As we celebrate our mothers this month, let’s take a look at a great example of a godly woman who, while initially barren, was eventually blessed with six children by God. However, it is her first child that is the reason for her narrative in the Old Testament.
Without child
Hannah is only mentioned in the Bible in 1 Samuel 1-2. Her significance is most notable in her son Samuel, as a transitional figure as prophet and priest between the age of Judges and Israel’s monarchy. Unfortunately, Hannah was initially childless. We are told that Hannah’s barrenness was no accident: (1 Sam 1:6). This was clearly because God had a special plan for Hannah. However, this didn’t minimise the grief over her barrenness.
