is quite evident. He did not want Hannah to walk around crying and losing weight, he wanted his wife to be happy.
So, for the next sacrifice, Hannah went to Tabernacle to pray to the Lord. She wept bitterly and said, O Lord of hosts if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but give unto your servant a man child. Then I will give him unto you Lord all the days of his life, and there will be no razor come upon his head.
The priest, Eli saw Hannah praying with her lips moving silently, so he thought she was drunk. Eli said to Hannah, How long will you be drunk, put away your wine from you.
Hannah said to Eli, "No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink but have
