ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
FROM AN EARLY age in my life, my grandmother and mother emphasized the importance of being thankful to those who have helped me in my life. By walking their talk, they also taught me how vital it is to give back to people around me and around the world.
I have tried to learn my first lesson well-being thankful. Joachim de Posada, my editor Barbara McNichol, Layla Khoury, Jennifer Norrell, Milly, Isamar Alemán, Adriana Silva, Sofía Márquez, Carlos Márquez, Jose Carmona, Cirilo Cruz, Dr. Larry Lorenz, Nilda Velez and Silvia Arias.
By reading this book, you help me fulfill the second lesson—to give back to people around me and around the world.
Specifically, you’ll learn from this book how to improve your communication skills. At the same time, I hope you’ll better understand the need to act upon mental illness and the well-being of future generations.
INTRODUCTION
WHERE DID I get the idea for writing this book, The Glue Factor?
A long time ago, I saw a television commercial that showed a construction worker putting Krazy Glue® on top of his hard hat. To demonstrate how powerful the glue was, he put on the hard hat and stuck it to a steel beam way above the ground, and then he hung from that beam!
This image of the workman hanging in midair—calmly, even happily, thanks to the strength of the glue—has stuck in my mind ever since I can remember.
It’s precisely the calmness and self-assurance he showed, that I encourage you to have when you speak in public and know you can make the message stick in the minds of your listeners. This book is intended to help you attain that kind of confidence.
No doubt, you have seen how personalities like U.S. President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, success coach Tony Robbins, world-known business speaker Joachim de Posada, religious speaker Joel Osteen, and television host Oprah Winfrey use excellent public speaking techniques to make their messages stick with their audiences. They deliver their ideas in ways that motivate people to take the actions they want, whether it’s to get votes, attract new followers, or secure a sale.
Today, more than ever, professionals need to develop their public speaking abilities to get results for their companies. With severe budgetary cutbacks in every type of business, it’s vital that people in any kind of organization do an effective job of taking the corporate message to actual and potential clients.
In these days of infinite distractions, numerous applications on laptops and cell phones and hundreds of concerns compete for people’s attention. This is why it’s essential that every professional have the tools to help him/her speak assertively, confidently, and persuasively.
The Glue Factor spells out simple techniques that, with practice, can help you make your message stick
as you present the positive impact your organization has on the community and meet your goals.
Is public speaking a gift?
Certainly, some people are born with the gift of being able to speak naturally in public. I remember when I was a young schoolgirl immaculately dressed in my uniform, I’d walk through the hallway toward the principal’s office first thing in the
