    Dedication

This book is dedicated to my darling wife, Bimbo. My jewel of inestimable value and earthly well of pleasures, you took me to church, taught me how to pray, and have stood with me for over twenty-seven years. Thank you so much. I love you.

I dedicate this book as well to our four gifted and brilliant children, God’s reward from heaven, Fayoola, Fin (aka Pinskojay), Foggie, and Ferino. We love you!

Give ear, O ye heavens and I will speak,

And hear O earth, the words of my mouth

My doctrine shall drop as the rain,

My speech shall distill as the dew,

As the small rain upon the tender herb,

And as the showers upon the grass:

Because I will publish the name of the Lord

    Ascribe greatness unto our God

He is the Rock, His work is perfect,

For all his ways are just

A God of faithfulness, without injustice,

    Good and upright is He!

Now also, when I am old—

    And grayheaded, O God

    Forget me not;

Until I have shown thy strength

To this generation, and your power—

To everyone that is to come!

    —Deuteronomy 32:1–4; Psalm 71:18 KJV

    Preface

Setbacks are problems, delays, and challenges that hinder God’s plans and purposes for our lives. They slow us down from arriving at our seasons and fullness of time. Most failures or setbacks are due to the lack of money to accomplish this or that, lack of power, lack of a spouse, lack of children, a failure to get a promotion, or the lack of fellowship. Some failures can be due to a lack of joy, or work, or peace in the family, or lack of some necessary material goods such as a car, phone, or house.

Setbacks, however, are temporary if we look to God for comebacks. I have fallen in love with God the Father recently and long to learn how to express my love for Him. I consider Bob Fitts’s song You Are Worthy as being very close to how I want to express this love.

One of God’s aspects that makes Him unique: no one can question Him or appeal His decisions. No one can ask Him, What have you done? Even King Nebuchadnezzar had a taste of that. God is unquestionable, indubitable, unchangeable, immortal, invisible, invincible, infallible, and omniscient, and nobody can change that.

The story of Hannah tells the story of Christians in this world. It is not a story just for women who are trusting God for the fruit of the womb. We Christians are the spiritual Hannahs, those, like our Father, who call the things that be, not as if they were.

Hannah’s story is that of a Christian’s walk with God. Hannah had no child to show for her many years of marriage and could hardly face her friends. Her seeming failure in life, her setback was caused by her husband’s other wife who became her adversary. This is usually the case when men have two women in their lives.

I have studied the spirit of the second wife (or girlfriend, or other woman) for a long time. Hers is a grabbing, devouring spirit responsible for the deterioration of many men’s health. The other woman often unleashes envy, acrimony, and bitterness. What one wife spends years building is frequently destroyed by another woman, who cares only to satisfy her own desires. This was the situation in Elkanah’s house and possibly in many African homes. Maybe you are in a situation like Hannah’s. If so, you need a comeback. If you have ever lost something or someone valuable, I encourage you to read this story.

I fell in love with Hannah’s story many years ago and came to believe there was more to her story than what pastors normally preach. Most pastors remember Hannah when they minister to those waiting on the Lord for children or when preaching about firstfruits. We occasionally remember Hannah when Samuel is the topic. As I was scripting this book, I discovered that much had been written on Hannah’s prayer, but God showed me a different perspective that He wants you to know as well.

Upon careful study, I found that God had shut Hannah’s womb; her husband had had no hand in it, and neither had Peninnah, her adversary. If the scene had happened in an African setting, people would say, It’s the handwork of the world that brought about her barrenness, but it was no one but God! I sought reasons He would do that until I realized God is beyond questioning.

Someone may be born blind, and someone else may be born lame. God has created the poor and the rich; the black, white, and yellow-skinned; the male and female; and those with blue eyes, green eyes, and black eyes. He is sovereign, the Judge of Judges, the unquestionable One. Nobody can ask Him why He has done this or that. We read in Daniel 4:35, And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and He doeth according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay His hand, or say unto Him, ‘What doest thou?’

Nebuchadnezzar concurred after his seven-year denigration in the forest, None can stay his hand or say unto Him, ‘What doest thou?’ The Bible, 1 Corinthians 13 says we cannot reach His level of understanding; we know only part because we see only part. When we see Him, we shall be like Him and shall know all things as He does.

God created the heavens and the earth for His pleasure. He created the seasons for man and put him on earth to dwell in time. He rules the affairs of men. No man knows tomorrow but God. He knows what all of us will become; He settled that before we were born. It often seems God puts us in disadvantaged positions, but this is true only for those who are too lazy to learn His miraculous solutions or resolutions.

Even when we are discouraged and cannot attain the heights that worldly, unbelieving, and doubtful people do, when it seems nothing is going well or working out, that is the time God expects us to seek His glory. When He arises as the Lord of Hosts, He will show His mercy to His people and scatter His enemies!

Many people have prayed themselves out of calamity. King Hezekiah, one of my favorite kings, prayed himself out of the trouble with the king of Assyria, and King Jehoshaphat prayed and praised himself out of the multitude that faced him. King David prayed himself out of kidnapping trouble at Ziklag. You too can pray yourself out of your troubles. What are you currently confronted with that is like a tsunami or the mother of all troubles? Whatever it is, God is more than able to deliver you from it. He delivered Daniel out of the mouths of lions. He will deliver you in six troubles, yes, in seven there shall no evil touch you (Job 5:19).
