The first step to breakthrough is inviting Jesus Christ into your life.

If you have not accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior or need to renew your vow with him, please pray this prayer out loud with me:

God, I have reached a crossroad, and I realize I need you in my heart and a part of my daily life.

God, I’m full of flaws, and I need you to make me over again and give me a new start in life.

Lord, I believe that you are God and God alone. I believe that you love me so much that you sent your son Jesus to die for my sins, that he was buried and resurrected with all power in his hand.

I accept you as my Lord and my Savior, and I give you all of me. I ask that your Holy Spirit come now and dwell within me richly to guide me each day of my life and to empower me to live every day according to your Word and your perfect will for me, in Jesus’s name, amen!

    Dedication

I wrote this devotional during a rough season in my life. I was in a strong battle between my desires and God’s will. God birthed this book out of my pain. This book is comprised of thirty-five daily devotionals, five weeks, seven days a week. Five represents grace, and seven represents perfection and completion. It is my prayer that as you embark upon this journey, your life will be changed and your faith will be made whole. I also pray that you will give birth to destiny! I dedicate this book to your spiritual inheritance!

    Acknowledgment

These words are not my own. All glory belongs to the Lord who used me as his vessel to publish these inspiring messages. I’d like to honor my husband, Robert, for always believing in me and encouraging me to finish the things I begin. I extend a heartfelt and sincere thank you to my sister Alkatrinia C. Payne and brother-in-law Minister Steven O. Payne for their time and diligence in the initial editing of this book. With keen spiritual ears and sharp natural eyes, they ensured that the content was biblically sound and easy to understand. Thanks for your patience and commitment; I will be forever grateful to you both.

To my parents, Pastor Daniel and Minister Margaret Gainey, for instilling godly values in me and being a living example of holiness. To Pastor Carolyn Little for helping push my spirit into purpose and for collaborating with me on the prayers for weeks one and two contained herein. You’re one of God’s best-kept secrets—but not for long! To my long time friend and confidant, Christine Rice for being by my side through it all – you’re a jewel to me and my entire family. We love you dearly.

The Ninety-First Psalms is one of the most popular scriptures in the entire Bible because it speaks of rescue—rescue from grief, loneliness, distress, life’s trials, and adversity. It starts out with the person that dwells in the secret place, abiding under the shadow of the Almighty. Therefore, it becomes obvious to me that you cannot abide until you find that secret place. Dwelling means to abide, remain, to reside, or to exist. When the Holy Spirit led me to go for a walk, I never knew that he was about to open up this verse to me. The Lord began to speak about the secret place, that everyone has a secret place, and it’s about finding that place in God for you. You may not find it the way I found it, and I may not find this place the way you found it, but one thing is for sure, if you plan on being secure and stable in God, you must find this place for yourself.

Most often, the journey to the secret place will begin in your valley. While we are almost always in a hurry to leave the valleys of our lives, I need to remind you that whenever it rains, the water always runs down into the valley. From the mountain high to the valley low does the rain go. It is in the valley where things die and germinate. The oil ran down the beard of Aaron; in essence, the anointing in your life is being developed in the valley. Therefore, as we journey to the secret place, we will find ourselves in the valley of life. Please be warned that the enemy will never want you to find your secret place, because Satan knows once you find this place, he loses his grip on you. I call this a journey because it is a press to get there, pressing out of the familiar to the unfamiliar, getting to know the God you serve in ways that only he can show you, and the more you press, the more you feel the inner man in you change. This secret place, when you get there, will be the place where you can really let go of yourself and just be you, for God knows all about you anyway. It is the place where God tells you about you. It is the place where the Father validates his child and affirms his child. How else can we abide in his presence except we be his?

It is in this place that you begin to long more for him, because once you really taste him, you will long to taste him again and again. In your high place, you will long for him, and in your low place, you will thirst for him. That is why David said, concerning the Ark of the Covenant (paraphrased), I know I can’t touch the ark, but if I can just stand in its shadow, I will feel his presence.

The scripture says, He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Therefore, because you made a choice to search for this place, you really made a choice to search for him, and in that pursuit, you found something that you really were not searching for; you found out who he is. You found out that God really is a shelter, a hiding place, and now you know beyond any shadow of doubt why you trust in him. You see this place is a place of knowing that God is everything that you heard about, read about, and so much more. You see the Ninety-First Psalms is really about us seeking and getting to know our God and our Father’s response because we did.

Therefore, to all the sons and daughters of the kingdom, as you take this journey these next thirty-five days, I pray that you will find that secret place, for it is the place of breakthrough and divine purpose. Be blessed of the Lord.

    Week One / Day One

There’s a lifting in the storm

My afflictions were good for me because they taught me thy law.

    (Ps. 119:71, paraphrased)

Sometimes the very things we attribute to the enemy is really God’s hands at work, allowing situations to take place in our lives to call us back into the place God ordained for us.

The first acknowledgment we must come to is realizing God’s purpose in the place we are presently in. Too often in our lives, we give the enemy more credit than he deserves. In reality, all power for everything on earth and in earth comes from God.

A while ago, the Lord gave me a revelation about storms. I was sitting and pondering the thought of how shortly after the worst storms, little buds, flowers, and trees begin to appear from seemingly out of nowhere. Then the Lord told me, There’s a lifting in the storm. Sometimes storms come to release the seed that’s been trapped under fallow ground for days, weeks, months, or maybe even years.

As a native South Floridian, I’ve seen my share of hurricanes. I vividly remember us running to the grocery store to buy water, canned goods, batteries, and more because only God knew how long the power would be out. We would use plywood to board up our windows and secure everything around the house. When the storm came, we all went inside to a safe place until the storm passed over. Regardless of the number of storms, fallen power lines, power outages, or uprooted trees there were, our house stood firm.

The Lord began to reveal to me that sometimes he ordains the storm. It comes to get us into a safe place, a quiet place. God allows the storms in our lives to strengthen our foundation so we can stand. In actuality, the storm ushers us into a new level of pressing that allows the anointing to be released at a greater level.

Storms come to uproot (1) things in our lives that we didn’t know were there, (2) things we thought we had already gotten over, or
