Overcoming Obstacles in My Life - Linda M. Green
Chapter 2
My Military Career Ended
After my military career ended, I attended a Vocational Technical College while in North Carolina. We lived in Fort Bragg, North Carolina for several years and the military relocated us to Fort Polk, Louisiana and the abuse continued. I was so excited to make this move. I was born in Louisiana and I was closer to my mother and father family. Jerry would find things to argue about. For example, the house would be clean; he would pull the sofa from the wall and started fussing about the dirt behind the sofa. We were living in Louisiana. He was still in the military and I was out of the military. I went to school for my Secretarial Degree. I worked very hard each night and day with homework assignments and taking care of our daughter and Jerry cooking, cleaning and preparing for the next day. He loved to shine the cars and go play basketball with the guys. He loved to travel which consist of riding around in different cities for two hours at a time and barely talking about us. He loved to go and check out brand new cars and anything that would attract him and his needs. He loved money a lot and at times it looked like he love money more than me. He loved material things such as shoes, clothes and money. I remember on several occasions, his favorite sayings were, There are three things you don’t mess with concerning him. It is his woman, money, and car. But when you are in abusive situation you think that is love. I remember another incident; we went to Monroe, Louisiana. He wanted to purchased a brand new Mini Van. I told him I like the Mini Van and we agreed to think about it and make a decision later. He took it upon himself to make a decision without me, and came home with the van. Later on we could not afford to pay for the Mini Van or the insurance on the Van. He wanted to control the marriage at that particular time. One night he was fighting me in government housing. I told him that I was leaving and I left walking without any packed clothes. He did not care. He told me to go. So I felt inside that he does not care and did not come to rescue me. I walked straight to the military police station about one half of mile away. I reported him to the military police for hitting me and they contacted his leaders and his leaders contacted Jerry. They asked him, What is going on in that house?
Jerry was very apologetic to his superiors and military police and me. He cried like a baby that night and was very forgiving. He was nice to me for a little while, but it did not last. I thought that would change him and the marriage would take a turn for the better. It did not get better. There came a time when the military send him to Korea on another duty station for one year tour without the family members. This tour was a very hard for me to accept. All the responsibilities were in my hands. But I was free from abuse for a whole year and I thank God for it. I kept myself busy, went to my mother and father home and visit. I completed my Secretarial Degree. Jerry came home during the mid-tour of his assignment from Korea. He would send me and my daughter items from Korea. I really prayed hard for us during this separation time and for Jerry safety while in Korea. The times he was not with us it was very quiet and peaceful and I got closer to God. I would listen to Christian’s radio station. Jerry would tell me how much he loved me and missed us very much and to wait for him and for us to be strong until he comes back home. On one occasion, he sent me some pictures from Korea. On some of those pictures he and some other soldier friends would be taking pictures with Korea ladies with tight garments on. My first thoughts were if I were in Korea or any other country taking pictures with men with tight garments on. What would he think of me
? Jerry told me the soldier over there said, What will your wife think man
Jerry replied My wife is not like that man
. So I thought I am going to believe the best of things, although I did not agree with the situation. I begin to notice something were not quite right. Something is wrong with this picture. Time went by and Jerry completed his tour in Korea. He came back home and we were very happy to have him back. About two months in his returning home, I was playing my Christian Music thinking I had made a different for my home. All of a sudden he turns the Christian music off and said
